Will post the race list later on computer.
Come one, come all. We are a band of maverick posters who run, talk about running, and talk about other stuff, mostly life, large pants, and questionable children's artwork. Come and join us if you dare! Disclaimer: we are actually the friendliest thread on MN. Fact.

Cherry, just a quick post, re no music. They were really strict about this at the Ipswich Half last year, loads of signs saying you will be ejected from the race if you use them. I hadn't practiced without but in the end it was okay, although I did spend a lot of time searching for the hero inside myself and feeling proud in my head (not my normal choice of running song).

I did see one person with headphone wires taped behind her ears, but only one. I'm determined to try some of my longer runs music free this time. The upside though was really hearing the support from the crowd and the marshals, I found that a great help, especially when I was struggling at 11 - 12 miles.

bonkersLFDT20 · 04/01/2012 22:13

N4NNY what's running school? Is that like running club, but with learning included? Do you have to take exams?! Well done though!

Cherry Ditch the ear phones and run with ME! We can sing if you like.
What do you like? I have very broad tastes - classical, musicals, Carpenters, kids songs, Kate Bush (might be a bit screechy!), Take That, bit of Ed Sheeran if you like, or Tinie Tempah (the last two are in my repetoire courtesy of the pre-teen). That's sorted then. Honestly, train without them for a while so you're used to it and you'll love it.

futurity · 04/01/2012 22:15

Lol...I have visions of us crazy MN ladies singing like loons at Cambridge!

bonkersLFDT20 · 04/01/2012 22:16

Welcome 8oreighty! This is the best thread on MN. It's a shame there isn't a thread competition, because we can get competitive at race time.

bonkersLFDT20 · 04/01/2012 22:17

futurity Loons? Us? Not I. I sing in a choir I'll have you know actually I'm on very extended mat. leave, but I WILL return

bonkersLFDT20 · 04/01/2012 22:19

..and screaming "look there's a cock". Shall we take a little note book to keep a tally? Maybe that can be cherrys job to keep her mind off the lack of earphones. There are some highly educated cocks in Cambridge.

[checking I'm on the right thread before posting]

N4NNY · 04/01/2012 22:28

bonkers it's these guys aarontyler.co.uk/running-club1/
The running club I go to on a Monday we just run you choose from 2,3,4 or 6 miles and just run. My Wednesday running group with Aaron we do all sorts of technique work so I always call it running school we don't really do much just running. Today we did intervals last one before Christmas we did stride work.

fannybanjo · 04/01/2012 22:31

I kept a mental tally bonkers at GNR but there were that many that I couldn't count any more. Grin. A couple were out at Lancaster but Conwy Cockwatch was a total wash out.

AngeChica · 04/01/2012 22:42

Hello new thread. Lots of good pants talk.

I feel a bit pulverised. Been to club tonight 5 miles with a group that was too fast for me, half of into a blasting wind and then an hour's "strength and conditioning" session lots of squats and lunges etc. I was fearful of the old pelvic floor I can tell you.

Needy Facebook plea: www.facebook.com/Angechica

I think Cambridge is a bit posh for cocks; you could do "Member" watch instead? Though Cambridge Cockwatch has a better ring to it.

stickyLFDTfingers · 04/01/2012 23:09

LOL at you lot squawking singing lustily round the Cambridge half Grin. I wish I could be there to see that.

Shock Shock Shock Shock

SonicMiddleAge · 05/01/2012 00:57

Shred Master and Margarita is one of my favourite books too ? it?s excellent
Debi I have the 30 yr old WW Birthday cake book my mum used, and the one out now. The toilet roll ?holder Barbie cake is alive and well, and indeed has been made at at least two parties dd went to this year....

On the other matters of the day, I have had my eyebrows done twice in my life, including for my wedding day. I used to wear g-strings, but post baby decided that it wasn?t flattering, and switched to high-leg. Round About that time I gave up the La Perla habit for esprit. I am a glam mum... Running I wear Bonds girls boxer style pants. My worst ever g-string experience was on a work trip where I ended up with a free day in LA, which I spent by the pool, g-string bikini after a summer in normal swimming bottomb. The untanned exposed flesh burnt to a crisp, and I had a 14hour flight home the next day when sitting was agony...

I always train with my ipod, but quite like not being allowed for races, I never chat, but I like the environment with other people being around and I do actually think it makes me focus more on running and pace, whearas I can just drift a bit with music sometimes, which is fine for training, but less so for a race.

bonkersLFDT20 · 05/01/2012 06:45

Just asked on FB, but I'll ask the same here. Is it safe to run in 25mph winds?
Can't actually see how gusty it is atm as it's still dark! What do you think?

