The Couch to 5k 2011 - Part 3 : Keep Holding My Hand So We Don’t get Separated!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/07/2011 23:07

Yet more space for us to talk about our progress on the Couch to 5K programme, the stuff we wear and the music we listen to! New runners are warmly welcomed - come and give it a whirl, you know you want to! There has been a lot of success on this thread, both in the UK and internationally, moral support is abundant, and there is always a kick up the arse for anyone who needs one!

If we stick together we will enjoy success, I thought song lyrics were appropriate so in the words of Gwen Stefani.. Grin

Run, running all the time
Running to the future
With you right by my side
Me, I'm the one you chose
Out of all the people
You wanted me the most

Running, running, as fast as we can
As fast as we can
Do you think you'll make it?
Do you think we'll make it?
We're running, keep holding my hand
It's so we don't get separated

Be, be the one I need
Be the one I trust most
Don't stop inspiring me...

Good luck everyone x

W1R3 tomorrow for me!

Hopefully it will cheer me up a bit - DP and I had a stupid, pointless, spiteful late-night row last night that ended up with him storming out at 11pm and going back to his place, so am feeling a bit mis this morning Sad I'm sure it'll blow over, but could do with some endorphins meanwhile.

vanimal · 19/08/2011 11:09

I am sure you'll feel better after your run. I hope you get it sorted soon.

LinzerTorte · 19/08/2011 11:11

Well done on your run, vanimal. I've been going out at 6 am since I've been back at my parents' and love how quiet it is at that time of day. I'll have to go back to 8 am runs once school starts, however; I have to get up at 5.45 am to get the DC to school (which starts at 8 am), and there's no way I'm getting up any earlier to fit in a run!

Manatee Sorry to hear about the row. I always feel better when I've been for a run - I find it helps to get things out of my system - so hope your run helps too.

BearGryllsBra · 19/08/2011 11:24

Oooooh lots of new runners to boss around - WELCOME!

Welcome tootired! Work in a nail bar? Heaven! I bet you've got a dressing table with nail varnishes of many hues lined up in rows - I've just painted mine and did a bit of fancy nancy stuff on them and they look fabulicious from a distance of about twenty feet. They are pink/black/white though, don't know what came over me, us being Team Purple and all.

Anyway back to the subject in hand. I believe this thread is called C25K, not NailVarnishObsessions. I'm about the same size as you. Lost weight to begin with but was doing No Carbs Before Marbs as well so I think that was more to do with the weight loss. I did tone up running though - no noticable shrinkage of norkage unfortunately. Then disaster struck and I got injured and I sought solace in cake and I'm back to square one. :(

Well done on starting and getting up early. I always feel so smug when I've been up early running and got some stuff done before the day officially starts.

at everyone. Got to go out now, but will be back in a bit to catch up with all your antics and waffle on some more.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/08/2011 11:42

Morning all,

Just got in from my run, that's 6 runs in 12 days, haven't managed that in ages, managed the full 30 mins too.

Can't stop, loads to do but just wanted to say to TooTired - I am mid early 40s, 3 stone overweight and size 16, and there's certainly no room in my bra for phones, keys etc (are you lot wearing crop tops BTW?). I started this in Jan and have been a bit off and on, haven't lost any weight, but haven't really tried to TBH until last week when I decided the reason my running had plateau'd was the 3 stone of lard I am carrying around. I have just started using the My Fitness Pal app for Iphone, it motivates me to run because you can factor in your exercise to get more calorie allowance. Aiming to lose the 3 stone in a year.

Anyway, talking of keys in bras (or not in my case, I just carry them in my hand) - I noticed today that my keyring is purple, that cheered me up. Just went and bought the MarieClaire with the free nail varnish too. Must go!

JelliBelli · 19/08/2011 18:17

Hello Oldies and Newies and well done all you early morning risers I was too late on MN last night to be bothered to get up this morning- needed some extra sleep to be good and sharp for work today. Anyway, I'm just home and off out for my run shortly.

I too am mid early 40s and am now longer overweight - hurrah!Grin I didn't lose many more cm but have lost half a stone ish since starting running 4 months ago. I am much more toned now. I also do some Jillian Michaels torture DVDs on my non running days. I am certain that helps.

Must go and get changed and run at a decent time for a change. I'll be back for more wibble chat later.

JelliBelli · 19/08/2011 21:52

Hi All, I am back.

I had an enjoyable (if a little boring) run on my own as DH is away for a few days. I did a few sprints during the run in an attempt to help increase my speed in the long run. I'll have to see how that works out. No wildlife tonight - just a few dog walkers to trundle scoot round.

As I walked back home for the last few minutes, I was amazed that little ol' me had just been for a 3.5 MILE run, just because it's Thursday, and I'm not overly pooped afterwards. I can't believe that following the programme has done that to me - the Queen of Exercise Aversion.

