I can't find the old one in Health, and we deserve to be in brand new shiny Sport and exercise anyway

New shoes are going well mrswed. Been in them for a week and a half and going to wear them for Reading Half Marathon this sunday. They feel incredibly comfy and are the same as my old ones, which I didn't have to wear in either.

Weather is looking ok. High of 11 degrees and sunny, though am hoping not sunny during race, as am not used to wearing hat/sunglasses etc.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 28/03/2009 11:21

Been out this morning. Blimey it's a bit windy - why is it that the wind is always in your face it's never behind you helping you along?

dd is OK thanks Orm - she's been in for a cardiac related issue and ended up having her pulmonary narrowing dilated. She's fine tis just me who feels frazzled.

Hope the training is going OK hat - not long now.

Peachsmuggler - good luck for tomorrow. Enjoy it

nappyaddict · 28/03/2009 17:39

Didn't go out today cos it was tipping it down with rain and then we had snow!!

OrmIrian · 28/03/2009 17:49

I am going for 10 miles tomorrow morning . I have mapped out a lovely route. I must be taking it seriously as I'm off the wine tonight which is amazing for a saturday

nappyaddict · 28/03/2009 17:55

Are you going on your own Orm?

I find I prefer running on my own cos I can find a pace which suits me best.

What's the windiest anyone has ever been out in? We've got 40 mph winds forecast!!

Twink · 28/03/2009 18:22

Nappy, I remember going out a couple of years ago on a very windy day. It was ok for the first 10 miles or so (marathon training) but then the wind direction changed, the snow started and I honestly felt I was running on a treadmill, I seemed to be making no forward progress whatsoever! Eventually I got back to the town close to where I live and stopped for an emergency loo break, only to find my hands wouldn't work and I couldn't pull my tights back up properly I think that was the most miserable I've ever been while running.

The other time I've been out in particularly extreme gale force winds was for an offroad race (swishyswoshy Saggars!) and I found the biggest bloke I could & tucked in behind him which was fab until we had to run along a ridge & I thought I was going to blow off it...

Just checked the weather for our skitrip tomorrow and we're forecast windchill of -23 by Thursday...

OrmIrian · 29/03/2009 08:00

Yes on my own. I prefer it. I went out with DS#1 on Friday (on his bike) and it was nice to be with him but a very disupted run.

It's lovely here atm. No wind at all.

Wallace · 29/03/2009 08:11

goood luck peachsggler! I'm doing a 10k today - it was blizzarding here yesterday! The race is narer the coast though so hopefully it won't be as cold...

Sorry to hear about your dd, sggar, glad she's on the mend

Orm, I've tried taking ds on his bike with me, but, as you say alythough it is nice to be with him, I much prefer to be on my onwn!

The windiest I have ever run in as far as I remember was the Edinburgh bupa winter 5k up Arthur's seat or somewhere like that. Huge long steep hill and instead of getting a break when you got to the top it was round a corner and into a very strong head wind!

Twink · 29/03/2009 08:23

Good luck for Reading today Peachsmuggler and anyone else doing it. Looks like a lovely morning for it.

OrmIrian · 29/03/2009 11:45

Hope it went well for everyone.

I'm back in one piece and it was lovely. Such a gorgeous day. I left my mp3 player off just to listen to the birds. Took nearly 2 hours though - too many stops to look at the view

peachsmuggler · 29/03/2009 20:27

Blizzards? Where are you all???

I got sun burnt today in Reading! Race was ok, some bits were fun (the shady bits) and some bits were not (the sunny bits).

Not a great time (2 hours 26 ) but am chuffed to have done one.

Right! Am off to drink wine and eat biscuits

Wallace · 30/03/2009 06:58

Well done peachsmuggler, a half is a fantastic achievement

Sunburnt!? We are in the highlands so a bit colder here!

The weather wasn't too bad for my 10k yesterday, but I had a very off day

Never seemd to get in to a rythym, legs were heavy, and I really must get nw running shoes because the ball of my right foot and big toe went numb!