RunnersFestiveTipple · 05/01/2012 07:57

I would have thought you'd be okay bonkers depending on where you are running, i.e. not next to busy road with high sided vehicles, under lots of creaky trees that might drop branches, high cliffs, river you might get blown into....

I'm planning on going out later on quiet country lanes, with a friend, but I think if I were on my own I'd take a phone.

fannybanjo · 05/01/2012 08:52

bonkers who on FB are you friends with? So I can find you - also pass me your initials again!

WishIwasCherryMenlove · 05/01/2012 09:12

We could be a slightly sweaty and out of breath version of the military wives choir bonkers

Or I might wear a completely comedy costume so that everyone cheers me on for looking like a loony

Going to running club tonight hopefully which is obviously music free, and then I'll try a longer run at the weekend also music free

right, I'm allegedly working at home today, must get down to it, tata for now.

ibbydibby · 05/01/2012 10:46

cherry I think more and more races are stipulating no headphones, organisers just don't want to take the risk of someone getting hurt.

On the other hand, I was helping at a water station last weekend for a 10k race, where headphones were allowed but the organisers encouraged runners to just use one earpiece.

Race was along quiet country roads with little traffic. As the final few stragglers were passing through there was a lady, on her own wearing one earpiece only. She was oblivious to the car behind her, and one of the others at the water station called out to her that once she had had her drink she needed to move over to the side of the road as there was a car behind. She didn't hear him! In the end 2 of us had to go up to her and encourage her to the roadside. Quite an eye opener.

Sonic in response to your post of (I think) yesterday morning, I am job-hunting. I currently work from home as a distance learning tutor, but getting less work due to the usual cuts, and as I have been doing this for 14 years or so I feel it is time to get out of the house again. Not good timing though!

Pants: if running in morning, just go with whatever I slept in. If in afternoon, go in what I am wearing. Eyebrows: pluck or wax.

Weird backache I think after long run yesterday. Windy again here today.

Anyone seen BBC trailers for dramatisation of "Call the Midwife"? Is Miranda in it, or Miranda lookalike?

ibbydibby · 05/01/2012 10:49

Ok I give in, since you are all on Facebook how do I find you?

fishie · 05/01/2012 10:54

aaargh this morning I was too chicken. Yesterday it was proper stars in the sky night at 6.30am and it is soo dark in the woods. Will have to sneak out of work early.

peachsmuggler · 05/01/2012 11:18

ibby, i've pmd you my fb details, you can find other rubbers through me!

OMG, less than an hour till I go running Grin. Conditions look perfect!!!

Wish me, and my poor pelvic floor, luck!!!

stickyLFDTfingers · 05/01/2012 11:27

good luck peach! Good luck peach'spelvicfloor kegel kegel kegel...

I wish conditions looked perfect here - it's still dark and windy. Must go out though

ibby that is a bit scary re the woman not hearing. I was driving along a dark country road at Christmas and came up behind a runner - who was wearing reflective gear and everything, just not the real properly hi-vis stuff - and he was practically invisible until I was a few yards behind him. And I'm obviously a runner-friendly driver. Made me think, though I'm lucky I don't need to run on roads.

8oreighty · 05/01/2012 12:42

OK I have purchased some cheap, but decent clothing...realised that I can't get by in my baggy cotton bottoms in this weather. As soon as it's not hurricane conditions I will start...today I fastwalked 5 miles in the rain and wind...anyone else run with a biggish dog? Is it feasible, or madness?

8oreighty · 05/01/2012 12:44

and hi fishy - me old mate, is it ok to be friends on mumsnet if we know each other IRL?

8oreighty · 05/01/2012 12:44

sorry 'fishie'

YeahThatsTheBadger · 05/01/2012 13:13

Have friend requested you on fb fanny. and Cherry too. (I hope!)

Good luck with the run today Peach!

rhetorician · 05/01/2012 13:20

how'd it go peach? hoping to get up to the gym to do a bit of tempo running later on; dd2 is piling on the pounds, 9lbs 3 - a couple of oz ahead of where she should be. No-one wants to see her again until 3 months Shock...bright out, but the wind is very strong and very very cold (dd1 and I just went up to look at the deer in the park)

I never run or cycle with headphones for the reasons outlined here - only place I use them is in the gym