Keep it up ladies -we're all doing Good Things for ourselves!

JelliBelli · 19/08/2011 21:53

Oh yes - i realise now it's Friday! and I haven't had a Wine honestly! I just got a bit confused.......

BsshBossh · 19/08/2011 22:24

W1R1 tomorrow morning. Eeekkk! Posting about it here in advance in order to shame myself into doing it.

vanimal · 19/08/2011 22:29

BssshBosh, I have only done 2 runs, but it's great so far! Enjoy your run tomorrow, do it nice and early so you can't talk yourself out of it! Good luck :)

BsshBossh · 19/08/2011 22:31

Thanks! Yes, first thing tomorrow. Have I said "Eeeek" enough yet? :)

OTheHugeRaveningWolef · 19/08/2011 23:22

W1R3 tomorrow. My arse aches. Wish me luck!

Good luck BssshBossh - it's probably going to be nowhere near as bad as you think it's going to be Grin

PisteysInManhatten · 20/08/2011 03:30

Well I haven't run for so long, I fear my little legs will have forgotten how.....

BsshBossh · 20/08/2011 09:59

W1R1 completed. It wasn't as bad as I thought and I actually enjoyed it, though I was definitely huffing and puffing for the last few 1 minute runs Blush. Next outting is Tuesay morning.

OTheHugeRaveningWolef · 20/08/2011 14:08

Well done BsshBossh!

I did W1R3 this morning - just before the rain arrived. Feeling much better for some endorphins, even though it wasn't a great session (a bit achy in the arse area...).

And the stupid row with DP blew over as well: he admitted he WBVVVU and said sorry, so all is right with the world again Grin

sweatybutslightlysmug · 20/08/2011 14:13

Morning all! Welcome to new runners and hello to old timers!

RL has taken over a bit this week, what with meeting pistey, a busy week at work and my wretched dissertation, but my head is now back above water Grin

My last run was on Thursday night. It was super-humid, and I lived up to the sweaty bit of my name, but not the smug part. I could hardly put one leg in front of the other. I did my usual route in reverse, so fond some new hills I didn't know were there. 45 mins to do 3.36 miles (though there was a certain amount of hanging around waiting for lights to change - the alternative would have been to speed up and get through them as they were changing but that would have killed me Grin).

bear I'm coming home next week, sadly not near to your neck of the woods or I'd be round for a cuppa Grin. PM me though if you want me to bring you some OPI-licious colours back and I could post them to you?

New runners - sportsdirect.com is great for bargain running attire and under-cladding. I have some regular Nike crop-tops, but last time I went I got a reinforced one for high impact sports.

DSs are wanting attention so gotta go, see you later all!

BearGryllsBra · 20/08/2011 21:47

Have been strangely absent from my fave thread and have missed you all but visitors coming, house to clean, beds to change, food to cook. Runs to avoid ....

Well done to you runners who are just starting. Seeee? It was FUN! And you did it!

sweaty buggeration that you're not near me, and sooooo sweet of you to offer I might just take you up on that offer, but I don't want to put you to any bother. How long are you back for? Did you finish the dissertation? It's horrible running when it's humid, and even when it's humid here, it is nowhere near NYC standards, so I take my hat off to you. If I had one on that is.

Yoohoo Pistey wherever you are, your legs will remember, fear ye not. How's your carpet lungs?

to everyone else, have a good weekend one and all!

sweatybutslightlysmug · 20/08/2011 23:30

No running today, but blooming miles walked in converse and flip flops - am feeling very sore of foot.

BsshBossh and Wolef - well done on making a start on C25K. You will find it strangely addictive, rather like this thread Grin. And Wolef, glad your DP saw sense Smile

Whoknows - hats off to you for dong so many runs Grin

Jelli - Grin at you mixing up the days. Glad I am not the only one who does things like that.

Linzer - Shock at your early rising. Are you back home now? Has school started where you are? I think the kids here go back this week.

Bear - I will be home for a week, DH is staying on slightly longer. We have booked a holiday cottage in N Yorks, as DS2 has a 3 day rugby camp nearby. I'm hoping to get plenty of running in while we're away - just need to get through this week Grin.

PisteysInManhatten · 21/08/2011 00:58

Arrived in Boston... no one wanted to leave the beaches at Martha's Vineyard,we had gorgeous weather in the end, and everyone was dragging their heels somewhat. But......... there is a gym in this hotel. Will I get in there though? Time will tell.... Blush

Sweaty - I am going to run round that bloomin lake on Saturday morning even if it kills me! But I will have to take a cab to Central Park as by the time I've run/shuffled there I will have peaked!!

