a thread for runners to chat, debate, share tips, triumphs (and the occasional disaster!) - new runners particularly welcome, the only thing that's required is enthusiasm (and a pair of running shoes)

DrNo have sponsored you but Just Giving was being a bit awkward and wouldn't change my name to Badger and just to confuse you, the donation is in my married name (and my fb is in my maiden name!)
Am really hoping the rain clears so I enjoy my run this evening.
moshi Hope all went well today and your mum is ok.

Themasterandmargaritas · 07/06/2011 16:58

I hope today went as well as it could do Moshi.

Sorry will catch up with you all others later, looking forward to a bit of bonking. Grin I ran out of internet credit and we were away with the elephants.

I am panicking as my cold deteriorated into a very bad chesty thing so I haven't run since last Wednesday. Will I be alright for the 24th?

backwardpossom · 07/06/2011 17:31

whispers What's bonking, apart from what I know it as...?

DebiTheScot · 07/06/2011 18:07

I sniggered at bonking too (well I don't actually snigger at bonking, that'd be weird Grin but you know what I mean)
I was going to go for an at least 4.5 mile run tonight but I appear to be at my neighbours house with a glass of wine in my hand!
How sad am I checking up on mn at her house!

DrNortherner · 07/06/2011 18:34

YeahThatsTheBadger thanks so much, very kind of you. Thanks to all of you who have sponsored me.

My confidence has been restored. Just got back from a 5 mile run and here are my splits:
00:09:53 1.00 09:53
2 00:08:31 1.00 08:31
3 00:08:51 1.00 08:51
4 00:08:36 1.00 08:36
5 00:07:45 1.00 07:45

1st mile was warming up, then 4 miles all under 9m/m - I have never ran like that before Grin There was me thinking I was sluggish but my legs think not. I know some of you are super speedy but I am delighted with that Smile

drivingmisscrazy · 07/06/2011 18:40

DrNo great stuff - your warm-up pace is about my normal running pace Blush; all that running club and BMF work has clearly paid off

with splits like that you will run under 2!

OP posts:
EmmaBemma · 07/06/2011 18:58

wow DrNortherner! I am in awe. Go go gadget legs.

TheChewyToffeeMum · 07/06/2011 19:38

Yeah driving. DrNo's final split looks like a sprint to me!

My knees are aching again today after 6 miles running around one of our lovely country parks last night - it was perfect running weather. Knees felt fine while I was running but nearly had to take a painkiller to get to sleep last night. I think it was the hills on my Saturday 9-miler that did it. Am going to avoid hills for a while. Does anyone do any specific knee strengthening exercises? I think I probably need to do wall squats or something equally unpleasant.

I am assuming that "bonking" is some weirdy-cycling term for hitting the wall.

I forgot where you were Master and read "away with the elephants" to be like "awa' wi the faeries".

Yes, DrNo can I get the details, too please?

Did a 4.5km trail run at running club tonight and really pushed myself. It was brilliant. Very hilly, so my pace averaged 9:00 min/mile - ish. But when I was going faster, I was doing 7:00 min/miles! Obviously didn't manage to keep at that pace for long distances (and that was when downhill) but I'm chuffed. :)

drivingmisscrazy · 07/06/2011 21:42

woohoo! - some great times!

Some pre race PR I got for the newbies

Some great times on here guys. We are doing well! DRiving you really must stop putting yourself down!

MoshiMoshi · 07/06/2011 22:18

Am back after a long day starting with leaving the house just before 6am to drive to hospital for a 7am start. Operation went according to plan and mum is recovering and stable. She looked so frail and was in so much pain I felt more upset seeing her after the operation than while I was waiting. She'll be in for at least a week now. Thanks for your support everyone. You lot are simply marvellous. And yes, bonking is the cyclists' phrase for hitting the wall (ie running out of glycogen stores when out training) and sounds much more fun than hitting the wall doesn't it? I think cyclists generally are a bit more oo-er about things. DH has a new bike which is called Il Pompino. Google it in Italian if you don't know what it means. It even has a splat logo next to the name on the top tube of the bike. What on earth is that all about then?! Grin

MoshiMoshi · 07/06/2011 22:20

Pleased to see DrNo gaining in confidence as the weekend approaches! How are futurity and Dillinger doing this week?

I have A Lurgy so am taking it easy so I can contemplate my marathon schedule. Bad timing but better now than later.

futurity · 07/06/2011 22:34

Good to hear today went well Moshi

OMG I am so slow compared to you DrNo! I can run your first mile pace an that's about it! Aiming for a plodding 10.30min mile pace on Sunday (if I am lucky!). Wish I was speedier!

drivingmisscrazy · 07/06/2011 22:37

futurity - it's OK, you've me for company down the back...you'll do fine. I wish I was speedier too, but I'm not and that's that. But I'm working on it.

Moshi it sounds like things went well - glad to hear it

OP posts:
DebiTheScot · 07/06/2011 23:13

I may I just committed myself to a marathon relay! On Sunday! As I'm not very sober I'm not entirely sure what this involves!

YeahThatsTheBadger · 07/06/2011 23:20

Moshi pleased it all went well today.

I done my 5k this evening. Non-stop in 31.5 mins! I am very proud of myself. Smile I sprinted the last 400metres as I so desperately wanted to get round in 30mins. It really didn't take it out of me either. Which means I need to push myself a bit more. Think that pacing is going to be part of my problem-I'm naturally a sprinter and can't pace myself. Will have to work on that!

DrNo glad you're feeling more positive about the weekend.
driving you really shouldn't be so down on yourself. You put in so many miles every week. I am in awe of you. And the rest of you. Grin

Good night all!

backwardpossom · 07/06/2011 23:21

Well done Badger :)

EmmaBemma · 08/06/2011 07:34

Well done Badger! And backwardspossum - that's a fantastic pace, especially for off-roading. I do my longer weekly run on forest trails and I alway feel much slower, the ground seems to absorb a lot of energy, plus balancing etc.

Dithered and dithered and eventually bought a garmin off amazon last night. I'm all impatient for it to arrive now, though not so impatient to discover exactly how much of a slowcoach I am. It was DrNo's lap breakdown that did it, I'd love to see exactly what my pace was over a whole run like that.

DrNortherner · 08/06/2011 07:36

Badger well done! That's a great time too.

Moshi so glad it went well. Must be terrible to see your Mum upset and in pain, but, the worst is over now and she can recover. Is your sister nearby to help you out?

Re my splits, my long runs do not read like that so I am not expecting 13 miles of 8.5m/m on Sunday btw.......for some reason my running speed is a little inconsistent. My base speed is there, so I can develop it, but I ma not always that speed.

futurity how you feeling now?

EmmaBemma · 08/06/2011 07:37

oh, and rest day today... which is just as well, as both daughters ended up in our bed last night. Lots of cuddles, but not much sleep.

DrNortherner · 08/06/2011 07:38

EmmaBemma to get the mile split info you have to set the lap function up before you run, then it beeps after each mile. You will be addicted soon Grin

backwardpossom · 08/06/2011 09:08

I'm going to try and work out how to change it to km splits for the weekend as I'm doing a 5k race and am hoping for a PB (currently 25:37 - but that was measured with a Nike + thing and I don't think that's particularly accurate) but the course is slightly longer than 5k, so want the Garmin to confirm!

Moshi hope your mum has a speedy recovery x

bonkers20 · 08/06/2011 09:11

Well done Badger!
