I'm 44. Fat from DD4, Covid, wfh etc etc. used to be fit, ran a (v slow) marathon at 30, currently get out of breath climbing the stairs. I need to do it.

Tried to do it 3 years ago but gave up when my knees complained.

Run 1 today!

I did week 6 run 3 today so only have 9 runs left. I've definitely got the bug

Weevel · 17/04/2023 08:34

I like running in the drizzle, which is a good job as I live in Manchester. I agree I’d much rather do that than sun! However some of last week was horrendous and a little too rainy for me!

I did week 9 run 1 today and I felt ok at the end so I carried on and I ran 5k! It took 37 minutes so pretty slow but I actually did it.

I can’t believe I’ve gone from counting down till a minute ended in week 1 to running 5k!

Well done Weevel I hope I get to the point where I can run for 5km. I'm never going to be quick, I shuffle along, but I'm determined to keep trying.

Any tips for the dreaded W4?

Go slowly if you need to. Alot of it is mental your mind wants to stop before your body. If you have a route that you have that’s not hilly do that one.
Good luck!!

RomanMum · 20/04/2023 16:52

@Weevel thanks for the advice! Running at the weekend.

DuckWithOneWing · 20/04/2023 20:10

I came on here to brag that one finished W3, so I didn't want to hear W4 described as "dreaded"! My plan is to not look at what it is until after I've done it and just do what the app tells me to.

Any tips for the dreaded W4?

Totally agree with @romanmum on that. Whenever I'm struggling I have to actively make myself assess my breathing, my legs etc and realise that every part of my body is fine and managing the run. It's such a mental shift once you realise that your body can carry on even when your head is saying no more. Let us know how you get/got on.

FrazzledFirefly · 23/04/2023 10:42

Well, I've just completed week 5, run 3 and (v slowly) jogged for 20 minutes. I'm so pleased.

I actually found it a lot easier than the 3 minute runs a few weeks ago. I guess it goes to show that so much of it is in our heads.

I have a problem with my knee so I'm thinking of repeating this run (jog!) again before moving on to week 6.

FrazzledFirefly · 23/04/2023 11:07

Though looking at my stats I'm moving at a slower pace than previously. Which is probably a good thing. Build stamina and then increase speed maybe?

Well done! I've just finished W3R1 but unfortunately with the route I'd planned, both the 3 min runs ended up being uphill 🙄 Needless to say I won't be doing that route next time!

That's good going - I'm sticking to the flat :-)

helpfulperson · 23/04/2023 17:26

I have done Cto5k a few times and have learnt which routes can be used which week to avoid a dreaded uphill slog.

MissAmyPond · 25/04/2023 23:39

Between the terrible weather and a very heavy AF (thanks, perimenopause!) I haven't been running for a few weeks Blush I'm going to work out a schedule starting next week!

RomanMum · 29/04/2023 11:49

Thanks @Weevel and @Redhothoochycoocher done 3 x W4! It was hard work for the second five minutes run today but I kept going, it is having the mental energy to carry on. Also downloaded the NHS app so I have Jo encouraging me on which really helped. Going to repeat the week though, not quite ready for W5 yet. Running in this weather is soooo much better ☀️

DoINeedToDoThis · 29/04/2023 21:28

Finished W3 today. Was supposed to go yesterday but both of my children are poorly and leaving at witching hour (tea time) did not go down well. Means I will have to go BH Monday now, but hey ho. I found the 3 min runs easier today, but I'm not sure how the 5 min ones will feel next week! 😳

RomanMum · 05/05/2023 18:22

Anyone left? Doing last W4 repeat on Sunday before moving on. I find having podcasts playing in the background is easier- with music I soon learned when the run was coming to an end from the playlist.

petalsandstars · 05/05/2023 18:55

I did w5r3 today. With the dog so stopped for 2 pees and to pick up his mess but otherwise ran continuously.
i like having loud music- counting down how many songs are left gets me through

helpfulperson · 05/05/2023 19:01

I have had to take a few weeks off so went out today to just run one minute run one minute walk. I did 15 repetitions and managed just over 3km. I think I'll do this again before going back to week 4.

DoINeedToDoThis · 05/05/2023 23:21

I did W4R1 yesterday, will be going out tomorrow for R2 - those 5 min runs felt looooong!

FrazzledFirefly · 05/05/2023 23:30

I'm still here. Still going :-)

Have repeated w6, r1 and r2. But will aim to do w6, r3 tomorrow.

My heartrate is scarily high the entire time - which concerns me a bit...

FrazzledFirefly · 07/05/2023 11:53

I went out yesterday and did w6, r3. Tried to run really really slowly and just breathed through my nose the entire time. It kept my heartrate lower than usual but my goodness I was slow. V v slow- I think I could ĥave walked quicker!

MissAmyPond · 16/05/2023 22:54

Still here too. Still plodding! I have joined a local running club in their beginners section, hoping it will provide some inspiration and not just encourage me to go to the social events Grin
