Anyone up for a bit of half m support?

I'm registered to run my first half m in early September.

I'm struggling a bit with motivation tbh. I think I peaked too soon - could have done it 6 weeks ago. I've got time to get prepared though - it's 8 weeks away and I'm not starting from scratch. The most important thing for me is to keep up the strength work or my knees go kerboom.

Anyone else?

And congrats on your HM! I'm in awe.

mammymammyIRL · 27/08/2017 23:17

Thanks roughly did route on my phone & it appears I did 13.84 miles need to drive route when collecting my car tomo so will see.

Good friends always think we're mad Smile

shortaris1 · 28/08/2017 09:08

Well done mammy That's awesome. And mines

Moggle 10k is 10k

Welcome aaaahhh and abra1d I'm doing Glasgow if I'm not injured and what a lovely thing to do for your friend.

Tried to do a 10k yesterday and managed about 5 mins before my heel was in agony so gave up and came home and had a cry. Weeks of training and Ive got sponsorship and everything and I may not be able to do it. I'm off on hols tomorrow so just going to rest and enjoy that and I have osteo when I get back so we'll see. It feels pulled so hopefully rest will help but really annoying.

Abra1d · 28/08/2017 09:19

I'm sorry about your heel, shortaris. Hopefully some rest will see you right.

RMC123 · 28/08/2017 10:16

Mammy that is amazing. Well done you!
Welcome Abra you will be great. Running for something close to your heart works wonders.
Short sorry to hear about your heel. Do you have time to get some advice before you go away? Rest sounds a good plan but there may be something proactive you can do too , to speed up recovery.
Did the 7 miles I was planning this morning. It felt good. Final big run on Friday - aiming for 11miles- before tapering off for the week before.
Excited but also started to get fretful about stupid things now like 'will it be too hot?', getting too and from, being too knackered to drive home, getting enough sponsorship!
But that's just me!

mammymammyIRL · 28/08/2017 10:37

13.11 miles 2 hours 36 mins Grin

I needed that, after two failed half marathons.

Shortaris hope you recover quickly

randomsabreuse · 28/08/2017 12:45

Snots turned into nasty cold with slight fever so haven't run since Thursday morning. Thought about trying this morning but decided another day's rest was necessary - probably a good plan given how meh I felt after a little dog walk with the toddler beast. Did manage 18k steps fencing refereeing yesterday though.

Think it's better to recover fully rather than plough on regardless

shortaris1 · 28/08/2017 13:59

Well done mammy and RMC

I've been to the osteo and have some exercises and seeing him when I get back so I'll do my stretches and see how I go. Don't want taped for a beach holiday. I did a 20 minute HIIT on the bike at the gym today and that felt fine. Going to take my trainers and walk if it feels OK.

Abra1d · 28/08/2017 14:56

RMC I was going to ask about he timing of the last long run pre HM. How long between the two are you/should you leave? I'm up to the wire with my training app and trying to clear the diary for the big runs before the Big Day.

Abra1d · 28/08/2017 14:58

👍

HRHPrincessMegan · 28/08/2017 15:44

Well done mammy and RMC - you are slaying it!

Short - I hope your heel recovers. It's good that you can keep doing cardio while injured without impacting it.

Welcome Abra. What a great motivator you have for your run. I'm following a 9 week HM program - although I can't claim to have been following it religiously as it suggests 5 weekly runs and I doing 4 except last week when I did 3! The plan has the last long run (12 miles) the week before the HM.

moggle - hope you're feeling better.

Rankellior · 28/08/2017 18:48

Well done mammy

BubbleAnimal · 28/08/2017 19:22

Well done Mammy! Great running!

Short, hope the heel heals quickly.

RMC well done on the run.

Abra, I ran 10 miles as my longest run a month before I completed the half. Don't recommend my approach as such though!

I had a great ParkRun yesterday, managed to slay over a minute from my PB. Not feeling any real affects from the Half last Sunday other than bruised toes, but have ordered new trainers. Went for a 5 mile exploring run yesterday with a water pack in the heat as well which was good. Slight niggles in calves and shins now though, so resting today and tomorrow. Might get out Wednesday night, but might leave it until Thursday am. Still need to book my next half, think I'm aiming for end of November? Will be clearly very different weather wise to now!

Abra1d · 28/08/2017 20:45

Thanks for the advice, all!

HRHPrincessMegan · 29/08/2017 20:37

First run of the week completed - 5 miles and I thought I was going to barf from mile 2. Note to self: don't eat a heavy dinner 1hr before running.

