a thread for runners to chat, debate, share tips, triumphs (and the occasional disaster!) - new runners particularly welcome, the only thing that's required is enthusiasm (and a pair of running shoes)

Moshi all the best tomorrow - will be thinking of you

Badger 'wheesht'?? are you Irish? we have 'giving out' in this house, but not 'bold' (for naughty). But DD does say 'we did that the last day' as in 'before' or 'last time'...and 'sorry' as an imperative rather than an apology ('get out my way' is 'sorry mummy')

OP posts:
YeahThatsTheBadger · 06/06/2011 23:02

Driving no, I was born in Luton but the folks are from Donegal. We don't have 'bold' either but we do have the same for use for 'sorry' - it really confuses the inlaws (they're English). Can't think of any other Irish-isms. I say hot press instead of airing cupboard but think that's probably a Donegal-ism!

peachsmuggler · 06/06/2011 23:21

Didn't realise "wheesht" was Irish too! We all say that in our house.

Sending lots of love to Moshi and your mum and family for tomorrow.

Now wheesht you lot, it's bedtime! Wink

squix · 06/06/2011 23:26

Moshi - thinking of you and your family tomorrow. I hope everything goes well.

drno - thinking of you too, it sounds as though your dad was lovely, can't add anything to the wise words already given on here. I am sure Ernie doesn't mind at all.

drivingmisscrazy · 07/06/2011 08:25

badger no, press for cupboard is not just Donegal...

OP posts:
backwardpossom · 07/06/2011 08:58

I say "haud yer wheesht" so it's definitely not just Irish! :) And my wee granny in Cupar had a press. I wish I had a press, it was brilliant.

futurity · 07/06/2011 10:01

just did a plodding tapering style 4 miles throughout which I was plagued with thoughts of "this is so hard...how will I ever run 13 miles...I'm doooooomed!". Amazing how 12 weeks of training goes out the window when confronted by a week of tapering!

ibbydibby · 07/06/2011 10:07

Moshi, hope all goes well today.

Dr No can't think of anything helpful to add to what others have said, though thinking of you also. Actually having typed that just had a huge sigh - ny dad was a massive fan of the London Marathon right from the start, he loved the way the winners of the very first event joined hands as they crossed the finish line. Wish he knew that I had run the London Marathon (he died in 1989)

Will be disappearing for a few days as RL takes over - combination of too much work, and school fete on Saturday, (heaviliy involved in that). No running either for a few days, though have stacked up more miles than usual in last few days (5 miles Thurs, 5k Sat, 10 miles Sun and 4 miles yesterday). Way over my norm!

notyummy · 07/06/2011 10:28

Hope today goes ok for you and your Mum Moshi. I found your comments on fuelling really interesting as I have felt ok up to 13 miles without at the moment, but I can now see the wider picture.

Drn - I am so sorry about your loss and I am sure it is quite normal for these things to hit people at various times in their life.

Not an awful lot of running to report here because of lots of half term travelling. For the large scottish contingent, I grew up in Scotland and although I am exiled in Lincolnshire at the moment, I visit up north as much as I can. My 'scottish tour' this time had a 'seaside' them, including Carnostie, Portobello and Helensburgh! We had good weather a proper beach day and some Highland games. I did fit in two runs as well as some pilates. One along the Forth and Clyde Canal, and one killer hill run (probably no more than 4 miles) from the seafront in Helensburgh right up to the top of the hill.

I also did a short 3 1/2 miles yesterday morning at 6 am when my mothers help arrived before dashing off to work. Better than nothing, but I am looking forward to Thursday/Friday when I should be able to get out for longer.

cestlavie · 07/06/2011 11:53

Hi Moshi, best of luck for your mum today. Tried (and failed) to suppress a juvenile smirk at the problem of bonking when running - think bonking meant something somewhat different where I grew up! I tend to just rely on Lucozade Sport on longer runs although often have a banana or two shortly before I set out.

Sorry to hear you're feeling shit for lots of reasons during the taper DrNo. Idea of the bench is lovely though. I'm due to start tapering in a couple of weeks for my HM (though frankly, given recent amounts of training, not quite sure what I'm tapering down from...) - I think you can still get out and run a lot more on an HM taper than a full marathon taper without having the same impact on race day performance. Just shorter distances more easily. The RW taper for the final week for the 1 hr 25 min - 1 hr 50 min band has a an easy 6 - 7 miler in it.

EmmaBemma · 07/06/2011 11:58

Hello Moshi, good luck to you and your mum for her operation today.

I went out for a short 4 and a bit miles this morning, according to gmaps. Two hilly bits. Tried to get a bit of a nash on generally (I will get my head around some sort of interval training), and then worked out my pace when I got back - it was just under 9 minutes per mile. So basically to achieve my 2 hour half goal, all I need to do is maintain that for another 9 miles! c'est simple. [whimper] I feel a long way off half marathon standard but at least I've got lots of time.

