The Couch to 5k 2011 - Part 3 : Keep Holding My Hand So We Don’t get Separated!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/07/2011 23:07

Yet more space for us to talk about our progress on the Couch to 5K programme, the stuff we wear and the music we listen to! New runners are warmly welcomed - come and give it a whirl, you know you want to! There has been a lot of success on this thread, both in the UK and internationally, moral support is abundant, and there is always a kick up the arse for anyone who needs one!

If we stick together we will enjoy success, I thought song lyrics were appropriate so in the words of Gwen Stefani.. Grin

Run, running all the time
Running to the future
With you right by my side
Me, I'm the one you chose
Out of all the people
You wanted me the most

Running, running, as fast as we can
As fast as we can
Do you think you'll make it?
Do you think we'll make it?
We're running, keep holding my hand
It's so we don't get separated

Be, be the one I need
Be the one I trust most
Don't stop inspiring me...

Good luck everyone x
Wine

Hello! Just thought I'd pop in and add a bit of encouragement / support. I was posting back in April / May when I started C25K and stopped posting when we moved house. I didn't stop running though, and I now feel that I can officially describe myself as "a runner". Grin I'm dong about 7 miles three times a week, and I've literally never felt fitter. I would NEVER have imagined 6 months ago as I gasped through 1.5 minutes of running that I could one day run three miles, let alone seven. I remember reading similar posts from C25K graduates back then, and found it strangely reassuring to hear that they too had huffed and puffed their way through those difficult early weeks!

Anyway, WELL DONE to you all and keep it up Grin

PS Podrunner intervals music REALLY helped!

BafangaTheSombre · 12/10/2011 15:56

Hey all

Just had a really really rubbish run. w4r3, couldn't get my stride, think that my bra was slightly too tight! and just didn't settle at all. Think I am going to repeat the whole of week four again. Even struggled with the 3 minute runs today Sad.

Sorry to hear about your loss nell.

babycham glad I am not the only one with the week 4 wall!! Grin
maybe - I am also heading to Aldi to get a running jacket. Funny how no matter what activity I take up - it always ends up with spending money!

molly I aspire to be disappointed that a race is only 9k and not 10k Grin. I feel exhausted and I am only covering about 4k at the minute. But I would have been gutted at the kids not seeing me finish though.

jelli I am very nervous about the winter running, I can't walk on ice, let alone run on it. I may move my running to post work (finish at 3) so that it is not icey. Can't bear the thought of breaking something.

RIght off to make myself a great big mug of tea.
Happy running
Bafana

babycham42 · 12/10/2011 18:10

Right,done Wk4R2.

We CAN do this maybe and Bafana.

It was easier today than R1 but still challenging - but lets face it though if it's too easy it ain't helping.

KristinaM · 12/10/2011 20:53

Did w5r2today in 32.30 mins. Im very please with myself. Its alos the first time ive gone out in the rain, becAuse im a wimpBlush. TBH it was onlny a light drizzle. Since i live in scotland i guess i cant stay in all winter

Went to aldis for the runnig gear. Apparently its not in until tomorrow ( unless thats just our local branch ) . Will check it out tomorrow

NellVarnish · 13/10/2011 00:21

Oh you are all so sweet and kind, thank you Thanks all for your kind words. We are most certainly NOT a nest of vipers are we?!

I'm still up but should be in bed because someone made me join Pinterest and I am now addicted. Lovely to see everyone out and about. Well done molly, and well done to everyone else too - you are all brilliant, in more ways than one.

Night night, sweet dreams.

NellVarnish · 13/10/2011 00:33

This is for you all.

Tis me.

I really AM going to bed. Really. No REALLY.

shreddedandnotatallsmug · 13/10/2011 00:55

Are you still there Nell?

shreddedandnotatallsmug · 13/10/2011 01:01

Grin just realised how slow MN is at night. I was really excited to see our thread on the front page, but Nell's post was over 20 mins ago!

