DrNo - lol. That's what I've been doing all evening Grin; I too am an only child with a difficult (understatement of the year) relationship with my mother. All her fault, of course Wink.

Am going to think about a running club for next year, I think - there's a long established one just a short distance away, and a few others than use the park nearby for training.

MrsWednesday · 31/05/2011 23:01

N4NNY, my running club is fairly massive and there are always a range of groups, and in each group a range of abilities - they usually structure the training so there's a chance for the slower ones to catch up and for the faster ones to keep moving (usually by looping round to the back of the group). I'm sure you'll be fine - it's daunting going for the first time but everyone has a love of running in common. Bit like here really.

Have been out for my first post-marathon run, a gentle 3.2 miles yesterday which was great, I felt all enthused, invigorated and pain-free. Then I spectacularly fell off my bike today (head over the handlebars) and have badly bruised my right thigh, so no doubt will be hobbling for a few days and therefore unable to run. Sigh.

My goals: long term to do a marathon under 4 hours, short term to get under 1.50 for the Bradford half (did it in 1.52 last year) and start doing parkruns, and overall to improve my core strength and various weaknesses in my legs, particularly my quads/glutes by doing more and better cross-training. Oh and to continue to run for the love of it, as well as for all the benefits it gives me mentally and physically.

Moshi, hope you are managing to get out for a run now and then in amidst the appointments and support you're giving to your mum. Sending positive vibes for next week.

Cestlavie, will things calm down enough for you to fit in at least one long run before your half? If only for your own peace of mind (you must have plenty of miles in the bank already).

Some v impressive and inspiring weight loss on here! I think I've plateaued too TMM, my weight doesn't vary much now and I think I'd find it difficult to reduce the amount I eat and still run any distance.

Happy running all.

MrsWednesday · 31/05/2011 23:02

Sorry, Driving, I meant to wish you and your Garmin a long and happy life together - I hope your first trip out tomorrow is a success Grin

squix · 31/05/2011 23:23

Loads to catch up again!

Thanks for all the military fitness stuff ? I think it will be the bottom group for me ? whilst I can run things like press ups are a real struggle ? I can do girly ones on my knees but that?s about it.

June2009 - well done on the weight loss ? I need a holiday too! And for the first time this summer I am not stressing about summer clothes. When I was carrying all that extra weight I always spent my time wrapped up in layers or covered by a cardie ? looking forward to feeling comfy in ?proper? summer clothes.

I think that the training for me is part of the sense of achievement in reaching the goals that I set myself. So it?s not just that I will run a sub 2hr half marathon (I will, I will) but the fact that 12 months ago my limit was 3 miles at 15 mins per mile and I have worked hard to achieve the goal.

Weight loss ? If it's what you want then I think it?s about finding what works for you. Everyone is different, has different lifestyles, and has non negotiables in terms of how their time is spent, exercise and what they eat. I realised I had to do something and something ? not sure what it was - prompted me to actually do something about it.

DrNo - lovely ? looks like one of the ?rave runs? in Runners World.

Debi - I am right in thinking that you are south England based and your Dad is in Scotland? I am t?other way round ? I?m in fife and my folks are spread out along the south of England ? Dad?s in the far south west. So whilst i don?t get to see my folks that often when I do spend time with them I try and make the most of it too. I feel very lucky to have them . We use Skype loads and DD gets a bedtime story at least once a week from her grandparents - I think she thought for a while they lived in the computer.

Moshi - glad things are progressing for your mum - will be thinking of you and your family next week. And very wise words about goals.....

Driving - I am very excited for your first Garmin run - I hope it lives up to expectations Smile

DrNortherner · 01/06/2011 00:06

NO Squix deffo NOT bottom group for you. Imo the bottom group is for unfit people new to exercise. That is not you. Aim high Grin

TheChewyToffeeMum · 01/06/2011 07:53

You got a lovely day for your cycle - did you follow the green circular route? The Dundee half marathon I am doing in July follows that route from Camperdown/Templeton east then down through Monifieth to finish at Broughty Promenade.

