I can't find the old one in Health, and we deserve to be in brand new shiny Sport and exercise anyway

Ooh thanks kitty. Will have a look at those.

Got new runners today! Same as the old ones...just not three years old

robino · 18/03/2009 09:48

Right, I'm back! Signed up just after Christmas then we all had bouts of several illnesses and bugs and only just seem to be getting back on track. Have managed to get out once or twice a week and was delighted last week when I went out with running group to discover that when we did a 25 min out and 25 min back job that I managed 4.5 miles in 52 mins - was only doing just over 3 in Jan. Paid for it the next day though!

I have a question about cross training. I'm currently getting out for run twice a week but have just found someone to run with one evening a week so am hoping to up that to 3 times a week. Have just discovered our local leisure centre has a creche so am hoping to get the DDs booked in one morning a week and make use of the gym. It has running machine, reclining bikes, rower and cross trainers and weights which, if I'm honest, I'm a bit scared to investigate just now (but I will ask the gym man to show me them in a month or so..). What would you do (or what should I do) in terms of cross training?

Hope everybody is enjoying their running.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 18/03/2009 20:15

robino - I was forced to cross train because of a dodgy knee and now my knee is much better I've decided to stick with it.

I row (about 20 minutes on the top level), walk fast on the treadmill on a steep incline again usually for 20 minutes and do the cross trainer - on an interval programme. I also do some free and assisted weights. Just mix it up a bit to stop the boredom.

peachsmuggler - hope the shoes do the trick.

mileniwmffalcon · 19/03/2009 16:52

hello everyone just wondered if i could nip in and ask for a bit of training advice.

i'm loving the c25k and i've just graduated from the walking bits, i can manage 25mins/4km okay now [proudgrin]. thing is, the c25k has you running 3 times a week, and i'd really like to run every other day, rather than leaving a 2-day gap at the end of the week. so i'd be doing 3 runs one week and 4 the next. the times increase pretty gradually from here on, (wk7 25 mins, wk8 28mins, wk9 30mins iirc) so i'd just run an extra repeat of that week's run, not increase time any more than that.

does this sound reasonable or is it increasing total weekly mileage too quickly? i'm just really loving it and 2 days feels like a long time to go without, but i realise that's the endorphins talking! i've got this far without any real problems (except tweaky knees fixed by a more thorough warmup) and i'd hate to fall into the obvious trap of doing too much too soon and getting hurt.

any advice much appreciated

sfxmum · 19/03/2009 17:11

what is c25k? pardon my ignorance
I am not an expert but I would guess that you can't go wrong if take it easy, I had some problems when I went to far too soon

about cross training I am lazy but do some weights for upper body, core stability work and do squats and lunges I think it helps

hope everyone is ok am plodding along ok
hopefully by the end of the summer I will be on regular 10k runs

mileniwmffalcon · 19/03/2009 18:02

sorry! couch to 5k plan.

kittywise · 19/03/2009 18:38

Hi mileniwmffalcon, I would think that that would be fine, listen to you body, if you are feeling fine then carry on, if not then hold back a bit.
Well done on keeping up with the plan

sfxmum · 19/03/2009 19:31

oh of course you are doing great buy the sounds of it I started with jog one minute walk 3 and took it from there then suddenly 5k is a nice morning run

sfxmum · 19/03/2009 19:32

by countless silly misspellings it is a if I were drinking

nappyaddict · 19/03/2009 21:23

Hi everyone!! Well I haven't been out for nearly 2 months I don't know if any of you know but DS was very poorly and spent most of February in hospital and I just hate leaving him at the moment.

Did anyone go out in all that snow and ice that we had??

I am glad the weather's getting a bit nicer as it only has to be windy or raining and I won't go out I'll go out in drizzle but that's it.

mileniwmffalcon · 19/03/2009 22:38

hi kitty i think i'll give it a go and just keep a good eye on any niggles.

nappyaddict · 21/03/2009 18:28

Does anyone wear sports insoles when they run? Do they make a difference? And which are the best sort? I have seen some with gel cushioning and some with EVA cushioning.

