ha ha, there's clearly a whole generation who will bond over memories of their mothers doing peculiar contortions in front of the telly when they were wee...

backwardpossom · 16/11/2011 22:08

"Silly mummy, what a doin?"

stickyLFDTfingers · 16/11/2011 22:13

ha rhet I get little "helpers" when I'm doing the exercising DVDs. DD2 with her little bottom in the air is hilarious (sorry, "tush" since I've had the Shred) and DD1 is bloody annoying by being very flexible and stomach muscles of iron with a "what are you panting about?" look on her face Angry

DebiTheScot · 16/11/2011 22:13

My goal is to run for more than a month without getting sore shins Sad. I'm annoyed.

monkeyLFDTwench · 16/11/2011 22:14

Ds3 comes to my Thursday circuit class outdoors. The trainer has given him some tiny weights so he can join in. He especially likes doing "plunges" (lunges) but whenever I go to the mats he says "why you lyin' down, mummy?" - not necessarily what you want to hear when you're working hard!

Wheelybug · 16/11/2011 22:17

Shredders - has anyone done the 6 week 6 pack and shred ? What's the difference ? I have the former but haven't used it much.

Good news on ds' appointment monkey

Procrastinating on signing up for 10k in 2 weeks. Don't think I'm back in the swing
Of things since last one. Should sign up to
Kick arse into gear.

Feeling knackered this evening. My schedule for tomorrow should have been body balance followed by 3 miles but think I'm going to go shopping instead but been wondering if that's a cop out. But feeling knackered and think I have a bit of a cold. Have done long run Monday, swim yesterday and 5 miles intervals followed by swim lesson today. Hmmm. Might be Able to do 3 miles in the evening if dh gets home before 9 but it's unlikely.

Dither dither. Am a winge bag today - will shut up and go to bed.....Smile

Wheelybug · 16/11/2011 22:18

Grr at shins debiSad

Wheelybug · 16/11/2011 22:21

Hmm goals....

Not sure about 5k time
Sub 50 10k (pb 50.something so hopefully achievable )
Sub 1.50 half by end of next yr

No plans for a marathon next year but only
Plan to ever do 1 and would like to do sub 4 but getting round would be good (seems impossible)

rhetorician · 16/11/2011 22:22

debi yeah, bollocking shins. I think I might market my own shred dvd based on copying every action that a toddler does - totally exhausting if you've ever tried...dd likes me to make her fly in the air whilst I am sitting and she sits on my lower legs. That is some ab workout with 28+lbs of wiggly child!

peachLFDTsmuggler · 16/11/2011 22:26

Fanny, were you about to break into song after that post?? ; )

sfx, look at it this way m'dear. More pens for you!!

monkey, Curly Wurly's are fucking tiny these days eh? That sounds like a lovely day on your own. Great news on DS's appointment, despite the logistics!

Right, am off to do Imaginary Shred with imaginary skipping rope.

stickyLFDTfingers · 16/11/2011 22:26

debi wishing you unsore shins....

wheely you sound knackered my love. Definitely go to sleep and think about it all later.

ange it's a mile to the railway paths from our house. Once on them I can run for miles and miles and miles without seeing any tarmac, it's great!

monkey was yours a law book (or something more interesting? Wink)

Off to look at the Northumberland Coastal challenge now!

DebiTheScot · 16/11/2011 22:38

Oh they're so annoying. Had been ok apart from the odd twinge then tonight when I was only doing 3.5 miles one of them was sore again. I don't know what to do. I'd gone out feeling positive as well, I don't have much time on a Wed so had decided to make Wed my short quality run day. Same route as I did last week where I tried a fast mile in the middle. Did same again tonight and knocked 8 seconds off the mile and could still run at a decent pace after it but then the stupid pain appeared again.

I haven't read the thread properly, just skimmed it really. Someone asked if I'm a secondary teacher- yes I'm a science teacher. The boy who got 1 out of 30 laughed when I gave him his paper back, he was promptly sent out and given a piece of my mind!

My friend still hasn't had her baby but is in labour according to her brother.

SonicMiddleAge · 17/11/2011 01:10

2012 Goals
HM: sub 2hrs (nb ? this is the big one ? haven?t run more than 15km before)
10km: sub 50 ? Should be very acheiveable - I do 7.5km at this pace most weeks on my way to work, and I can get a 49min 10km on the treadmill, but so far in a real run outside it eludes me.
Perth City to Surf (12km) sub 1 hr

Love all the exercising toddlers. My dd' wanted me to do exercises with them yest. eve so we did cruches, bycycle legs, leg raised etc. What made it even more amusing was they were both in Cinderella dresses...

Debs - I know you don't want to hear it, but laying of running for a bit is probably the answer - cycling etc still ok... I can talk though, I'm meant to be going to the GP to discuss the reuslts of my knee scan and have put the appoitnement off until after my 15km race on the 27th so I don't get told not to do it...