TheChewyToffeeMum · 01/06/2011 07:57

squix I know what you mean about the training being a goal/series of goals in itself. I am quite regularly amazed at the times and distances I cover in training.

I am in awe of running clubs with >100 attendees. I am not sure what our membership is but we usually have anything between 6 and 20 running each week.

DebiTheScot · 01/06/2011 08:24

yes I live in Hampshire and my parents are in Dundee & in-laws near Aberdeen (not far from backwardspossom). I like the skyping the bedtime story idea.
Yes it was the green circular we cycled. The half should be lovely, that section was nice. So do you live in Dundee too?

DebiTheScot · 01/06/2011 08:25

chewy what club are you in? I was in Hawkhill Harriers as a kid, do they still exist?

drivingmisscrazy · 01/06/2011 08:48

inspired by running club stories; I have a trapped nerve (or something) in my neck - numb radiating pain over shoulder and down right arm. Impossible to sleep - so am moving my running schedule around - I don't think running is a good idea as it will aggravate the injury. Am gutted...but have a feeling I might venture out for a quick test run in any case. But perhaps not speedwork.

The finish line is in sight - will put up new thread later this morning...

MrsWeds that's really helped me feel that my long term goals are more achieveable as right now I can't imagine running beyond 3 miles!

I think I need to do something else alongside the running though but will wait at least until my 3 miles are ran non stop.

Definitely agree with the initial realisation of needing to do something though. My running rebirth was because being at stay at home mum for nearly 4 years was slowly rotting my brain and needing to get out minus dc's, and then dh's HD diagnosis. The running hasn't improved the brain function Smilebut has helped give me a bit of space, more patience and perspective.

Should be out for a run this evening-really looking forward to it! Right, off to make bread with dc's. Have a lovely day everyone. Hope the sun is shining where you all are.

sfxmum · 01/06/2011 09:23

running clubs, I have been meaning to join the local for quite some time but can't quite pluck up the courage, partly because I am not much of a group person, partly because I feel I might not be good enough

also the army training stuff reminds me of childhood when my father used to make us do a bunch of exercisesHmm one of his weird attempts at parenting, he was a career army person

moshi good to hear there is some progress, I expect that lack of appetite is in way of the weight gain. It is nice to have family around at such times

driving hope the neck improves

here we are getting guinea pigsShock dd will be excited as she has been asking for it for well over a year

hope everyone else is well, sorry for lack of mentions

YeahThatsTheBadger · 01/06/2011 09:25

Sorry, I meant squix not mrsweds Blush

Oh no driving. Hope you're on the mend soon.

drivingmisscrazy · 01/06/2011 09:35

baton passed to new thread here

notyummy · 01/06/2011 09:39

Not the bottom group Squix - as has been said, I think that will be for people who are new to exercise. Whatever group you are in, it will probably still hurt tbh....but thats a good thing, right?!! I am a bit of a weirdo and love the whole shaky/jelly thing I get from really pushing myself with weight/push-ups or core work.

I used to belong to a Hash House Harriers group in Glasgow many years ago and LOVED it - but that was before DD when 'a drinking club with a running problem' more fitted my lifestyle Grin. I had a few raucous running weekends in the highlands though - running up hills with a hangover is not as bad when you are 25!

Working from home today so nipping out for a quick 7 miles in my new Mizuno trainers that were fitted yesterday (feel great and were in the sale!)

TheChewyToffeeMum · 01/06/2011 11:31

Debi Hawkhill Harriers still exists and is going strong - they have a good youth section. I run with Running Sisters - more low key with the emphasis on camaraderie rather than results. I live just outside Dundee to the north of Monifieth.

My in-laws are near Aberdeen too.

sfx there are usually a few different types of clubs around - from serious athletes to just a bunch of people who like some company when they run. I am sure you will find one right for you (if you want to).

DebiTheScot · 02/06/2011 21:26

How wierd toffee, where abouts? Mine are in Insch- between Inverurie and Huntly.

TheChewyToffeeMum · 03/06/2011 07:46

Mine are Kemnay so pretty close. I think Inverurie is where MIL goes to do her shopping.

backwardpossom · 05/06/2011 11:57

Aw, so near me :)