How's everyone else getting on?

Rankellior · 29/08/2017 22:26

First run after the weekends 10k - tried some speed training which was more much difficult than usual steady pace. Think I've 2 weeks now of more running no more than a 10k at a time before the long pre race 10 milers kick in. cant decide if I'm looking forward to it or dreading it. Grin

mammymammyIRL · 29/08/2017 22:39

Hi everyone, I haven't run since Sunday evening & am swaying between going tomo morn & not going! I'm running 7k thurs eve anyhow. I feel like I've wasted half the week if I don't go in the morning. Wwyd need to be at work for 7.10 can eat breakfast there though.

mammymammyIRL · 30/08/2017 06:13

Decided not to run this morning snoozed alarm & Facebook'd instead.
7km tomo even & a shortish run at weekend is my current plan. Perhaps myself & ds will go for a walk while dd is at camogie training fri eve too

Abra1d · 30/08/2017 09:24

I find it so hard to run first thing in the morning. My body finds it much harder work than later on. I'm lucky to work at home, though, so can sneak out later on. I've always empathetically not been a lark.

Abra1d · 30/08/2017 09:36

... but have a dilemma on Sunday as we are flying to Spain and leaving home at 7.30am. I feel I have to stick religiously to my training app programme as I am very close to the wire with Just over 14 weeks to go. Sooo, get up and do the 50 mins run/walk just before six am? Which I will find appalling but at least it will be DONE.

Or do it when we get to Spain, in the evening? Probably still very hot but my body would be more awake and there could be interesting things to look at in a new place?

Hmmm.

minesapintofwine · 30/08/2017 09:57

Abra I read that as 50 miles! However I would aim to it before going but I know in reality I wouldn't have time before going on holidays as I would be still packing etc Blush.

Have a lovely holiday those that are going! short a holiday may do your heel good (fingers crossed for you)

mammy that plan sounds absolutely fine I wouldn't worry that you didn't get out this am.

I haven't run since Sunday. Was so busy wallowing in self satisfaction I almost forgot I should be scheduling in some runs! My plan is to get a 7km in by the end of the week (when I don't know but maybe Friday eve as Dh will take dc to rugby tots) and 5km on Sunday. I'll try and do speedwork on Monday/Tuesday. Dc go back on Wednesday. I'll attempt longest running of 11-12 miles on the Friday and then get back into my lovely term time routine tapering down on the long runs (think it'll be about 3 weeks to go then).

I'm not planning on running the full 13.1 miles until d-day do you think I should? Also wasn't planning on doing more than 10k in the two weeks leading up?

Abra1d · 30/08/2017 10:16

😂 mines 50 miles.

BubbleAnimal · 30/08/2017 10:23

Mines, sounds like how I did it tbh. I ran ten miles in July, then max of 10k leading up to the half.

I haven't run since Sunday. Need to stretch and get out there. Hoping tonight or tomorrow AM, and then Saturday park run. If I get other stuff done I might go for a long run Sunday.

mogglemoo · 30/08/2017 13:40

I'm back!

I have been reading, but didn't want to bring the thread down. God, this runnng malarkey is a complicated business...

After my disastrous run on Sunday, I was going to do a 10K on Monday but only ended up doing 5k and crying all the way home.

I gave my head a wobble. This is meant to be 'enjoyable' or at least not turning me into a self loathing, snivelling mess. I got back out there.

Today was my last chance at a long run before the GNR and, although I wanted to try for 20k, I managed another 18k run. And I'm taking that as a win! I can visualise what 3k extra will be and am fairly positive I'll manage on the day. So, 10 September I'll be running a half marathon for the very first time 😳😬🥇

mines: when I did my first 10K race, I ran 9.76k as I wanted to run the full 10K for the first time for the race. I think it's personal preference, just like running shoes, clothes, AM or PM runs. What would make you feel good?

mammy: a rest is as good as a run! It's not like you don't have a run planned!

Oh, and asked my husband if men have the same issues as women when running. Apparently, you can feel ok, but 1k in be desperate for the loo and then, when you stop for a pee (easier for him than us), nothing much comes out. But no 'dribble-age'.

And on that note, I've sent off for a free sample of the Always equivalent of 'Tena Lady'. Filling in the form was slightly less embarrassing that having the Tesco man deliver!

Abra1d · 30/08/2017 14:13

Adrenaline and the crowds cheering will get you through.
