Any Couch25K new starters?

I got abit fitter a while back (had a trainer), he moved away and I kept it up and jumped in at about week 4 or 5, but that was months ago now Blush I really need to get fit for a job and lose at least 1 stone (ideally about 4!) Anyone want to start with me? Or are all the newbies jumping straight onto the massive thread? :)

Any good apps that any1 recommends??

UmBongo · 23/06/2011 13:23

Hi I am still carrying about 2st of "baby weight" but my "baby" starts school in september so its about time it left!

I have done week one once, tuesday night, can't go out tonight as other commitments and am planning to do run 2 tomorrow. I hope it stops raining by then!

Has anyone else got sore shins? Don't think its water retention Duende but I hope it stops by tomorrow night! (I am not one for the 6am rising!)

UmBongo · 25/06/2011 17:54

Oh look, I killed the thread! Have done 2nd run last night, it felt easier than run 1 already!

iEmbarassedMyself · 25/06/2011 17:57

Ooh, didn't realise there was a MN C25K thread!
I'm supposed to be doing W2D3 today, but have had a bit of back ache and cramps so will be doing it tomorrow instead.
Hope everyone has had a good week. :)

duende · 26/06/2011 15:28

I ended up with horrible shin splints and knee pain after 2nd run in week 4. (last Wednesday) So i've had to stop :( I am a bit better today so hopefully will be able to run again in a couple of days. I went out on my bike last night and will do tonight. I think my legs need strenghtening.
How is everyone doing?

UmBongo · 26/06/2011 17:45

Oo, sounds painful Duende! I'm pleased you can still go out on your bike, I enjoy cycling but thought I would try running as I feel I can get a work-out in half the time it takes for a bike ride! Still cycling though!

I am due for run 3 wk 1 tonight, run 2 felt easier than run 1 so will see what tonight brings! I lost 3lb this week too so am feeling very Smile

cuddlysmurf · 27/06/2011 19:07

LOL at umbongos threadkiller comment, I thought everyone had gone about this time last week - seems its quiet on this one at the weekend ;) I'm also carrying a few extra stubborn kilos that have been off and on and off again since the almost 3 year old baby was born. Time for them to leave permanently!

duende sorry to hear you have shinsplints - they are really sore . . .

did W2R2 today, only a few days late Hmm as the weekend just got in the way - anybody else finding that they get really sore legs for a few seconds when slowing from jog back to walk? Mine were really achey this morning, but I put it down to not having done anything since middle of last week.

Hope you all do well over the next couple of days . . . . off now to put DS in the bath and then to bed (DH is off out how dare he as bathing is his job and has left me to get on with it!).

pinktransit · 28/06/2011 17:06

W4R2 for me later this evening. Home from work, cup of tea, get changed and then go. I was really pleased at doing 5 mins on Sunday - I can't believe that I actually managed it! :)

UmBongo · 28/06/2011 22:17

W2R1 Tick!

I'm only a bit behind you Smurf! Although I am away this weekend and can't run thursday either so not sure when w2r2 is going to happen!

cuddlysmurf · 29/06/2011 16:18

The Smurf has finished Week 2 on a high!

Reason 1 - I did a 5 minute run at the end of my session today (as I was so engrossed in my book that I tuned out the GetRunning lady who tells me what to do).

Reason 2 - Stepping on the scales shows that there is 2 kilos less of Smurf than there used to be

I may not be able to move tomorrow, as I'm a bit achey in the legs right now after running this morning then sitting on my tush working at my desk all day. . . .

Hope you are all still here!

UmBongo · 30/06/2011 22:49

Week 2 run 2 finished at 10.40 this evening!!!!!

Not quite up to your 5 minutes smurf, but I did manage 2 minutes at the end! Will try harder after the next one!

cuddlysmurf · 01/07/2011 19:22

inaweofumbongosmurf wow - 10.40pm I would have been up on a post run high for abour 4 hours after that!

Plan to go out in the morning to keep on schedule (95 days till the 10K and my race number arrived yesterday) - but a large gin and tonic may turn into more than one and scupper plans for an early outing.

duende · 01/07/2011 21:29

I have had to stop :( first I had to take a week off for my shins to heal. I did week 4 run 3 on Wednesday and went out again today but had to stop 2/3 of the way in. My knees were absolutely killing me and I struggled to walk back home. This is really getting me down now as I was enjoying running and cycling and feeling much better for it. I have an appointment with a physio tomorrow and I'm hoping they will tell me what to do so that I can continue to run.

umbongo, pinktransit, cuddlysmurf, well done all, great to read about your progress!

cuddlysmurf · 02/07/2011 13:16

duende thats a bugger (scuse the language) - hope you get a good physio that can help you get "up and running" again soon . . . . are you still managing the bike?

cuddlysmurf · 03/07/2011 21:20

W3R1 check Wink

Jogging in the sunshine was fab - made it pass really quickly.

