Hello all - thread moving v. fast again. Driving great to hear your news, a weight off your mind.

My jaw is dropping at NotYummy's times. I am sure you could do some amazing times with some more structured training. FWIW I carry a bottle of water and sweeties (Mentos are my sweetie of choice) in a waist pack if I am running 6 miles or more. I sip the water everytime my mouth feels dry (I cannot get the hang of breathing in through my nose Blush). I tend to have 1 mentos every mile from about 4 miles onwards. I am thinking that I probably need to try something with more electrolytes for the hot weather [hopeful emoticon].

Did a really enjoyable 3 miles in the drizzle last night - just let my mind wander and jogged along at an easy pace (11.13 min/miles). Today I am planning to do 10 miles somewhere flat as I am fed up of hills.

I won't join you guys on Facebook as I am rarely on there. Mumsnet swallows enough time without me getting sucked into FB too.

drivingmisscrazy · 28/05/2011 09:35

badger i am dubhroisin on fb...obviously this is not my real name!! backward - I'm not sure whether I've got you or not...I can't get my head around your real names!

OP posts:
backwardpossom · 28/05/2011 10:09

Yeah we're friends on there - I'm the one with the white cap and purple running vest on in my profile pic - initials DM x

drivingmisscrazy · 28/05/2011 10:27

see, can't keep up with everyone's names!! you're scottish, I remember now...I am going out for an amble (not long enough to justify sweets!) this afternoon, and back into structured training next week - am excited about this now, especially with my Garmin on its way. Did I mention that I'd bought a Garmin? :o

backwardpossom · 28/05/2011 10:54

Did a slow 5 miles this morning - had planned a bit further, but my legs were so tired so I cut the run short. I probably should have rested a bit after the half... Am just entering the Baxter's Loch Ness 10k (considered the marathon for all of 2 mins before deciding not to be so daft, and there's not a half marathon, unfortunately!) - it's in October and I've decided that is the one I'm going to do my first sub-50 min 10k. Yes.

There's also a pre-school 'race' on the day in the park in Inverness - it's a circuit of the park and is about 400 metres. Going to enter DS into it - he'll be 2 yrs and 2 months on the day and I know he'll love it :)

TheChewyToffeeMum · 28/05/2011 11:47

backward there is an article in this months Womens Running Mag about races with good PB potential and that race is mentioned so a good chance of sub-50 I should think.

I think I will aim for a 10K after my half as my 10K PB is 7 years old (64 mins). I really should be able to get under 60 mins as my 5K PB is 27 mins 40.

backwardpossom · 28/05/2011 11:53

Yeah, I got that Chewy - it's quite a good magazine, I subscribed to it :) The Loch Ness 10k is a fairly flat course, so with a bit of training... I'll have to knock 6 mins off my current PB, though!

You should manage under an hour if you're doing around 27 mins in a 5k - I remember when I got under 1 hour for the first time, I was so chuffed! :)

Themasterandmargaritas · 28/05/2011 12:00

Totally and completely Confused about FB. Driving I think I am about to befriend you, so don't be scared of the large than life African lady, it's just me.

I did 19k this morning in 1:49, hills and heat together but so sweet to be waved at by tiny children and cheered on by the locals, often who run beside you for part of the way. Smile

I had crap jelly babies. They are fakes. Someone needs to send me some real jelly babies, it's affecting my performance.

Can we do some post long run recovery tips please? I feel quite exhausted.

Did someone mention a new Garmin? Envy

futurity · 28/05/2011 12:11

Post long run I have a mars recovery drink which is yummy (2 for £1 in tescos at the moment). I also do my stretches and am very anal about doing them all as it does help me feel less achy. I then have a bath (which I known is wrong as should be cold really) but I love my baths and I just make sure it isn't too hot.

No run for me this morning ..legs are tired so I figure give the a rest before final long run on Monday.

DrNortherner · 28/05/2011 12:18

Hi all Smile

I just ran the furthers I have run EVER. I did 11.11 miles in 1.45 and this included some unpleasant hills. My half marathon is a flat course so I am getting more and more secretly hopeful for a sub 2 hour but daren't say this out loud yet you understand? Grin I felt a little anxious about running alone but actually it was bliss. I loved it. I seem to relax more when running alone. I enjoyed every mile!

Have to say, are any of you spitters when you run? My mouth gets so moist (hate that word!) I have to spit every now and then. So lady like me.......I do try to do it when no one can see me, not just as I am passing a pack of ramblers Grin

sfxmum · 28/05/2011 12:20

hello slept till late got up went running 4 slow miles but fell so much better now
Our GOSH family fun run is in 2 weeks, dd is very excited bless her but I guess it is a good start even if she can't run the 3miles just yet

I like that WR mag particularly the thing about bingo wings never mind the speed, flappy bits are becoming an issueGrin

backwardpossom · 28/05/2011 12:44

Great run DrNo you're very fast! :)

The family fun run sounds like a right laugh, sfx, what a great idea. I wish my family were more into running. They all think I'm mental!

