I’m doing this event tri porttopub.com.au/

I’m swimming all the way myself, as a solo. I couldn’t have even contemplated it a few years ago, but here I am. I’ve joined a squad and met lots of friends along the way, it’s easy to get swept up in the madness!

TriSkiRun99 · 21/02/2020 14:41

Wow that’s a serious long distance ultra swim I really hope it goes well.

FrangipaniBlue · 05/03/2020 11:36

Proper swim envy of @CorrigansDoorKnob Grin

MrsT1405 · 05/03/2020 11:53

Wow, you all sound so compatent! I'm 68, overweight, 2 replaced knees, back surgery for stenosis and residual problems from an old neurological condition. I've managed to swim on and off most of my life and it's the only real exercise I can do. I do a useless breast stroke as my right leg doesn't work. I try to go 4 times a week to our only indoor pool which is tiny. I swim lengths, jog and stretch for 40 mins and I must say it keeps my head straight. I think everyone should swim.....just not at 'my' pool!

Whattodowithaminute · 06/03/2020 12:52

Have been away for a couple of weeks. Seriously impressed with these long distances and open water swimming. I’ve never tried it but we are close to a swimming lake now so maybe I’ll go when it warms up a bit.
Managed 3 swings this week working on technique with more arms than legs and noticeably improved speed and endurance. 2.21/100m to day and 1850 completed.
I’ve started trying tumble turns again and they seem wildly inconsistent...
Any recommendations for exercises/programmes to follow for enhanced core-stability?

ragged · 08/03/2020 20:40

I'm worried about when (if) my pool will close. Bother.

sandwiches77 · 08/03/2020 20:48

any recommendations for googles? Bought mine off the shelf from the sports centre, and they have starting leaking in my left eye. Tried adjusting the strap, putting the googles higher and lower up/down on my head, putting my swim hat over my googles. Nothing is working Angry they are only a month old, Zoggs (decent brand?), but as I said they were off the shelf.... I'm a newbie

TriSkiRun99 · 09/03/2020 15:59

sandwiches i also have to make sure I’ve not got moisturiser on my skin near where the googles sit. But sometimes you do just get a leaky seal I’ve had some that last a few swims and others that last a year, frustrating.

Whattodowithaminute · 09/03/2020 22:04

Managed under 2 mins/100m today for the first time-massive achievement for me. It’s quite a buzz.
I’d feel very sad if my pool was closed now ragged so I can empathise.
sandwiches I’ve been advised against zoggs goggles generally...

Binterested · 09/03/2020 22:12

Not a regular poster but I am a swimmer (as in 40 lengths once or twice a week - no 10k open water business). Not been for a couple of weeks because of cvirus. Anyone got any info on compatibility of virus with swimming pools? I just read the virus doesn’t like humidity so that is encouraging.

MedSchoolRat · 09/03/2020 22:17

It's an enveloped virus so just about anything kills it outside a living host, certainly usual levels of chlorine will, even the low levels typically in tap water.

I am swimming as often as possible before the pool gets closed to prevent crowds.

tizwozliz · 10/03/2020 08:04

I'm using it as a motivator to get swimming more often, I won't put it off until the next day just in case they decide to start closing pools etc.

I've had a lane to myself the past few times I've swum, and the pool has generally been fairly quiet so think there's far more risk from other crowded places.

TriSkiRun99 · 10/03/2020 14:50

Swim England has general advice on their website about the virus. the risk I think is actually the changing rooms and areas outside the pool not the actual pool water which is treated. Our big local pool normally has a permanent smell of wee in the changing area it’s minging, I don’t Swim there much but my children do with the club. I’ve got my leg rock tapped up at the moment due to a running injury which means I can’t easily go swimming either. So stuck with only cycling at the moment and gutted that our long planned Easter ski hols look very likely to be cancelled now Sad

Itsmybirthdaytoday20 · 10/03/2020 22:57

Hi all! Such a motivating thread!

Well done on all your amazing swimming.

Wondered if anyone could help me with ... basically where to start? I’ve not been in a pool since a was a child really but would love to try and get into swimming. Our local pool is 25m and there seems to be plenty of public swimming available.

How do I start this? So many lengths to begin with or do I need to be doing reps with rests in between?

Would love any advice at all you can give! Thanks

lljkk · 11/03/2020 20:09

Step 1: Find out when the different types of swim session are at your local pool, how much do they cost. You may prefer open swimming to lanes (people can get pushy at lanes). The staff can advise which sessions are busier or quieter than others. You don't want to try a fitness swim when the children are having a fun session.

jewel1968 · 14/03/2020 11:44

Are people still swimming in current climate? I have been but wondering if I should continue.

Whattodowithaminute · 14/03/2020 14:27

I went yesterday, it was noticeably quieter and I’m not sure about going again this week. We were supposed to be doing the swimathon for Marie curie on 28th March but one of our team is immunosuppressants so think we will withdraw the team.

MadameF · 15/03/2020 10:17

I'm in France and all public places are closed now so no more swimming for je foreseeable future 😥

jewel1968 · 15/03/2020 12:56

Oh no. Swimming is how I manage other health conditions.

CorrigansDoorKnob · 15/03/2020 13:24

We were notified today that the swim event is cancelled. I may swim there anyway - eek! It’s possible to get an “out of event” swim ratified if you go through official channels. Just need to see whether that’s possible.

tizwozliz · 16/03/2020 20:51

Notified that our open meet is cancelled today too :-(

lljkk · 17/03/2020 03:29

I will keep going until they close. I expect they'll close next Friday

tizwozliz · 18/03/2020 20:43

Swimming club and all local pools closed from yesterday - no more swimming for me :-(

TriSkiRun99 · 19/03/2020 14:23

Pool still open at present but club has cancelled all training and lessons for children. My DD will find it especially hard but the club have already been posting videos of dry land training much to her hurrump Grin she did ask about the paddling pool but it’s only 6ft long 🤣

CorrigansDoorKnob · 21/03/2020 11:32

I guess we can park this thread for a few months. Stay safe everyone and see you on the other side.