I did a 4k slow run yesterday morning and had another go at the Jillian yoga DVD today. I will try to go out tomorrow morning, but am making up for a rubbish day with Wine so may need to stay in bed instead Grin.

I was the bad weather queen last year. I reached a point where I stopped checking the outside temperature before going out, as it was so far below zero that I would not have gone if I'd have known. One morning I ended up having to haul myself up First Avenue by holding onto the walls of the buildings because there was so much ice on the ground Grin. As long as you are well wrapped up (hat and gloves) you can do it!

Good to see you again spawn!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/10/2011 07:10

The memory of you hauling yourself up in the ice still makes me
We were all moaning about it being chilly and there you were in extreme conditions!!

Right. I am going to restart myself on the programme in half term. Why don't you join me lovely Bear? I shall need moral support combined with a really massive kick up my massive arse.

OP posts:
shreddedandnotatallsmug · 13/10/2011 12:38

pistey do you NOT have a massive behind.

But I'm happy to give you a massive kick!

I re-did week one today for the umpteenth time. I still can't break the 5k/30 min barrier.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/10/2011 14:20

You lot need a new thread, but make sure I come with you please and don't get left behind Sad

And yes please to a really swift kick Sweaty x

OP posts:
NellVarnish · 13/10/2011 23:02

sweaty I must've just missed you. Sad I finally managed to drag myself away from MN/Pinterest and go to bed. Did you run, or is that tomorrow? At least you went out which is more than I did. It was a beautiful autumn day here today, the trees look gorgeoise and the sun was shining - love this time of year. Wonder what the winter will bring?

Pistey - how's the knitting? I'm going to pop some flowers in the post to Knotty tomorrow, sorry it's so close to the deadline. No wool yet for chipmonkey's blankie, but as soon as it arrives, I'll get cracking. Have you been running? A kick up the arse is what I need God knows it's a big enough target, you wouldn't miss it. May join you at half term under cover of darkness as there will be millions of schoolchildren around in daylight hours who will be pointing and arfing at me.

Have just painted my nails for the first time for ages, haven't been in the mood, in China Glaze Street Chic which goes perfectly if sensibly with the MN scarf. My nails look like chocolate buttons. And I look a bit like Bet Lynch. Grin

to everyone

shreddedandnotatallsmug · 14/10/2011 04:09

Nelly I ran this morning (Thursday). Should be shredding tomorrow but have had even more Wine than last night, so may not arise from my bed in time - and we are out tomorrow night so no chance then.

I'm liking the brown nails. Have just broken both my little finger nails - not sure how or why!

babycham42 · 14/10/2011 18:25

Hello everyone!

Completed Wk4 today and had a lovely time.As if by magic it had eased up just enough for the 3rd run.The sky was blue, warm, with a lovely breeze and for my Friday 'run' I'm fortunate enough to be able to do it in the countryside. It's a lovely unwind at the end of the week.

Have a good weekend everyone!!! (hope you're doing OK Bafana - have you been out again yet?)

maybetoday · 14/10/2011 22:21

Hey everyone,
I did the first run of week 4 today and it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Think I must be getting a bit fitter. :)
Thanks for all your tips on running kit, will try to pick some stuff this weekend.
Where does everyone run? At the moment I've just been doing laps of the park, but it's starting to get a bit samey so thinking I might start braving the city streets as I start doing longer bits of running.
Hope everyone has a good weekend. Good running!

NellVarnish · 14/10/2011 23:21

Look! Look what I've found!

The Bear Grylls of bras!

Well done sweaty, maybe and babycham on your runs!

babycham42 · 14/10/2011 23:41

Nell that's brilliant!!

Would you wear the bra with or without the scarf?

Votes now.Do I do my fingernails in green (ready for Halloween),red with red sparkles on top,or gold? As you can tell I am a woman of considerable taste....

babycham42 · 14/10/2011 23:44

maybe I usually run on the way to things (picking kids up) but on Fridays I go out with no agenda so head into the country.I want to explore around a bit once I'm running for longer periods therefore covering a greater distance.

