Yeah, those Baltic states that have done so well out of being in the EU are just going to be stampeding to join. Not.

Nor will Poland, unless they get booted out of the EU, and as for Ukraine - not. A. Chance.

Boris is now officially on glue.

Peregrina · 28/05/2022 09:34

Johnson has proposed a "European Commonwealth" of the UK, Ukraine, Poland, Baltic States & later Turkey that would be an "alternative to the EU [for] countries united by distrust of Brussels and Germany's response to Russian aggression",

I suspect that he realises the tide is turning against the Brexit he's delivered. So he's darting ahead of the crowd and shouting 'follow me', in Heseltine's words. Similar ideas of an inner and outer EU have been put forward before, and Cameron for one rejected the idea, wanting to be 'at the top table'.

Poland and the Baltic States are already in the EU. I doubt whether they will want to leave. Turkey - well it's been trying to join for 40 odd years with no success. Would they want some half cock alternative - I suspect not.

So is this Johnson's way of trying to bring the idea of the EEA back onto the table? Or was it just 'how do I save my skin'? Partygate hasn't died down as it should. Rishi Sunak's U turns are just stealing Labour's clothes, and have been met with cynicism, rather than rapturous applause. Meanwhile more and more Tory MPs are putting their letters in - whether on principle or because they want to save their seats - who knows?

prettybird · 28/05/2022 09:43

As one of the comments to @danieltilles1 tweet said, did BJ confuse Baltic with Balkan? Confused

Knowing how cavalier careful he is with facts, it wouldn't surprise me Hmm

Peregrina · 28/05/2022 09:48

Or was he just rubbish at geography, which all his Cabinet seem to be?

DuncinToffee · 28/05/2022 11:34

Thats very sad, one wonders where this country would now be if RS had won or even Hunt, instead of our own mini Trump.

I'd suggest that ideally reuinification should be on the basis of majority support for it within both Nationalist and Unionist communities.

As a democrat I'd perfectly happily accept a simple majority of a single franchise (all voters) in NI but I recognise that a result on that basis would cause a lot of tension.

If the question is should there be any sort of "super majority" like a 60% threshold or something I'd say no.

A turnout threshold might be appropriate but I'd willingly accept a result with one or without it.

There is so much wrong with that, i can only think you are auditioning for HIGNFY or have been to a street party?

WorriedMutha · 28/05/2022 14:09

I keep my eye on the Brexit threads but I'm back now with renewed vigour.
I admire your tenacity for continuing the debate with L28 and Clav but I just scroll past it all as it saps my energy.
There is however a sniff of a slow painful demise for the Tory party and the Johnson project. I feel he's cornered on so many fronts. He can't get past the NI protocol and get Brexit done. He can't build back better. Check out Bloomberg on the looming car industry crisis after 5 years of Brexit uncertainty. The right think Sunak is throwing red meat at socialists. Johnson purged the grown ups in the party so the batshit membership can only choose another no hoper.
It really is popcorn time and I like popcorn so I don't want Boris to shuffle off too early. Cameron shat the bed and fucked off. Johnson needs to own his turd. This country can only unite if leavers come to realise that Brexit has failed and it takes time for that penny to drop.
I hope all the old crew come back to this thread with their pearls of wisdom. I'm talking to you RTB. It's a slow burner but I feel there's a turn.
Someone once said that Brexit will eventually eat itself because of it's own inherent contradictions. It's happening.

Desperate to keep the brexiteers happy

www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/boris-johnson-bids-jubilee-boost-27090524

EXCL: Boris Johnson plans to announce imperial measurements will be revived to mark Queen's Platinum Jubilee and boost flagging support among Brexit voters.

Things you should no longer expect from a UK minister “integrity, objectivity, accountability, transparency, honesty and leadership in the public interest.”...

Agree it’s putting in writing what he’s already been doing but it still is dragging the PM office to the lowest denominator that it’s ever been and further eroding parliament as a democratic institution and what tiny shred of trust there was left in politics and politicians. That is Johnson though and what he has always been.

What is more incredible to me that there are STILL ordinary law abiding conservatives who don’t habitually lie in their daily lives yet continue to support him. Depressing.

Peregrina · 28/05/2022 17:46

Not soon enough IMO- not before a huge amount of damage has been done.

DuncinToffee · 28/05/2022 17:53

The by-elections will be interesting.

Peregrina · 28/05/2022 17:54

What utter stupidity. Yet they supposedly want to encourage STEM subjects in schools. I have news for you Johnson, scientists have been using metric measurements for at least half a century.

DuncinToffee · 28/05/2022 18:03

Rory Stewart's reply Grin

I thought he’d already announced that - the problem is it doesn’t seem to have made a Tod of difference. I wouldn’t be in the same bovate as him. He could turn an ell into a cubit. Frankly give him a poppyseed and we all take a shaftment.

(as a foreigner I had to look up what it all meant, I am sure you British people won't have that problem....Wink)

Peregrina · 28/05/2022 18:12

Well my mother would have been happy because she didn't really hold with these metric measurements. She's been dead for more than a decade, so no vote there for him.

FrankieStein403 · 28/05/2022 18:24

Surely bringing back imperial measures is just allowing food to be sold in lbs/oz - feet, inches, pints, gallons have never gone away?

Unless this mandated then its basically no change - apart from the odd crazy butcher - who'll go out of business as nobody educated in the last 40 years will buy in lbs/oz

So just another dog whistle to the old tories.

DuncinToffee · 28/05/2022 18:31

The YouGov polls don't look good for him right now and neither do the queues in Dover so ofcourse Big Dog needs a dog whistle

ChiswickFlo · 28/05/2022 18:34

Brexshit flag shaggers will love it though

I remember DH and I both screaming at the radio one morning when metric packaging was coming in and on a phone in someone wad complaining that they used to but something in a half pound pack and now it was 250g but still the same price so it was hidden inflation. We were yelling 250g is bigger, it's cheaper and yet the presenter agreed 🤦‍♀️

Jason118 · 28/05/2022 20:08

Just for clarity.

Brexit mega thread 7 : global Britain is looking rather insignificant.....
Peregrina · 28/05/2022 21:05

Johnson's idea of global then - revert to a system mainly used by the USA but not entirely the same as the US system.

You really do have to wonder what they taught them at Eton.

prettybird · 28/05/2022 21:43

Surely bringing back imperial measures is just allowing food to be sold in lbs/oz - feet, inches, pints, gallons have never gone away?

....but it also means additional costs - which of course will need to be transferred onto all consumers, whether or not they want imperial measures Angry as local authorities will have to confirm the accuracy of imperial scales and measuring tools Sad

FrankieStein403 · 28/05/2022 22:04

The kg is now defined in terms of fundamental constants (specifically plank's) the lb will need defining in the same way - basically relative to si units. Unless of course the brexiteers want us to define 'english' fundamental constants...

DrBlackbird · 28/05/2022 23:29

Hmm maybe he’s counting on Trump getting back into the White House and so bringing back imperial lines the uk up for a trade deal where the us walk all over us in a few years time. Something else to look forward to then.

mathanxiety · 29/05/2022 02:11

No, he's crossing his fingers for a blockbuster deal with Myanmar.
