@ancientgran

Just wanted to add we are two pensioners who didn't vote Conservative, my siblings and their partners didn't either. I reckon the pensioners I know who vote Conservative probably don't mention it, I can guess who they are and I'd love to know what they think now but we don't talk politics as we'd fall out.
My mum didn't either 😊

Neither did my MIL and she is in the same situation with her tariff as ancientgran

DGRossetti · 03/02/2022 16:27

54% is huge. The question is indeed whether people will join the dots and identify the source of the rise, or continue to think the party in power 'are doing their best'.

But Corbyn ....

I'm debating turning the heat off....

Maybe my awful peri menopausal hot flushes will be of benefit!! 😬

I'd also be a little more forensic looking at all this "aid" dishy Rishi is dishing out. I suspect the T&Cs will mysteriously preclude a lot of people. And that's before you realise these are all loans which we will be paying back. (as indeed all government spending is recouped ..)

OchonAgusOchonOh · 03/02/2022 16:58

Givan is gone. Resignation effective from midnight.

DuncinToffee · 03/02/2022 17:06

Rishi's 'aid' seems a £150 council tax rebate for bands a-d and a £200 up fromt 'discount' which will be paid back over 5 years.
So a £0 discount also known as a loan

Peregrina · 03/02/2022 17:07

Givan gone, Munira Mirza gone, but Johnson clings on.

Opal8 · 03/02/2022 17:10

It was interesting to note that in my (rather affluent) County fuel poverty is at 10-15%

Imagine what Durham or Blackpool is at? :(

Girvan: is this another DUP stunt to trade to GFA?

They are collapsing the executive so they can't implement anything significant but they can sort of function until the election. They're basically screwing the people of NI for their "principles" aka as the right to say No to everything.

I have no idea what's going on in NI. However given how it's the only part of the UK that is escaping most of the shitstorm that is Brexit, I wonder if the DUP have woken up and realised this may be the end of them as there are elections in May ?

Dh was saying that a few cynical Wink people on Twitter were suggesting that she was just getting out early so that she could present herself as untainted by BJ l, come the soon to be new leader/PM Grin

Opal8 · 03/02/2022 17:26

It's clear that De Pfeffle is copying Trump in accusing people of attrocious things that are just false to deflect from the clusterfuck of their making.

I was horrified to hear it in the HofC.

However, this does seem to be getting some traction now. Rishi saying "I wouldn't have said it".

It's all a bit Pastor Niemoller innit ?

Opal8 · 03/02/2022 17:28

I guess the big question is...

Will De Pfeffle still be in post for the May elections? Arguably they may not want a leadership change only 3 months out but alternatively a new leader could and sadly probably would get an election bounce?

I was horrified to hear it in the Hof

Maybe we need a special person to oversee debate in the House ? Someone who doesn't take sides in debates, but just keeps order ?

I guess since they wouldn't vote, they would just be a "speaker" ?

Might suggest it to my MP. See what happens/

LouiseCollins28 · 03/02/2022 17:50

@Peregrina

Being a pensioner myself, I know lots of others too, and I know quite a lot are worried about the increase in fuel bills. These are people with decent work pensions too - so not people barely scraping by right now, but relatively comfortable financially.
I agree with this. Also, just moving away from pensioners for a minute, I think rises of this scale are going to affect masses of people. Obviously there are people who are already struggling now for whom this is going to be really, really hard. However I think there are people who are quite comfortable who will be affected too (differently, sure) but still affected. Massive worry for lots of people.

In slightly more cheerful news...

I attended a schools Shakespeare festival yesterday evening and my son performed in the merchant of Venice.

So wonderful to see young people (and some were primary age) enjoying such activities and making so much effort.

It fair brought a tear to my cynical old eyes 😊
