On here and in really life most Leave voters would burn their own house down for Brexit.

Can't admit they were swept up by the pseudoreligious zeal.

The celebration of opening a foodbank

Can't quite put my finger on it but isn't there something a bit amiss in these joyful pictures of the Mayor of Dartford.... opening a food bank t.co/l2QgMq8bQOtwitter.com/Otto_English/status/1524286886386221056?t=AEObtOu58QfL0M6xWJVZRw&s=19

Prices in Aldi have risen significantly since I last went about three weeks ago.

There is more, Lee Anderson saying that
there is, apparently, no real poverty in the UK. No need for food banks. Just people who don't know how to budget and cook.

Peregrina · 11/05/2022 17:39

Sadly, there will be plenty of people who agree with Lee Anderson. I can think of some - women on nice comfortable pensions earned by their husbands.

(Why they don't have decent pensions of their own is another issue.)

DuncinToffee · 11/05/2022 17:42

Yes, I have seen it on MN too.

pointythings · 11/05/2022 21:03

Clav was on the Lee Anderson thread pointing out how he couldn't possibly be anything but right because he comes from an old mining family and used to be Labour...

DuncinToffee · 12/05/2022 00:12

I saw that, she did miss out that he was suspended by the Labour party before defecting to the Tories.

Apparently the foodbank comment came at the end of a speech in which he equated refugees to benefit cheats and accused Labour of siding with rapists.

Something in The Graun that Liz Truss is determined to come all over Terminator tuff and show those EU baddies who’s boss by ‘scraping’ parts of the NI protocol. Otherwise how can they ever expect the DUP to bail them out ever again?

What DUP? The loud, draining noise you may hear is the sound of that party disappearing down the toilet. It seems voters in NI are not amused by their antics.

EU statement on the war drums currently being beaten in Westminster...

The Protocol, as a cornerstone of the Withdrawal Agreement, is an international agreement. Its renegotiation is not an option. The European Union is united in this opinion.
Seems pretty clear.

Peregrina · 12/05/2022 15:02

The latest news is that Suella Braverman thinks it will be OK to rip up the International Treaty which is the NIP. I suspect that she will find that there are much better lawyers versed in International law who will be able to tell her that if she believes this, the Government will have to take the consequences. Cue EU bullying us. It won't help with the US trade deals that they are so desperate for.

Did she get legal advice from Saul Goodman?

HannibalHeyes · 12/05/2022 18:40

No, Dominic Raaaaab...

DuncinToffee · 12/05/2022 18:45

They need a distraction from Lebedev, bungs and party gate.

borntobequiet · 13/05/2022 06:31

They’re about to get a mega dressing down from the US Congress and be made to toe the line

www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/may/12/us-congressmen-to-fly-to-london-amid-growing-concern-over-future-of-northern-ireland-protocol

Reported on BBC this morning but not on their website yet, though they do report that Ireland is out of Eurovision. Priorities.

DuncinToffee · 13/05/2022 08:24

The US also sent a letter in advance

Can't find it on the BBC website, cutting 91,000 civillian service jobs is headlining.

Peregrina · 13/05/2022 12:13

Well of course, all civil servants are a bunch of lefties, aren't they, so we can't have that.

Meanwhile, the passport service is in meltdown, as is the DVLC.

Peregrina · 13/05/2022 13:36

And of course, the nearly 500 councillors lost has gone unremarked as has the extra fines dished out.

DuncinToffee · 13/05/2022 15:23

Arj Singh (i news)

Rank-and-file officials tell me they think Boris Johnson has announced the cuts as a distraction.

"It's another kick in the teeth to hard working civil servants across the country who have kept this Government running while politicians get pissed and break their own rules."

It doesn't even come as a surprise anymore.

DrBlackbird · 13/05/2022 17:33

This link was posted on the Ukraine thread Kaja Kallas on Russian negotiating tactics and the strategy of appeasement. Eye opening, makes total sense. twitter.com/munsecconf/status/1512451999622643714?s=21&t=6-gjd-uaF34Du11LN8qmVw

Why can a country like Estonia with a population a fraction of the UK’s have an intelligent and articulate PM, but the UK can’t have bloody anyone in cabinet that could be described as such let alone our PM?

Minor but major issue for my family is being caught up in the passport service is in meltdown fiasco. DH sent mine off many weeks ago but we’re booked to travel to see my family end of June. I’ll be absolutely gutted if we can’t go because of no passport. Have been told to call x number to book interview and no one ever answers… ever. Just repeat message to send an email. Am convinced that there no actual person answering phones. My hairdresser can set up an online booking system, why can’t the government?