MrsWednesday · 28/05/2011 13:28

Sounds like a heavenly run DrNo, when it all feels so easy you just fly. And very fast too!

Master, I have a big bowl of nutty muesli after a run, a couple of big glasses of water, stretches then (if it's been a really long one) a cold bath then a hot shower.

Hadn't heard of Womens Running, might add that to my list of reading materials - I already have a subscription to Runners World.

Backward, my family all think I'm mental too...

Notyummy, you are incredibly quick!

Had a good stretch at pilates today so I'm feeling raring to run tomorrow - planning a short and easy one to get back into my running groove again.

drivingmisscrazy · 28/05/2011 13:53

everyone in my family thinks I am nuts too; DP is totally unable to understand the appeal of running: she did some of couch to 5k and hated it; HATED it

OP posts:
backwardpossom · 28/05/2011 14:08

My DH hates running. He says "it's bad enough running DS's bath" Hmm

sfxmum · 28/05/2011 14:14

backwardpossom it seems to be a basic language problem there Wink

sfxmum · 28/05/2011 14:16

drN nobody understands why I hate that word too moist yuck
but no I have the opposite problem if anything

your run sounds lovely, I am not that found of running with people although I concede, it does sometimes make me go faster

DrNortherner · 28/05/2011 14:20

Ah, see my dh is a runner too so I don't feel so bad nipping out to run, as he does it too. Not sure how I'd manage if he hated it. He is much faster than me, but, my endurance seems to be better as I fare better on longer runs than him. He enjoys 10k as a distance. He is also a cyclist, which I am not, so hats off to all you triathletes. Have tried a rod bike and I just don't like the feel.

drivingmisscrazy · 28/05/2011 14:43

drNo - I'm not surprised you didn't like your rod bike - sounds very painful indeed lol

moist is an icky word; I never spit as a general rule (for some reason DD keeps talking about how someone 'spat on the curtains' Hmm). Don't much like running with people either...

OP posts:
drivingmisscrazy · 28/05/2011 14:44

oh what I came on to say is that my profile pic on fb is me sprinting for the line in the Achill half marathon (great event, you could make a lovely weekend of it with kids if so inclined)...

OP posts:
Themasterandmargaritas · 28/05/2011 15:51

Love the action shot driving. I'm not sure I ever move that fast. Is that a gin bottle in your hand Wink Dd is utterly adorable.

DrNo dh also runs, he is out now in fact. We are about the same level but we never run together, that is just, wrong.

Funny you should mention spitting, I have tried a few times and rather embarassingly it just sort of dribbles down my chin. I did manage a rather good one on Friday to the amusement of a group of schoolchildren.

notyummy · 28/05/2011 16:27

My DH runs - his 10K PB is 41 minutes, so i wont be joining him anytime soon. When he is home (which isn't that often at the moment...) he is great at making sure I get out. We also circuit train together in the family room! Don't run together though, even though for Half Marathon distance is appears that our speeds are quite as dissimilar (he is 7/8 minutes faster than me.) We would just annoy each other. He starts MUCH faster than me and gradually slows down - I am the opposite; I am generally faster in the second half of any distance.

Wheelybug · 28/05/2011 18:02

Hi All

I am another fan of Womens Running mag - have just finished reading my second copy and htinking of asking for a subscription for my birthday. I had zest for christmas which is ok but I think when I asked for it, it had just had a running special and I thought it would be more about running than it is.

I did 8 miles today. I struggle to run anything other than 1 speed when out (that is to say, it does deviate during a run but my overall average is the same). Psychologically it was quite a good route as it felt like I'd run further than i have before (when I have actually run further) as it was to Richmond and back.

Well done on all the runs today - especially the long ones. I am not a moist runner - usually get a very dry mouth.

Hope you had a nice day in Kingston Peach - its great for shopping. We're going in tomorrow but for furniture shopping (which probably won't last long with the dds in tow !).

drivingmisscrazy · 28/05/2011 18:31

I've not read Women's Running, must have a look. Usually running mags are an indulgence for solo travel, but I do enjoy them.

I just went out for about 4.5 miles, no expectations about pace etc - I'll start back into that next week. Very enjoyable, very windy, just a joy to be out there with a head full of good, positive thoughts :)

pan-fried sea bream with tomatoes and herbs, jersey royals, salad and asparagus for dinner, followed by sicilian lemon cheesecake. Thought that DP and I deserved a date night after the week we've had
