@Peregrina

Except of course that NI did not vote for Brexit.
I don't think the devolved administrations have twigged quite how Westminster views their "votes" - in the same way a teacher views their classes votes for what to do for the end of term. It keeps the class busy while the initial decision is rolled out.

You don't get very far in Brexiteer conversations talking about other peoples democracy. And yes, remember, to a Brexiteer NI is as foreign as the dust swept plateau of Kashmir where the dust floats high in June. Etc. Etc.

Sky is reporting that the First Minister of Northern Ireland, Paul Givan, is expected to resign, today

I think they have a very good idea Confused - with the possible probable exception of the DUP in Stormont who are blinded by their Unionism Wink

NEW: Ofgem confirms that the domestic energy price cap will increase by £693 from April.

That’s an increase of 54%.

Sunak confirms that the government will not be cutting VAT on energy bills.

Michael Gove and Boris Johnson once said that being able to cut VAT was one of advantages of leaving the EU. BJ said in 2016: “When we Vote Leave, we will be able to scrap this unfair and damaging tax."

Peregrina · 03/02/2022 11:58

BJ said in 2016: “When we Vote Leave, we will be able to scrap this unfair and damaging tax."

But I thought we'd left!!!

DGRossetti · 03/02/2022 12:00

The UKs energy market was (and presumably still is) a scamsters paradise. Fuck all regulation and and endless supply of innumerate victims.

Some posters have been very "popped out" quiet of late.

Hundreds of jobs will be lost in Newcastle as Nestlé’s profitable sweets and chocolate factory is set to close and production move to the EU.

As reported yesterday in the Guardian:

“Fruit Pastilles will be made in the Czech Republic and Toffee Crisp bars in Poland, under proposals by Nestlé to close a factory near Newcastle.”

Those posters have been busy defending Johnson's gatherings and Savile comments before popping out when the facts became too much. Brexit is done remember.

The trouble is that Jeremy Corbyn spent so long opposing Brexit that we have the wrong kind of Brexit.
TheABC · 03/02/2022 14:54

That’s an increase of 54%.

That's scary. It's going to hurt anyone on a stagnant income without the buffer to absorb it. Add in the NI increase, and you are looking at the perfect storm for May's elections.

It is important to remember that wages have been stagnant or gone backwards for the last 10 years as well.

But fear not the economy is growing faster than any other in the G7 because we trashed it more first.

This is of course, a lot of pensioners, which includes a lot of Tory voters. I have written to Sunak to ask him when his Government is going to honour the promise to scrap VAT on energy bills as they implied they would once we had left the EU.

It is of course, like the £350 million a week for the NHS - we could spend it on the NHS, we didn't say we would.

DGRossetti · 03/02/2022 15:23

This is of course, a lot of pensioners, which includes a lot of Tory voters.

But we already know that Tories gonna Tory. Just look at that thread elsewhere.

Of course, it's entirely possible that's not a representative view of the UK. However, I've had my arse handed to me before when I have dared to apply the tiniest bit of sanity to appearances*. Not doing that again.

We also need to remember the media distortion around the idea of "pensioner". There are extremes of wealth and poverty there, just as elsewhere in society. A lot of voting pensioners may be relatively well-off.

Finally there's the wealth paradox. The more you have, the more you keep.

Opal8 · 03/02/2022 15:29

Maybe it will hit some tory voting pensioners?

Savings have made nothing for 10 years at least and food prices are seemingly increasing weekly.

Of course there are many (like my dhs aunt) who have NO clue what's going on and plenty of money to ride out any issues.

Well, yes.

But even with the NI and tax rise and scrapping the pension triple lock. if the "other thread" is to be believed people would rather die than not vote Tory. It's almost a sexual fetish for some.

However there is something in the air. I've just had another call from an agent that stumbled on my cv about a role they think I'd suit. Thats 8 since I accepted this role last week. Given that time is money for these guys it does look a little like there's a lot of vacancies in some areas. How much is expansion versus churn I don't know at the moment.

Having just left a role with a training provider, I know there is a lot of dosh for Restart and Kickstart sloshing around too.

Peregrina · 03/02/2022 15:41

Being a pensioner myself, I know lots of others too, and I know quite a lot are worried about the increase in fuel bills. These are people with decent work pensions too - so not people barely scraping by right now, but relatively comfortable financially.

My pils fit that category... Tory voting thatcher lovers It'll be interesting if it starts affecting them...other than mil having just had to pay to get her hip replaced. They will never not vote tory though Baffling

Mum will be ok. She's in sheltered housing now with community heating and uses very little gas/electric compared to when she lived in a 3 bed house.

Food wise she mainly eats m&s ready meals :)

Our food bill is huge now. Not helped by having 2 teenagers in the house I guess...
But what cost £80 pw a few months ago now costs £100/110 pw.
Same stuff. Same shop.

We've just cut the cable TV and streaming packages down. Also applied for a FR mortgage when our current one ends.

Difficult to know what else to do.

And therefore are first in the line of people the Tories will shaft. It really is like an abusive relationship to these mystified eyes.

countrygirl99 · 03/02/2022 16:05

FIL is in that category too. Despite depending on pension credit etc, heavily on funded social care and being horrified at a 2 hour queue for MIL to be taken into A&E after being taken to hospital with cardiac symptoms last autumn.

AuldAlliance · 03/02/2022 16:10

54% is huge. The question is indeed whether people will join the dots and identify the source of the rise, or continue to think the party in power 'are doing their best'.

Rishi Sunak tells MPs it is impossible to “artificially” hold down energy prices.
In other news, Shell today announced their profits have increased by fourteen-fold and they plan to hand $8.5 billion back to shareholders.

I'm on a good 12 month fix that ends in April so the increase is going to be 100% for me. It's back to the 70s.
ancientgran · 03/02/2022 16:13

Just wanted to add we are two pensioners who didn't vote Conservative, my siblings and their partners didn't either. I reckon the pensioners I know who vote Conservative probably don't mention it, I can guess who they are and I'd love to know what they think now but we don't talk politics as we'd fall out.
