I can't find the old one in Health, and we deserve to be in brand new shiny Sport and exercise anyway

I have just cheered myslef up from a down day by doing a training plan starting the 1st Jan to 26th April for a half marathon. and I determined to do it.

sparklyxmasfairy · 14/12/2008 21:36

hi all have been all shivery high temp sniff sniff all weekend so no running for me, actually barely out of the sofa

about treadmill I used to do it before dd along with the weight at the gym as a session of a bout 90mins sometimes spinning too but have to say I much rather be outdoors it is just so dull in a gym but like someone said would not mind having one at one for occasional use sadly space is very scarce

OrmIrian · 15/12/2008 16:03

Blardy hell! Anyone else have trouble running yesterday with the frost? It was a choice between taking your chances running in the road, or falling arse over tit on the pavement! Did 8 miles though . It was so lovely. No problems with stamina thing but my foot is quite sore where it was broken

OrmIrian · 15/12/2008 16:04

Sorry about you being ill sparkly. Miserable isn't it . I got sick this time last year and could hardly get out of bed.

SmilesLikeNoOther · 15/12/2008 20:58

Yeah, bah. Have completely buggered my right leg up.....one legged skiing on frosty leaves. Got a sciatic like pain in my hip. grump.
I was too tired to run really but needed the headspace.
So hiking or cycling this week until friday.
Healing vibes to sparkly.

sparklyxmasfairy · 17/12/2008 21:06

what? no one running? I need my vicarious distances and times
still bit rubbish health wise an so is dd can't wait for the weekend

TinyWhiteFeather · 18/12/2008 00:55

Still trying to be good and rest my leg but can feel the need building up....god I feel frustrated. Might hold out until friday and then get a good evening run in.
Leg has definately improved for giving it a rest though.

BlessThisMess · 18/12/2008 17:29

I haven't been here for a while. First week of December we had a week's holiday in Helmsley (home-educators group) where we were blessed with a white 'Christmas' (we celebrated early!). I went for an utterly beautiful run in the snow and it was fab.

Since then I've caught DD2's horrible cough and cold and my lungs simply won't cope with running ATM. Despite that, I have signed up for my first 10k which will be on 22nd Feb and have printed off a training plan starting next Monday for 9 weeks. Am both looking forward to and dreading getting going again!!

OrmIrian · 19/12/2008 10:54

Yes I'm running. 3 times this week. Feeling fit and raring to go but my foot and calves are a bit sore. 7 miles on Sunday, 4.5 miles Tuesday and Friday evenings. Not idea of the time though.

OrmIrian · 19/12/2008 10:55

Sorry Tuesday and Thursday

HarktheHarrogateMumissinging · 19/12/2008 11:32

I've been rubbish. Not been for 10 days and then it was only a 3 miler. Cant get the motivation and am considering waiting until 1st Jan and starting the new year afresh! Although got a 10k on 1st Feb so that only gives me one month to get sorted....

sparklyxmasfairy · 19/12/2008 13:47

good to know some of you are still going out, am booked for tomorrow, throat still a bit sore but it is not that cold here so will risk it. haven indoors all week with poorly child so nearly climbing walls

off to The North Tuesday taking gear with me and hope to find a suitable place for a couple of miles on a couple of days while I am up there

SSSantaClausIzzzComing · 19/12/2008 13:52

can I just ask you running experts, what do you wear to go out running in this weather?

I am contemplating it (not intensively but thinking about it for dd and me) but I hate the cold and I don't venture out without a warm coat, hats, thick gloves, winter boots etc. Can't imagine running off in just a thin little jacket and leggings like I see other runners wear.

Do you cover your heads? Sorry I sound a bit dense, really have no idea

sparklyxmasfairy · 19/12/2008 13:56

whilst no expert I can only say layers, if cold only wear one layer bottoms a base layer either short or long sleeve, then another and if really cold a jacket/ wind rain stopper iyswim wear hat but usually take it off mid run and lightweight gloves
you warm up really fast

SSSantaClausIzzzComing · 19/12/2008 13:59

I see thanks. So I'll need some kind of little rucksack or something to put in the gloves and hats and maybe jackets we peel off as we go.

Tbh I doubt we would get very far, run very fast so we might not get all that fantastically warm. I suppose we have to just try it, eh? So difficult to feel motivated with these long cold dark (wet) days!

sparklyxmasfairy · 19/12/2008 14:02

pockets are enough I quite like the cold, fewer people about

OrmIrian · 19/12/2008 14:22

My normal clothing is running tights - just below the knee and a t-shirt. In the winter I add a fleece and/or waterproof breathable jacket. If it's really cold I also take gloves and a hat. If it's really really really cold I wear some long jogging bottoms of DH's that make me look huge. Hoping for some long running trousers from good old FC.

SSSantaClausIzzzComing · 19/12/2008 14:26

Just just seen you ran 7 miles on Sunday !

Can't beleive I would ever manage that...

Ok so I will look at some kind of running trousers, thin jacket type thing and we can wear a normal fleece, hat, gloves. Thanks!

CurrantBun · 19/12/2008 14:40

Yes, still running here too, although have finally caught DH and DS's cold - have been surrounded by germs for the past week so have done pretty well to remain lurgy-free for this long. I don't feel too bad so it won't stop me running.

The week after my 10K I had a serious attack of the CBAs (not helped by the Baltic weather conditions) but have managed to get myself out the door twice this week for a couple of 5-milers. Planning 3 miles tonight and 10 on Sunday. December is always a low-mileage month for me as a) I am too tired trying to fit in all the Christmas shopping and other preparations and b) I generally don't run the week between Christmas and New Year as it's just too busy visiting family and friends.

I think I'll look for a late January/February half marathon to give me something to aim for in the new year.

In the cold weather, I run in long running tights (which have seen better days and usually end up between my crotch and my knees), a long-sleeved running top, a light fleece, gloves and a hat. Usually find I get too hot but rather that than freeze my bits off!

TinyWhiteFeather · 19/12/2008 15:13

I am probably going to try a run tonight, leg isn't brilliant but if I take it steady I think it would do me good.
I have a great thinsulate hat that lets my head breathe and makes me look like compo, so I don't worry too much about running on my own at night. Then a hoody and tracky bottoms.
And a pocket somewhere to stick my phone/music...

MissChief · 19/12/2008 19:43

not been out for 3 days, full of cold and full of the choc i've been eating while lying on the sofa instead of running1

sparklyxmasfairy · 20/12/2008 14:43

well I did manage 3 miles today, just about but needed tissues and to take it easy

can't believe I managed a week at home indoors with a poorly child and raging PMT, well done me

off again tomorrow

fishie · 20/12/2008 14:52

i am also still going 3-4 times a week, much prefer it at this time of year to heat. rubbish yesterday (residual hangover only managed 25mins) and forgot to wash kit so not today. will try for 10k tomorrow, weather forecast is good.

MrsWednesday · 21/12/2008 08:24

I've been rubbish, haven't been out for three weeks . I've popped in here for some inspiration, because if I don't go today I will probably stop all together over the festive period.

I shall steel myself, go and eat some porridge and get out there this morning.

BlessThisMess · 21/12/2008 16:18

Well done Mrs W. I also considered going out today (first time in about 3 weeks too, due to cough/cold) but went back to bed with a rotten headache instead. I hope you did better than me!