Bear - I'm really a bit Shock about your foray into pink/black/white!! I hope you've seen sense now.... I was going to offer to get you some OPI but Sweaty has beaten me to it! I really want to get you some Merry Midnight and send it to you... I think you need Grin You'll need to PM me though...!

Glad early days runs are going well BsshBossh / tootired/ vanilla / Wolef and Manatee

at Jelli forgetting the days - but I'm like that at the moment, I really have lost track!

And well done to Linzer for early runs. I am so not good at early mornings....! And WhoKnows - I am impressed by your dedication!!

Now have we decided when we are going to start shredding??!!!!!

sweatybutslightlysmug · 21/08/2011 04:36

get in that gym young lady so you are ready for the reservoir next weekend. I might have to nip up there tomorrow in your honour Smile, though the plan is either hiking or kayaking

As for Shred, wee-ll I am away until 5 Sept...

...and DH and I are having a romantic long weekend away towards the end of September to celebrate 15 years of mostly sometimes married bliss. I don't think I could take my shred DVD with me on that trip Grin. So either early Sept, and I'll miss a few days in the middle or the start of Oct Grin (I will have come up with a new excuse by then Grin)

However, DH keeps patting my (extensive) midriff and saying comforting things like "it will all be gone soon once you get going with your DVD", so perhaps we should start immediately

JelliBelli · 21/08/2011 14:26

Hi all,

A bit quiet on here today - I hope you're all having a fun weekend with your loved ones.

I've been out for my run (in PRSP now) and even though I was on my own it was fun, the sun was shining through the trees and it was warm, but not too warm, and had a gentle breeze. As it is Sunday (and it IS - I checked with DD!Wink) it was a long run so I went up the hilly but quiet road for 30 mins before turning back, but shortly afterwards on my way back, I passed a couple running up the hill - eeek! So I had to run a bit faster on the way back as I am apparently fairly competitive didn't want them to pass me, I had to speed up. They didn't pass me phew but I figured they went further down the road before turning as I turned back at a random location! Anyway I got back 4 minutes faster than I went out and had to run an extra loop!

Sweaty hats off to you running in humidity. I don't do well in that or heatit seems...

Pistey enjoy Boston - we had a fun weekend there years ago. We found a large Borders bookshop and it was the first time both the DCs could enjoy a bookshop. It was such a treat being able to browse books again after having wingeing, small dcs wanting to leave for the previous few years. I have fond memories of spending a raining afternoon there browsing and of course drinking copious amounts of coffee.

Sweaty does DH have a taut midriff himself? Otherwise there's nothing to stop him joining you.....

New shredders while you're planning your Shred have you thought how often to do it and what you'll be doing running wise to maintain the good work you've done already?

Have good Sunday everyone

sweatybutslightlysmug · 21/08/2011 15:35

Jelli - DH is going to join the shred. We haven't decided whether we'll do it together or separately. For work reasons we've spent some of the last 2 or 3 years living apart, and he took up running and cycling again and is far fitter. We both fell into the trap of eating US stylee when we got here, and gained weight which is now coming off more slowly than it went on Grin

What's your advice about combining shredding and running? It will start to cool down here soon, so I will be running more regularly.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/08/2011 16:58

Greetings from Scotland, arrived yesterday, with running gear including lucky purple hairband, planning my next run for tomorrow. As for the Shred, I would liketo start on Tues 6th, which is the DCs first day back at school. My normal running days tend to be Mon, Wed and Fri, so shred on Tue, Thur and Sat would suit me, what are the rest of you thinking?

I'm feeling extra motivated since arriving here, at home I never see myself in a swimsuit as there are no mirrors at the local pool, here the hotel pool has full length mirrors everywhere you turn in the changing rooms, the sight of all my wobbly bits has made me think toning is definitely needed.

JelliBelli · 21/08/2011 19:38

We fell into the US eating stylee too when we lived there (WA) Grin. It goes on sooooooo easily but shifting it again is a whole new game!

Shredding/running? It's a tough call. I think I made swift progress on the shredding partly because I did do it each day, but having worked my way through C25K I definitely would NOT want to lose the hard work and stamina. Assuming I was maintaining my running (not improving) I think I would run either 2 or 3 times per week and Shred on ALL of the non running days.

In an ideal world I might do the first 4 days of Shred with no running (shhhhhh! you ARE going to ache those days) and then shred every day and also run later earlier in the day on 3 days a week after that. BUT obviously that takes time and energy which people may not have......

BsshBossh · 21/08/2011 20:39

Oh goodness, I'm incredibly stiff and sore from the W1R1 yesterday. I am grateful my next run is not until Tuesday. I did all the cool down plus stretching. Did any of you feel so sore after this first run and will it get better? Do you still go out and run even if your muscles feel stiff and sore?