BafangaTheSombre · 15/10/2011 11:49

Hey all

Did week 4 run 3 today. Went so much better - thank goodness. Am going to repeat the week anyway. And just get it bedded in Smile. Ran this morning in fife, and am now enjoying the bracing seaside at elie beach! All good.
Keep going babycham!!

NellVarnish · 15/10/2011 12:07

With the scarf obviously, and my slow cooker under my arm. Wink

babycham - what about a little nail art? Scroll down to Frankenstein & His Bride. Loads of ideas there!

Welll done Bafanga - lucky you at the seaside!

LinzerTorte · 15/10/2011 14:11

Love the Frankenstein nails, Nell - but fear I don't have a steady enough hand. Great bra too; in fact, the whole site looks interesting. I also liked the 18 things never to say in a conversation. I was asked last night whether I'd had botox. Shock

maybe I used to run round our local park, but one lap is only 1 km so I started to get a bit fed up with it. I now run on the streets and have worked out a route that's exactly 5 km, but am getting fed up with that now too so really need to find another one (which also needs to be exactly 5 km).

Am ridiculously snowed under with work up until our trip to London, so I fear I may not make it again out this month. The friends I went out with last night gave me a voucher for a sports shop as a belated birthday present; have just been browsing their online catalogue, but sadly it doesn't look like they have Garmins.

babycham42 · 15/10/2011 17:27

NellVarnish for Goodness sake don't encourage me!!!!!!(I actually had a job getting past the green glitter nails.Lush!!)

My DH is going to go out in car (I don't drive) and measure me a 5k route for when I get that far.I'm certain I won't be running at 5k in 30 mins so it'll be good to start working on times once I've got the distance.

Now there's positive thinking....

Good to hear you're OK Bafanga

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 15/10/2011 17:52

I have two basic routes, I live on the edge of a town so one route goes into town and around the streets and can be varied quite a bit, the other goes out to the next village, which more or less joins the town, but is a more rural, pretty route, thatched cottages etc. That route is only about 3k but skirts a playing field which is a 1k circuit so it is easy to add a couple of laps. I prefer this route but it is largely unlit so I can't use it in the evenings any more.

I've had a week off to get my back better, planning to go out on Monday and get going again. Rather worryingly I reallly haven't missed running at all. So if I don't report in with a run on Monday please come on here and administer a boot to my bum!

NellVarnish · 15/10/2011 18:49

Botox? Cheeky buggers. Tis just your natural beauty shining through Linzer. :) Found the bra on Pinterest, my latest addiction. Come and play! I've made persuaded Pistey to join. I sooooo wish I was as addicted to actually running as I am to talking about it and thinking about it. Blush

Glow in the dark! Mwahahahahahahaha babycham!

Glad your back's a bit better WhoKnows, take it easy though, you don't want to bugger it up again and have to sit on the sofa crocheting, eating Revels, drinking Wine and watching X-factor do you? Oh no. That would be horrible.

My usual route when I'm not slacking is short of 5k, but enough for me as I am barely moving. What I like about it is that it's out in the countryside and there's lots to distract me while I am puffing and panting away and very few white van men, although possibly the occasional axe murrrderrerr. The other route I do in our village is fraught with difficulties, including:

Neighbours
Schoolchildren
White Van Men
Smart Arses
Hills
Dog poo

Hope everyone is well and happy, and enjoying the sun's final fling. Just wanted to say a huge thank you to you all for being so kind to me this week, well you're kind all the time but you know what I mean. Thanks all round. And big unMNetty mwah mwah's.

babycham42 · 15/10/2011 19:17

Love the glow in the dark Nell!

Know what you mean re:white van man.I have already worked out that it is the definitive way to work out how good your sports bra is:

Purple flowery crop - 75% near crash rate
Grey and mauve crop - lots of heads turning
Nike crop - hardly a flicker.

My Monday main road run gets Nike.
Wednesday side roads gets grey and mauve.
Purple top is only for Friday country run if others aren't washed.......

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone Smile