Shame I got home to a tantrum fuelled toddler and exasperated husband. Naughty step for both ....

duende · 03/07/2011 21:59

Smurf, well done to you! I am jealous of your running.
I know what you mean about the tantrum fuelled toddler though, DS is 23 months old knows a thing or two about them!

I am managing the bike OK and it's also enjoyable, but you need more time for it and I am missing the post-run high. The physio wasn't really sure what my problem was, she seemed to think it could be muscle imbalance or tightness of some muscles on the inside of my thighs...she suggested some stretching excersices but she did not really fill me with confidence. I will do the stretching for a while, then try running again. If it turns out I still can't, I'll go back to my GP and ask for a referral to physio.

cuddlysmurf · 05/07/2011 13:36

Thanks duende - have you thought about yoga/pilates or something similar?? DH did a half-marathon a couple of years ago and on the "in-between" days when he was at the really early stages of training he nicked my used the Yoga for Dummies DVD - he got awful cramps in his calves if he ran without using it regularly for that few weeks and also used deep stretches before running. Just a suggestion Wink

Gonna go for W3R2 tonight as DS was not participating in my cunning and dastardly plan of getting up early this morning.

duende · 05/07/2011 21:43

Hi Smurf! Yes, GP and physio both recommended pilates. I don't have any DVDs but have recorded a few things off the body in balance channel and did some yoga and pilates yesterday.
Hope you enjoy/ have enjoyed your run.

UmBongo · 05/07/2011 21:50

Finished wk2 yesterday so just off to download wk3 for tomorrow! The reason for the middle of the night run was that we were away for the weekend and I couldn't run again until last night, so I knew I had to squeeze a run in when I got home on thursday! I really don't think I could do first thing in the morning - do you have breakfast first?

Duende sorry to hear your problems, the reason I started this running thing was cos I could get a good workout in less time than it takes on the bike, although cycling is great and I enjoy it.

I have been doing pilates for nearly a year and my muscle strength has improved - I now have stomach muscles for the first time in my life, even if they are still hiding under a big wobbly bit!

duende · 05/07/2011 22:03

umbongo, do you go to a pilates class or do you use a dvd? if the latter, can you recommend one?

when I go out in the morning, I don't eat anything before I go. I get dressed, brush my teeth, have a sip of water and leave before I wake up fully so that I don't get a chance to change my mind!
I'm far too tired from work lazy in the evening.

I'm going to attempt running tomorrow morning, if my knees don't cooperate, I'll book an appointment with a sports physio someone at work recommended.

cuddlysmurf · 06/07/2011 20:54

Confused so yesterday's planned run happened about half an hour ago..... still it's done now. Roll on Friday.

drivingmisscrazy · 06/07/2011 20:56

just to say you are all great - and what you refer to as the 'big thread' - I assume you mean Runners United? - really isn't that scary at all. everyone is very nice - I run, I am very slow, some of them are very fast, but they are supportive and help me stay motivated. Come on over when you feel ready!

UmBongo · 06/07/2011 21:07

I go to a local pilates class, it is quite good and she varies the routine a bit so it makes it more interesting, and can tell you if you are doing it right. It is quite expensive at £5 per week though, I may get a dvd over the summer break.

I have just done week 3 run 1 tonight - and worked out that it was the same amount of running as last week, so I added another 2 min and a 1 min run on to the end, so I have run a total of 12 minutes tonight - WORLD RECORD (or more accurately personal best!) Quietly chuffed with myself! When she said imagine you are running next to a hedge, I was!

How did you get on Duende this morning? Or are you too sore to get to the computer this evening!

duende · 06/07/2011 22:03

Hello ladies! I am very happy this evening - all endorphined up! I went out a couple of hours ago and took it easy. Instead of doing W5R1, I did W3D1. My breathing was so much better than it was just a couple of weeks ago and my legs felt nowhere near as heavy as they used to. So I added a 10 minute voluntary excess Wink at the end! this is the longest I have ever run and it felt fine. My left knee is perfectly fine, my right one hurts now but definitely not as bad as last Friday.
I will carry on with the pilates/ stretching on the non-running days and see how I go.

cuddlysmurf · 08/07/2011 16:23

drivingmisscrazy thanks for the invite, and the vote of confidence, but I'm still a bit afraid of big threads Grin I'm sure I will wander on over at some stage for a good old lurk though!

Way to go duendorphin I'm so excited that you are "back with a vengance" and being sensible - well other than your voluntary excess, of which I am really jealous.

umbongo congratulations and you are quite right to be quietly chuffed, rather than heaving and puffed!

I'm done with Week 3, as of 11.39 this morning I'm officially on to Week 4, which will properly start on Sunday when I get out for next time. I did a VE on my last run too, taking the 3 mins to 6.5 - looking forward to posting my first 10 min run in a couple of weeks.

Really loving the podrunner music and have found my mojo with 142 beats per minute (but that was maybe just today!)