OP posts:
OrmIrian · 30/03/2009 07:59

Highlands! Lucky you . It was pretty here today but not Highlands material. I got a sunburnt nose!

fishie · 30/03/2009 08:29

well done peachsmuggler and good for you orm 10 miles ooer. twink you must have gone by now, hope skiing is fun for you all.

i did 13k yesterday, new shoes and less pain, not at all bad today. didn't put enough suncream on and have freckly eylids.

i have found out that my high arches mean more stress as less bits of foot hitting ground and hence shoes wear out faster.

notyummy · 30/03/2009 08:54

Haven't been on this thread for a while and am very impressed to hear about the 1/2 marathons /full marathons and 10 mile runs!

I did the Lincoln 10k yesterday which was GREAT! It started nearly on time (i have done it 5 times and it is usually very late) and the weather was gorgeous. Loads of support and a good band playing at the halfway point. Ran it with husband, BIL and husbands mate. Speedy Husband did 44 mins something, and I did 53 20secs (which disappointed me as I though I done under 53). However I beat BIL (who is 10 years younger than me!) and husband's mate (who is a Navy officer). 30 secs faster than last year.

One year I will actually train properly for 10k and get under the 50 minute mark....although I guess I beter hurry up and do that as I am not getting any younger. Weather is apparently better for running this week so you can avoid the 'wind always aginst you' syndrome which is bloody annoying!

sfxmum · 30/03/2009 09:54

hello all

am so impressed by all the 10K and half marathons well done all of you, great source of inspiration

not much running last week but am hoping to do better this week

we will be needing a new thread soon

the Spring Running thread

giraffescantdancethetango · 03/04/2009 03:03

Hello was directed here from another thread. Training for 10k in Sept. Having an allergic reaction to antibiotics at the moment and feet very sore from rash so can hardly walk never mind run - back to it next week hopefully.

Ordered some new trainers - looking forwards to getting them.

Themasterandmargaritas · 03/04/2009 17:04

Hello everyone, it's been a while since I posted but lovely to hear of all those 10k and half marathons going on.

Also it is especially funny to hear about you all running now in the sunshine! Last week I ran in 28 degrees and it almost killed me. Fwiw I always use a baseball cap, it stops me wrinkling my eyes and sadly suncream just slithers off with all the sweaty dripping nonesense going on. I think I will look for some sport suncream when I am next back in the UK.

Since the beginning of the week it has been raining which has brought the temperature down and made my running much easier. I am now managing 15ks and going up hills without so much effort as before.

Orm, I have to admit I thought about you and your little erm problem this morning whilst running and prayed that it wouldn't be me needing to nip behind a coffee bush.

maygirl · 04/04/2009 12:02

Hi
I need to join this thread. I've just done the Reading half marathon, and don't want to lose motivation to keep up the running

giraffescantdancethetango · 05/04/2009 08:48

Hi THeMandM 28 degrees? Oh my goodness! I am impressed.

Hiya maygirl well done on doing the half marathon! What have you done before that?

Wallace · 05/04/2009 19:45

Hi maygirl, somebody else on this thread just did the reading half too.

OP posts:
giraffescantdancethetango · 05/04/2009 21:58

Just signed up for 10k - all paid up. O..M..G! No backing out now!

Wallace · 06/04/2009 06:43

Well done! i find that is the best way to get going

OP posts:
Themasterandmargaritas · 06/04/2009 07:16

Well done Giraffes, how are the feet?

Is Reading your first half marathon Maygirl?

For all those running with an ipod, which kind of ipod are you using and can you recommend an armband contraption thingy that works with it? I am currently using an old ipod mini which is about to give up the ghost as are the little plastic pocket things in which it sits attached to my armband.

racmac · 06/04/2009 07:25

Hello

Can i join please

Thinking about joining a beginners running club that is starting tomorrow - they run twice a week for 12 weeks and then you can join the main runners group if you wish.

Bit of an akward time as it starts at 6pm and if dh is at work will struggle to make it.

Where can i find a decent place to buy running trainers? Dont want to go to local Sports shop - it is staffed by teenagers that only manage to grunt at you.

Any advice?