Your Scottish tour sounds fun, notyummy. You must have done a fair bit of travelling.

sfxmum · 07/06/2011 12:15

quick post for moshi thinking of you and your family, hope all goes to plan

June2009 · 07/06/2011 13:00

thinking of you moshi
this month's women's running has half marathons training plans in it.
What does RW stand for in RW taper?

had my new trainer yesterday morning and told him about the HM, he didn't recoil in horror which is a good sign. (I always worry that I think that I'm fitter than I am iyswim).
Someone asked how fit we are? this trainer told me "my gosh you're fit" which made me laugh (was on the cross trainer at the time). I don't think you can really measure it? Different people will be good at different things I think.

right, dd is up and calling for me! lunch time!

pawsnclaws · 07/06/2011 13:38

All the best for today Moshi, I hope all goes well. Your mum is in the best possible hands.

I'm with cestlavie on bonking, sorry but definitely a smirksome word. Maybe it's an age thing?! As for bumbags, I can definitely corroborate what Herecomes says about the use of the word "fanny" in the US - let's just say I once had a very very embarrassed American client who had misunderstood why her UK colleagues fell about laughing every time she referred to being "patted on the fanny." I had to set the poor girl straight .....

DrNo you'll be fine on the day - I felt massive emotional turmoil before the marathon because it mattered so much, I was doing it all for a reason and for a good cause. Then waiting to start I felt so calm, it was great. Definitely one of the hazards of tapering - too much time to think.

Not much running for me at the moment, I'm suffering again with hip pain. I started doing some yoga and have realised I have no hip flexibility at all. I managed a slow 4 miles today at the gym but was a bit uncomfortable.

I've also started a diet - boohoo. I have 2.5 stone to lose to get to where I was before I had ds3. Hate dieting .... all I can think about is food! I definitely made major mistakes on the whole running/nutrition thing when doing the marathon. Something to remember for next time.

drivingmisscrazy · 07/06/2011 13:55

RW - Runner's World - they have a series of custom schedules - and ones that you can download to your Garmin. I always end up fiddling about with them - although as it is clear that my 5+ months of training have had absolutely zero impact on my running ability :( I am not the person to ask.

paws sorry about the hip - I suspect I am not at all flexible either and this can have knock-on effects...sorry about diet - i hate diets too, but actually think I should try and shed a few lbs which means fewer jelly babies eliminating all the fun stuff

OP posts:
Wheelybug · 07/06/2011 14:04

sciencebint - I did mean cheesy as in corny but then if you'd smelt my trainers after my gym session today, you'd wonder. Thankfully a new pair are awaiting me at the PO I think (even though only ordered yesterday).

moshi - hope today is going ok, DrNo I hope you're feeling a bit better and futurity I hope your taper is going ok - you'll be fine !

Paws thumbs down for the diet. I had a week off being careful last week as down at my parents and coping with lots of kids so had to drink wine... and eat scones ... and the odd ice cream. Thankfully I ran more than normal so it didn't have too disasterous effect. However, back on schedule...

So I managed 10K in the gym today - not an amazing disance but I struggle to mentally get passed 5 miles because I get bored. But, I am finding doing speed intervals really helps. Today I did a 2K warm up, followed by 4 1K intervals at 12KPH with 500m recovery of 9.5 KPH and a 2K warm down. I have to say though it was quite manageable so not sure if I should increase the speed of the intervals, increase the distance of the intervals or reduce the recovery. I like the regularity of the distances though - its easy to keep up with (clearly been at home too long - can't cope with complicated thought).

I too think of bonking as something v. different.

Wheelybug · 07/06/2011 14:04

oh and talking of not being able to cope with complicated thought - I realised today that it would be pointless getting a GPS garmin at the moment given I do more of my runs on a treadmill than out and about. Doh.

sfxmum · 07/06/2011 14:10

I have promised myself I will draw up a sensible training plan and a sensible 'diet' to loose a couple of stone and still be able to train, my doctor keeps extolling the virtues of low carbing, for syndrome X and PCOS diagnosis, I am feeling slightly confused

sfxmum · 07/06/2011 14:11

I meant post exam, I am yet to be able to revise and make sensible choices

drivingmisscrazy · 07/06/2011 14:11

presumably wearing a Garmin on a treadmill would record 0 distance?

I have found to my utter disgust that the GPS generally wipes about 0.5km off most of my runs, so I am even slower than I thought...the truth, it hurts!

OP posts:
pawsnclaws · 07/06/2011 14:25

sfx unfortunately I realised in my student days that your brain needs biscuits - whole packets obviously Grin. I'm afraid I've never been able to have one or two - always a case of "step away from that packet before someone gets hurt."

Wheelybug · 07/06/2011 14:32

Yes that's what I assume driving - hence why my trusty footpodded garmin works better for me now. Mind you, come september..... Although I am thinking I might keep 1 session in the gym until my membership runs out at christmas just to do speed intervals as its much easier on a treadmill than out and about.

SFX - of course you can't diet whilst studying. Not possible.. or advisable I dare say Wink.

DrNortherner · 07/06/2011 14:51

Hi guys. This thread just keeps getting funnier! Bonking?! Yes, I am with the dirty minded crew too......!

Moshi hope all is going well with your Mum. Thinking of you.

I and oing a 5 miler this evening, though have eaten a truck load of Celebrations today, and have a head ache and feel sluggish......not good! I work in a glass pyramid with no opening windows and crap air con. As one woman here think it is positvely baltic with the air con on we have to have it off and it is so stuffy.....grr.

My race pack was returned to sender as there was a problem with my address Hmm not sure how dh got his then.....so I have to collect it form the late reg building on the day.
