Anyone doing it?

Either London or Edinburgh?

Anyone interested in a fitness / support thread?

I'm doing it for the 3rd time in May (missed last year, as it was the night DS was born!) and really looking forward to it, but feeling a bit more apprehensive, as I'm not as fit as I used to be!

OP posts:

Yes, intending to do 13 miles on Saturday too, gulp!

Is the weather forecast bad then?

mrspnut · 03/03/2009 20:48

I need to get going now with my training. I shall start with a nice easy 5 miler this sunday to ease myself back into it.

I did walk about 2 miles last night on the treadmill at the gym but most of that was uphill so not really a good comparison.

Hope you all have good strong legs ladies and get in some good walks over the week.

spongebrainbigpants · 03/03/2009 20:52

Just saw this on Active Convos and wanted to post and wish all you lovely ladies lots of luck!

I did the Moonwalk in 2004 and it was the best thing I ever did - amazing experience. Didn't get in this year so very envious .

Have fun, train hard and enjoy every minute!

morethanyoubargainfor · 03/03/2009 21:20

training not going so well this week am planning a long-ish walk on Thursday, if i can muster up the energy! [af due, hence why not much happening here!]

Afte thursday should have good training happening. fingers crossed for me everyone, and good luck to everyone else this week, we shall make it in the end.

funnypeculiar · 03/03/2009 22:33

Yuck to bad weather
We're having a relatively easy week - couple of short walks then 10 miles Sat am (can't believe how much my mind has altered - since when was nearly 20 miles in a week 'easy' )

Is anyone else having trouble juggling diaries to fit the long walks in??

Oh, & thanks spoungebrainbigpants - nice to hear that all this is going to eb worth it.

Bigtillymint - did you see the doctor yet? How did things go?

kiwibella · 03/03/2009 22:42

mtybf has got me thinking... anyone know if there are lots of toilets along the way?

mrspnut · 04/03/2009 07:17

There are designated sets of portaloos and water stations and they are all marked on the map you get a few weeks before the day.

wiffey · 04/03/2009 07:32

Juggling the walks and kids and work is a little tricky at times to say the least.

I know what you mean about mindset funny, I never thought I would start to look forward to a 13 mile walk

Going to do 8 this morning as haven't really done much this week apart from my tap class.

bigTillyMint · 04/03/2009 11:18

Oh yes, FP! I did see the doctor yesterday - he was very nice, and checked me. I thought it might be something to do with my monthly cycle and he agreed, but I am being referred for a mamogram anyway (yuck!) I'm glad I went, even if it is nothing

Yes, we have blocked out all Saturday mornings adn Thursday evenings till the night for walking - DH's doing all the childcare

wiffey · 04/03/2009 20:15

Well the weather bit was obviously a lie, I had a beatiful sunshine walk today.

Legs felt a bit heavy towards the end of 9 so I think I need to do more stretching. I'm getting a little concerned that I might not have the stamina to walk for 7-8 hours ?? Are you all doing other exercise & lots of stretches ??

morethanyoubargainfor · 05/03/2009 07:18

I am sure ou will be fine. I also cycle when ever i can, i also workout to coleens disco DVD 3 times a week, and swim up to twice a week. ( i also play on my wii everyday, although not sure you can call that excercise!

OMG that makes me sound super fit, but i asure you i am not, although o probably havr a weight disadvantage over most, although i have lost quite alot since increasing walking.

bigTillyMint · 05/03/2009 09:04

Wow MTYBF - you ARE super fit

Wiffey, I have been trying to remember to stretch, which does seem to help. Are you trying to follow the Moonwalk plan for training? I am also worried about having the stamina to last the whole walk, but we are building up the length of our walks, so hopefully.....

morethanyoubargainfor · 05/03/2009 09:31

why thank you BTM, but believe i could be alot fitter! hopefully one day!

funnypeculiar · 05/03/2009 09:37

wow, mtybf, I'm impressed too

Great news on the docs, bigTillymint, hope the mamogram goes ok - do you know when it'll be?