SonicMiddleAge · 17/11/2011 01:25

Fanny - regarding your friend, the whole "fat burning zone" and heart rate thing is pretty much a misunderstanding of the science. It is true that when you exercise in the fat burning zone, you burn the highest percentage of calories from fat while exercising. Obviously however, weight loss depends only on the total amount of calories burnt and higher intensity exercise burns more than lower intensity exercise. Moreover, the impact of sport on weight loss is actually threefold - the calories that are burnt during exercise, plus the fact that exercise activates the metabolism so the body continues to burn a lot more calories than normal after exercise is completed, and the longer term build up of muscle mass (Muscles use more energy than the rest of the body tissues). The only way that lower intensity exercise is better for weight loss then is if it means you can do it longer and in total burn more calories ? e.g. at the extreme, an hour?s brisk walk is going to be better than 5mins running, then collapsing?

Not that this is a hobby horse of mine, or annoys me whenever I see the fat burning zones ?bollocks--- on exercise machines oh no...

bonkersLFDT20 · 17/11/2011 06:32

I'm loving all the targets. Did you all set some last year? Have you met them?

Monkey why is your DS being referred? I'm glad the wheels are in motion.

Debi it was me who asked about your job. DS1 is in year 8 and I often wonder what it's like from the teacher's point of view.

Regarding wee ones commenting on what you're doing, DS2 has supported me at races, but mostly if I say I'm going running he'll pump his little arms and say "Mummy fall over", clearly remembering when I got pushed over by the enthusiastic student tripped over and grazed my knee really badly.

DrNortherner · 17/11/2011 08:05

Morning all, just caught up Smile

I have A DAY OFF WORK TODAY TO SEE ds's assembly at school. He is doing a presentation on Vikings. (soz about random caps)

Can't decide if I should run today or go Christmas shopping and run this eve when ds is at cubs.......hmm......

Goals for 2012:
PB for HM (must beat 1.58 to achieve this)
Sub 50 10k
Have no 5k goal as no Park runs near me

Re coats I have a Berghaus for watching footie/cross country etc, a gorgeous navy coat I got from TopShop last year that is very stylish but too nice for sport watching and a fake sheepskin biker jacket type thing that I got from Debehnahms that I get loads of comments on.

futurity · 17/11/2011 08:33

Goals for 2012:

27 min 5k
58 min 10k
sub 2 hour 15 half.
To stop feeling ill after events!
To be able swim lengths with ease rather than having to stop at the end of each one.
Maybe a triathlon. (dependent on the swimming goal above)

DebiTheScot · 17/11/2011 10:39

If I get time later I'm going to upload my Garmin runs and look at how many miles I've done since the last injury break. I don't think I've increased too much too quickly but maybe I have.
The problem with not running is I can't think what else to do. I can't cycle more than once a week as I can't get out during the day except at the weekend. And I don't find it as hard work and sweaty either! Apart from Shred everything else costs money. I fancy circuits, maybe will look and see if there's a class I can join.

Oh shit, I just projected this by accident in front of a class of yr 9s!!

stickyLFDTfingers · 17/11/2011 10:51

LOL debi it could have been a lot worse, given what we've been chatting about upthread!!

stickyLFDTfingers · 17/11/2011 11:08

OK, goals. First - to keep running and keep enjoying it and not get injured.

Second: 5k: 27 mins
10k: 55 mins
HM: (not sure about what's realistic here) let's say 2:10. May change this in the summer when I know how the training's going.
And do a marathon!

I think rhet's overall mileage target is a good idea too - just trying to figure out's what realistic (I only started running again at the end of April this year, so I don't have a year's worth of figures, and each month seems to be very different depending on school holidays Confused). Perhaps 70 miles per month on average? 8400 isn't the catchiest number! And I guess my averages will go up on marathon training Confused so easily Confused!

rhetorician · 17/11/2011 11:09

nearly as good as my fucking criminal belt moment, debi, and yes, you had a lucky escape (it could have been bras or squits or pelvic floors or kinky beds...)

OP posts:
bonkersLFDT20 · 17/11/2011 11:26

rhet Are you a criminal? Wink

futurity · 17/11/2011 11:54

Just checked on my Garmin Connect and it says this year I have done: 635.37 miles. Quite weird to see it written down like that! Works out at roughly 57 miles a month.

Just uploaded 2010 (but not sure if have all data) and it says I did 159.96 miles...blimey...big difference! Suppose that is training for 2 half marathons that made this year so high (for me!).

stickyLFDTfingers · 17/11/2011 12:11

futurity that is quite a difference! Can you "feel" it in you?

I've been very wicked just wasting lots of time on the run britain website. You can put your stats in (if you have a park run barcode number it will pick up all your times from that). Looking at the marathon training plans (I think I'm beyond the "get round" one, but seems a bit crazy doing the next one up - sub 4 hours - if I can't do a HM in under 2 hours. But maybe just follow th plan and see where it takes me...)

futurity · 17/11/2011 12:32

I'll have to look at that website (having just wasted time playing with Garmin Connect and playing with all the reports...seriously anal!)

Yes...can definitely feel it in me...feel more like a runner now and can see that I do have potential to do better. Not saying I can get to sub 2hr halfs or anything but so long as I keep improving at each event I will be happy with that :)
