If you regularly run ultra, are planning your first or are kinda secretly mulling over the idea of doing one Smile welcome to the party.

Good luck for Sunday, @WithCatLikeTread
I hope you have a really good race, its nice you will no so many other runners around you Smile

I'm incredibly frustrated as I injured my back at crossfit on Wednesday.
I was only on my fourth week Confused
I joined as my breathing was so tricky I couldn't do much running so I thought this might help my overall fitness and now I can't run (or walk much) so I'm in an even worse position.

My ultra run is 3 weeks today and I can't even run a mile right now. I have no idea what to do!

Thanks Relentless. Back sounds ouchy, can only suggest usual, rest ice, ibuprofen. And hope it recovers in time, set a deadline for withdrawing?

I’m up eating porridge and questioning my life choices, lol.

Going to be soooo wet and muddy, expecting to fall over, lots.
State of the course is apparently underwater in places. Only shin deep, and that was before the weekends rain, joy.

Have booked in a roast and prosecco with DH later, ignoring halloween and letting DC get on with that.

emummy · 31/10/2021 08:21

Good luck @WithCatLikeTread!

WithCatLikeTread · 31/10/2021 19:35

It. Was. Hideous.

Weather was appalling, the rain was so heavy and we were running though ankle deep water at times. Other times the sun came out which was nice but the mud underfoot was horrendous. I’d done it before and complained about the mud - it was nothing compared to today!

I never felt like eating, felt queasy most of the run, so didn’t eat enough.
Felt like vomiting for most of the last few miles and stressing about the really strict 7hr cut off. Only carried on because one friend stayed with me and was brilliant.
Last mile (uphill!) I thought I was dying. You come into a field and have to run a lap of it before finishing. I told her to go ahead ad I felt I would throw up right there. Our unofficial running coach was there and he helped me round the lap. Then I crossed the line (stopped my watch lol) and was bending over to throw up when the guy was putting a medal around my neck!

Ent and had a sit down/collapse near the finish line and was retching painfully but had nothing to throw up anyway.

Made the cut off by 5mins. Phew. One lady came in 10 mins late. A few drop outs along the way, not surprisingly.

Hideous and NOT doing again!

For a few years anyway 🙄😂

Am seriously rethinking trail marathon next weekend, I’m just not fit enough for this nonsense!

RelentlessForwardProgress · 31/10/2021 21:21

Bravo @WithCatLikeTread!

Popped onto mumsnet just now especially to see how you were.

That sounds insanely hard.
You did so well to finish.

Do you know the saying, 'life is short, running makes it feel longer'?
I'll bet you remember the race today forever. Smile
I hope you are lying on a sofa watching rubbish tv and eating chocolate!

Hi all. I am doing a marathon this weekend. Off road but not hilly.

My knee is trying to act up. Never had a problem and now it feels weak and ITB tightness Confused

I've booked a sports massage and will just keep calm and carry on Smile

emummy · 03/11/2021 10:51

Good luck @PinkWaterBottle2021! Hope the massage helps.

Well done @WithCatLikeTread! When I’m doing my first - and possibly last! - ultra next weekend I will keep in mind your story of triumph!

PinkWaterBottle2021 · 03/11/2021 14:59

Thankyou!

Had a short run this morning. Now massaged and taped. I think it’s worked - well I’m doing that think of imagining that it’s now cured. Self belief is what I need!

RelentlessForwardProgress · 03/11/2021 20:06

So glad the massage helped @PinkWaterBottle2021. Onwards and upwards to the race

@WithCatLikeTread have you decided if you are going to do your trail marathon? Are you feeling recovered from the weekend yet?

OP posts:
WithCatLikeTread · 03/11/2021 21:58

I still have pain in my right hip.

One of the other runners has asked if we can change to the half marathon - although it will mean waiting around for a couple of hours afterwards for the marathoners. Not sure where it is, whether there’s a cafe (or pub!) we can wait in.

But they haven’t replied anyway. Currently thinking plan Lie In and Stay Home is winning!

PinkWaterBottle2021 · 05/11/2021 20:32

Right. Marathon day tomorrow.

What have I forgotten? No suggestions too stupid.

RelentlessForwardProgress · 05/11/2021 21:35

Watch
Safety pins and number
hydration vest or the like
food/sweets
packet of tissues
plaster or two
lip balm (in case you are a panter like me!)
phone

Have a lovely timeSmile

Given my lack of proper eating last week I’d say sandwiches,.

Most of the other runners had packed mini sandwiches, cheese, marmite, etc. And ate them early on.
I should’ve done that.

Or chocolate, or peanuts, what ever really that you will actually eat.

Depending on the event, a pen for writing emergency info on the back of the number, also useful for making holes for safety pins.

Assuming forecast is dry, take phone.
If poss rain, ziploc bag for phone to keep it dry.

Good luck!

PinkWaterBottle2021 · 05/11/2021 22:43

Amazing. Forgotten a pen.

Need to make cheese sandwich

Thankyou so much!

WithCatLikeTread · 06/11/2021 16:17

How did it go??

I’ve pulled out of tomorrow’s trail marathon and am really looking forward to a lazy day instead!

Did parkrun gently this morning, tempted to sprint ds to the finish but a twinge reminded me not to.

PinkWaterBottle2021 · 06/11/2021 17:48

I considered whether to run it at all because of my knee pain. I went for it. I can’t say it was a mistake but it will take a long time to recover. I can’t walk!

We live and learn!

I think of you get to the point of pulling out it is DEFINITELY the right decision!

RelentlessForwardProgress · 06/11/2021 21:44

well done @PinkWaterBottle2021, fantastic achievement.

I hope you heal up quicker than you think

Have a lovely lazy sunday @WithCatLikeTread

I'm still struggling with my back, its a flipping mess, anything except lying flat on my back is really painful and I think there's no chance at all I can run a 50 miler in 2 weekends time, so i'm gutted.

How is everyone else's weekend going?

emummy · 07/11/2021 10:42

Well done @PinkWaterBottle2021! Hope you are recovered soon.
Sorry about the back @RelentlessForwardProgress, back pain is awful and a real shame to have to miss the race.
I did my last ‘long’ run before next week’s ultra, feeling ok and starting to watch the weather forecast obsessively!

PinkWaterBottle2021 · 07/11/2021 11:32

I can’t actually walk or weight bear so I’m going to A&E ☹️

RelentlessForwardProgress · 07/11/2021 12:46

Oh no! @PinkWaterBottle2021
I'm thinking of you x

OP posts:
emummy · 07/11/2021 14:51

Good luck @PinkWaterBottle2021, hope it's nothing serious

WithCatLikeTread · 07/11/2021 15:21

Oh no! I hope you’re ok.

I have enjoyed not trudging round muddy fields today I must say. Have done lots of jobs at home and didn’t actually stay in bed all morning!

RandomUsernameHere · 07/11/2021 15:45

Oh no @PinkWaterBottle2021 sorry to hear that. How did you get on?

PinkWaterBottle2021 · 07/11/2021 19:02

Ok I didn’t go. I fell asleep after taking some tramodol and actually feel like RICE might be working.

RelentlessForwardProgress · 07/11/2021 19:38

I hope it continues to get better....

Fwiw my friend who is an a and e registrar told me to go at 8am the next morning when I had to take a DC recently, apparently loads of staff have just come on, the pub lot from the night before have generally all been dealt with by then and not many people have had time that morning to injure themselves to fill up the waiting room yet! Worth bearing in mind if it doesn't clear up.
