Anyone doing it?

Either London or Edinburgh?

Anyone interested in a fitness / support thread?

I'm doing it for the 3rd time in May (missed last year, as it was the night DS was born!) and really looking forward to it, but feeling a bit more apprehensive, as I'm not as fit as I used to be!

OP posts:

my Dh is taking our DS to hotel, so they can sleep and then come to finish line at estimated time to hopefully see me finish.

i have just used runfinder and realised that most of my walks are longer than i thought and the one i did this mornig is half a mile shprter than i thought!

mrspnut · 25/02/2009 21:44

There are usually 4 start times - depending on what time you put for completing in determines what time start you go in.

The first start goes at 11pm and that are the fast finishers, the next is at 11:20, then 11:40 then midnight for the majority of the walkers.

There are roads to cross and because the traffic isn't stopped there can be delays when crossing roads not long after the start.

I could barely walk after the first time I did the full moon and I certainly didn't feel like breakfast but then I am quite hefty and I didn't put in as much training as I would have liked so it may be different for you.

mrspnut · 25/02/2009 21:46

this is good you do have to drag it across to england to be able to use it but it is fairly accurate.

It doesn't show footpaths or bridleways really so you have to know where you're going.

kiwibella · 25/02/2009 21:56

those links are all helpful, thanks! Mrspnut... I'm discovering lots about my new local area by exploring the bridleways. I never know where I am going or where I will end up.

Booking a hotel is the most fabulish idea I have heard!! Somewhere with a spa . Definately champagne at the finishing line too . I know that hubs will use the kids as a reason not to be out supporting me in the middle of the night.

mrspnut · 25/02/2009 22:00

We stayed at the Holiday inn at mayfair which was gorgeous and let us have our room until 1pm on the sunday too so I could have some sleep after the race.

It isn't far from Hyde park either but it is pricey. My OH went out on the lash whilst I was walking but he did get up to come and see me cross the finish line ( or he would have done if he'd been at the right side of the tent)

wiffey · 25/02/2009 22:02

I'm loving all I see when I'm out, noticed some very fine raised vegetable beds today which set me thinking

Have also thought I will probably keep walking once the official training is over.

Quite excited at the thought of the night & am totally prepared to cry at the end as most people I've spoken to did !!

funnypeculiar · 25/02/2009 22:09

Oh, that's useful mrspnut, thanks!

We're reasonably local (25 mins on train to waterloo) so a hotel feels a bit unnecessarily indulgent ... sounds like a lovely idea though!

Wifey, I have raised veg beds (not pretty ones though!) on the patio - they are FAB!

wiffey · 25/02/2009 22:14

Cool funny, I'm so tempted to start growing my own veg and have an area at the front that would be perfect.

I fancy the hotel idea but there's a few of us doing it & I have to be at work on the Monday morning not sure how that's going to go !! As long as dh is on the line waiting I don't mind if I then just crawl into a car and get transported home for a great big sunday lunch .....

kiwibella · 26/02/2009 13:08

true... I'm putting the kai-bosh on a hotel realising that I won't be there to use it!!!

Hubs is planning a vege garden he is so painful in the planning process. I also know who will end up tending his produce . I'm sure me and the little girl will love it .

morethanyoubargainfor · 27/02/2009 11:13

just leaving to do 15 miles, hopefully see you when i return, its bound to be sometime over weekend!

wiffey · 27/02/2009 13:50

I've just been out & mapped a nice 10 mile for tomorrow, need to be back in time for the rugby though

Countingthegreyhairs · 27/02/2009 14:03

Just catching up with this thread and have managed to get out three times this week (only for 40 mins each time but better than nothing). Have tried the £50 note technique but dh says I have developed a pained expression when I clench!!

I'm in awe of the distances you guys are achieving!! Well done everyone!

bigTillyMint · 27/02/2009 15:23

Wow! 15 miles!

Planning to do 11 - 12 tomorrow.

I am not doing very well on the £50 trick - it feels strange and then I keep forgetting

morethanyoubargainfor · 27/02/2009 16:56

hello, i'm back! ndits still daylight. in the end though think we did around 17.5 miles, but still not bad.

Even the dogs enjoyed it, but will probhably sleep for rest of weekend now, ucky things!

bigTillyMint · 27/02/2009 20:33

17.5 OMG! How long did it take you?

morethanyoubargainfor · 28/02/2009 08:29

it took us just shy of 5 hours. we think next time we do a big walk we will leave dogs behind to see how much quicker we can do it without them.

wiffey · 28/02/2009 10:45

If it'a anything like my old retriever about 2 hours !!!!

Just off to do 10, see you all later (in between rugby matches & cider)

bigTillyMint · 28/02/2009 12:39

Well done MTYBF! Do you walk on roads or through fields?

Wiffey (and everyone else!), do you do a different route each time you go out, or just add more onto each walk? We are adding more onto each walk, which is quite good as you get used to seeing the same landmarks, so you can see what you're aiming for next.

Does anyone know when the Moonwalk route gets sent out?

morethanyoubargainfor · 28/02/2009 12:44

thanks BTM, every day i walk through fields, and yesterday we prob did around 5 miles in fields and the rest on the road. i have to say i think we may have been spoilt walking through fields, as it is so much easier than road walking! We have a walk planned for tuesday that is 11.5 miles but all on the road! hopefully all will go ok.

bigTillyMint · 28/02/2009 14:39

Yes, it must be nice away from all the traffic - not so easy in London! Is it more bouncy on the fields - no mud / long grass to get in the way?

wiffey · 28/02/2009 15:32

I try to vary my rouyes BTM or Iget a bit bored, didn't bring in a very good tome day - 3hrs for 10.5 mile but had a real energy low at about 8 miles & the last 2 were alot slower.

As I drive the routes first I have a rough idea of a few mile marks.

Off to watch some rugby now, Scotland might even win for once

morethanyoubargainfor · 28/02/2009 18:41

yes BTM it is alot eaier on all your joints walking on grass and i n fields, even when your feet are being slpayed out at a 90 degree angle because of the slippery mud! or when you are ankle high in thick mud(trust me i know)

Walking on roads is tougher in the sense that you can feel every step you take! it impacts on every joint in your body. you don't think about the impact until you have spent so long walking on one or the other for a long time, then swap them over.

funnypeculiar · 01/03/2009 00:09

wow, well done morethanyoubargainedfor - I'm also jealous of all your off road stuff! And great work on getting out three times countingthegreyhairs.

We did just short of 14 miles on Friday night (slightly by accident, we were planning on 12 miles & remembered our route wrong!!) We really went for it in the last half hour or so, and it took us 3hrs 15, so reasonably pleased with that. Slightly sore calves this morning though...my first genuine walking injury

kiwibella · 01/03/2009 19:44

well done lovely ladies!! Those distances are a huge achievement... you are both well on the way to comfortably completing the course.

wiffey · 03/03/2009 18:38

How's it going this week ladies ? I think the weather is going to be against us in the south for a few days

Looking for a nice 13 mile one for Saturday, walking 1/2 of it will feel like a huge acheivment.
