The newsest thread for all runners to chat and keep track of their miles. Everyone welcome for support, guidance and general running talk including very important kit choices Wink

Hope your knee settles down MyBlackCat.
Last run of the year done, and very soggy it was too! Still some icy patches in the forest tracks but much better. Happy New Year everyone!

Hi! I'm back after a lengthy December break. I want accountability and I like this thread, so I hope you don't mind my joining again. I have done 2 miles today. Nothing too excessive.

The total for January now is 9.
Will there be a new thread?

emummy · 02/01/2018 19:19

Welcome back Firefries. There will indeed be a new thread, so bring us your miles!

mayathebee · 02/01/2018 23:13

Hi, can I join? I've just started running again after a long time. I'm very unfit and about 4 stone overweight so the first couple of runs have been tough! I managed a couple of 5k plods last week and then plucked up my courage and joined a running group on Monday. It was great and I managed a slow 4 miles with them. I'm aiming to run 3 times a week, sticking to 3 - 4 miles until that feels more comfortable. I'm also aiming for a medal from a run or virtual run every month (I'm like a magpie and love a shiny medal Grin). I've signed up for 25miles in January with race at your own pace.

Right, I'm off to read through the rest of the thread.

emummy · 03/01/2018 09:23

Welcome maya! Well done on getting out, it takes a bit of courage doesn't it! Glad you enjoyed the running club. The numbers in bold are our cumulative total for the month, so when you go for a run you can add your miles on. Have fun & good luck!

NoCryingInEngineering · 03/01/2018 09:48

After a bit of lurgy induced down time I've found myself an improvers 10k plan to follow for the next few weeks. Run 1 was 30mins easy, today is meant to include some strength & conditioning work, Friday hills and Sunday is the long run.

For the hills it says run up, jog down, repeat, so I guess it doesn't matter within reason how long the hill is, you just do more or less reps. But how hard do you run the hills? As fast as you possibly can? Or at a pace where you can get up easy enough the first time bit by the end of the session you know you'll be hurting?

I should probably find a running club

NoCryingInEngineering · 03/01/2018 09:49

Oh and yesterday's run was 3 miles so
12
And with maya's 4 that makes
16

emummy · 03/01/2018 10:21

For hills you can do short, takes about 60 sec to get up, or longer. i think you set a good pace up and you can jog or walk down. I think it is maybe better to run up quite hard for a fewer number of reps, then increase the reps. I have a hill I started with 5 reps on, now I can do 2 lots of 6.
Julian Goater's book 'The art of running faster' divides hills into whether you are training for speed or for stamina. For speed he suggests 30sec hard up hill, jog down, 4 sets of 4 with 3 minutes rest between, or 2x3 90 sec up hill. If it's for strength and stamina, you don't run them quite as hard but you do more reps. And start off with fewer, then build up.

NoCryingInEngineering · 03/01/2018 13:33

Thanks, that makes sense. It's DDs first session at nursery on Friday & I've identified 2 possible hills. Now to get over my embarrassment at running up and down the same bit of street repeatedly...

Firefries · 03/01/2018 19:59

Hi y'all, I'm adding two more miles and trying not to get a rhythm and maybe so more soon.
That's 18 miles.

Firefries · 03/01/2018 20:00

*some more - I hope to build up again

Sorelip · 03/01/2018 22:55

No runs for Jan so far - I've been struck down by norovirus. Had to cancel pilates for tonight as well, dagnamit!

emummy · 04/01/2018 08:13

Oh no Sorelip, that's not good! Hope you are better soon.
Up early for frosty run in the dark before taking kids trampolining.

cinnamongreyhound · 04/01/2018 09:50

Welcome mayathebee you’d be most welcome! Welcome back Firefries, I think I’ll start a new thread and try to get some more interest from some people with their New Years resolutions or doing the RED challenge.

I have Tuesday night and this morning to add, I’m so fed up with the rain now!! Getting wet while running, horrible muddy ground and general miserableness of it all!!! 29.2