OrmIrian · 23/03/2009 08:36

9.28 miles! No, really. I am so chuffed, not to mention a bit achey And it was about 85 mins so quicker than normal. I blame my new shoes... they are fantastic. Next best thing to not wearing any.

kittywise · 23/03/2009 12:51

Excellent OrmIrian what shoes are they?

OrmIrian · 23/03/2009 12:57

Adidas Adizero LT kitty. I can't beleive the difference TBH. I had running shoes before but they just looked like ordinary trainers. These aren't. They are mens shoes as I am a size 7.5/8 and I find that some women's sport shoes are too small.

fishie · 24/03/2009 08:29

orm that is brilliant, i am very impressed and jealous.

hello nappyaddict, hope you will be back running now it is spring. i have not tried insoles.

leg still quite painful, have got new shoes will see whether it helps. also i twanged my knee going up a steep bank so am generally a bit crocked.

now, old runners, how do you feel when getting out of bed in morning? i haven't been out since sunday and only 6k then but this morning was very stiff and achy.

rantothehills · 24/03/2009 10:37

hi, might try those insoles too then, thanks for recommendation. Running steadily atm, about 5 miles or so a few times a week.
One (probably silly) question, what do you all do when it's sunny? Run with sunglasses (imagine they're a pain) and put sunblock on (i get quite sweaty) or not bother? Already seem to be freckling up from the sun and am vainly worried about wrinkles!

fishie · 24/03/2009 13:24

i put sunblock on face / chest. no sunglasses. is amazing how much sun exposure you get, i have got a tan line from capri things on my leg and am whitest person ever.

sfxmum · 24/03/2009 14:10

hello all

no insoles here but I always slap moisturiser with spf and proper sunblock in summer, yes to sunglasses but I use glasses anyway so no big adjustment

hope everyone is running along ok and injury free

nappyaddict · 24/03/2009 15:35

RTTH which insoles are you going to get?

MrsWednesday · 24/03/2009 22:12

I must make more of an effort to use sunscreen this year, given the state of my wrinkles these days...

Just on the insoles question, when I saw a physio a couple of weeks ago she said it might be best to get them fitted by a proper podiatrist as they can do more harm than good. Although she might just have been saying that because I'm extremely flat-footed and need specialist help.

Went out with the running club tonight and so far (touch wood) my various injuries aren't hurting. Have taken things very steady recently - may just have to accept my limits and not push myself too hard as my old legs aren't up to it.

Kitty, forgot to say thanks for those stretches, will definitely give them a go.

Orm, your new trainers sound brilliant. Are they ones with added support? I supposedly over-pronate (as well as flat feet, wrinkles, sore legs etc - I am falling to bits!) so need loads of support.

Fishie, I'm 37 and generally finding recovery from hard runs takes ages, but on a day-to-day basis I'm not too bad.

Nappyaddict, how is your DS now? It sounds like it has been horrible for you.

Peachsmuggler, how are the new trainers?

OrmIrian · 25/03/2009 11:46

I don't know MrsW. I think I'm an overpronator (?) too. I bought them because they were really confortable when I tried them on and they were reduced to 25 in the Adidas factory shop . I don't know the nearest proper running shop to here.

You aren't the only one who's falling apart btw. I spent most of Sunday after my run treating all my joints very gingerly indeed Poor old lady that I am ....

kittywise · 25/03/2009 16:11

orm, I'm going to get those shoes. I spent a pretty penny on a pair just about a month ago, mizuno I think. Went to a proper running shop, tried on lots of pairs. They seemed ok to start off with, but I just can't get comfy in them .
I am always aware of them when I'm running, in order to hold my heal in properly the laces then cut across the top of my foot. They feel clunky really, heavy.
I've tried lacing them different ways. I've just come back from a short run and my knees hurt.
Right ebay it is!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 25/03/2009 20:37

I need to get back to it. Like nappies have had hospitalised child - hope ds is improving nappies, I read your thread a while back, you've had a tough time of it.

I wear gel half insoles, just off the shelf ones. They just protect my achilles a bit as it's prone to flaring up and seem to help my legs not ache so much. I'm 46 [ancient].

I wear sunscreen and sometimes a baseball cap as I screw up my eyes and get those 'deep set' wrinkles like on the L'Oreal advert

OrmIrian · 26/03/2009 13:03

Sorry to hear about your DC saggar. Is all well now?