I'm not really doing anything other than the walks (we did 6/7 miles last night) - but we did try doing some intervals (walking as fast as we could for slots of 2 mins) which felt good - when you slow down to 'normal' walking sped again it just feels lovely

bigTillyMint · 05/03/2009 10:57

Nope - not an urgent referral

I have tried walking at 5miles an hour on the treadmill - can keep it up for half an hour, then I have to slow down a bit. It is MEGA fast

kiwibella · 05/03/2009 16:00

good on you ladies... loving your variety mtybf - after asking you about that disco dvd, I forgot about your recommendation. I'm tempted to give it a try.

Glad that everything was clear for you bigTillymint, hope that you get a speedy date for mammogram and that is painless .

I've been hopeless this week... partly putting it down to af... partly putting it down to stresses with a friendship... even my baby has noticed that we have had more car journeys than normal and is grumpy about being put in her carseat instead of going for a long walk and push. I haven't even remembered to do my stretches... but thanks for the reminder - I'll be back on Davina in the morning .

I think the training plan is very helpful... although I'm nowhere near what it suggests. I'm working on the 35% physical theory... and going for the 65% mental... knowing that I am going to be looking sympathy for a week afterwards.

wiffey · 05/03/2009 16:47

I'm going on the 65% as well I think I might try & do a pilates dvd as well to strengthen up. I've been dieting as well over the last few months so have lost a couple of stone which makes it seem a little easier at times, now putting weight on though but I'm hoping it's muscle otherwise not happy

Did 9 yesterday & 5 today both on good times, it's the 12 on Saturday I'm not looking forward to !! We were going to try the interval training in the week.

We have set up our team fundraising page on one of the recommended websites which is quite exciting, be good when we start to see some money coming in as well.

marg1066 · 05/03/2009 17:25

Hi ladies, that's me back from Vegas jet lagged, tired, probably half stone heavier and two very swollen legs, had to wear sandals on way home, it was freezing when we had to change at New york as they had snow, then got home to snow! Had a good time, but wouldn't go back, grand canion was fabulous. You all sound like you have been busy, I've still not received my pack, bit disappointed.

wiffey · 05/03/2009 19:17

Glad you had a good time marg :0)

Might be worth chasing on the pack front though the main thing in it is the training schedule !!!

marg1066 · 05/03/2009 21:38

I know wiffey, I was getting a bit worried so I sent an email, that will be the 2nd so hopefully I`ll here something soon. We must have walked miles in vegas so that will give me a start

marg1066 · 07/03/2009 12:11

Hi, I received my training pack today, does anyone know when we get bra and t-shirts? Thanks

bigTillyMint · 07/03/2009 12:56

Hi Marg! I was wondering that too! And when do we get the route map?

Just done 14 miles - not as fast as FP though - it took just over 3 and a half hours. My legs feel very tired and heavy - must presuade DH to give them a good massage

wiffey · 07/03/2009 14:22

Well done BTM, had good intentions this morning but then looked at the state of my house & an NVQ assesment not yet finished so have put off untill tomorrow !!!

I don't think the route is decided untill nearer the time so not sure how much notice of it we get ??

Anyway, back to cleaning the bathrooms

arfur · 07/03/2009 17:08

Hi- havent been posting as havent been training really till this week as hurt my knee skiing. Had complete crisis on Mon and told my walking partner I couldnt do it but she talked me round and I did 7 miles on weds and we are getting together tomorrow for first time to do 10 miles. Might get knee checked out by Dr just to make sure its ok but I suspect the walking is helping it. Me and my bf are in west berks so were wondering if it would be worth us booking a cheap hotel so that we could come up early and then have a rest in the afternoon to conserve energy. Does anyone know roughly when we need to be there on the night? Also if anyone knows of a cheapish hotel near to the start that would be v useful. You are all doing so well with your training I feel slightly shameful but am really going to try and get on track as I know I will be so chuffed if I do achieve it!

bigTillyMint · 07/03/2009 18:02

Wiffey, are you training on your own? If so how do you motivate yourself? If it wasn't for my friends, I don't think I would even contemplate it

Arfur, do you think you would be able to sleep in the afternoon? I'm sure I am going to be so nervous....!
