The old thread is nearly full so as COP26 is in my home town, I thought I'd start the next one.

I'm not expecting anything wonderful from COP26. The selfishness that is Brexit will extend to the rich nations - or rather corporations, countries and cronies - not wanting to do anything that might actually cost them money or hurt their profits and having made their money on the back of the resources of the poorer nations (in some cases quite literally Sad), they'll expect them to pay the price for the riches of the West.

The deliberate mistranslation of France's letter to the EU will distract from real issues - but that's ok for BJ as he can then blame the perfidious French.

Nothing changes.

@LouiseCollins28

You'll forgive me Alondra for not being improverished when you say I am, or at least, not for the reasons you suggest.

Affection for our culture is long gone I think. Witness Eurovision as an example.

I'd have a hard time pointing out what our culture even was any more, I think we have "cultures" here in the UK, some very local some with worldwide influences.

Our national one (insofar as it exists) is so diluted, debased and homogensised that it's almost meaningless now and I find it very hard to identify with. If I can't, and I've lived here all my life, you might understand it's hard to be joyful when people claim that other Europeans continuing to identify with it is super important.

Culture is constantly evolving, it never stands still, we have regional cultures, there is no one national culture... look back in history, writers have been moaning about the collapse of this or that for centuries & yet here we still are!

On soft power, totally agree, no one listens to the UK, one reason COP26 was such a failure but people listen to the EU, they stuck to their guns over sanctions on Belarus and now migrants are being flown back to Iraq, we can't even get any sort of coop from France on our own border crisis... compare to post brexit?
We had an international voice, now we have as much influence as any other small country i.e. none

What's going on here

4 hours ago, Johnson threatens to sue The New European for the 'Buyer's remorse' story

2 hours later Downing Street denies plan for libel action against The New European.

The newspaper stands by its story.

DuncinToffee · 19/11/2021 15:58

A bit more on 'remorsegate'

Comment from Matt Kelly, editor in chief, The New European regarding #remorsegate and Boris Johnson's threat to sue the newspaper:

I laughed out lout about the Carrie and ex-husband comment. IMO it's only a matter of time but I think she might trade him in for a younger model.

Paul Dacre has pulled out of the race to become the next head of Ofcom

In a letter to The Times he describes his 'infelicitous dalliance with the Blob' & says senior Whitehall figures are determined to exclude anyone with right-of-centre views

FatCatThinCat · 19/11/2021 20:26

I can't believe I'm about to say something in defence of De Spaffel, but the 'buyer's remorse' comment doesn't really mean anything. It's the sort of unfunny joke that people make about their marriages all the time and doesn't necessarily mean it's on the rocks. I drive my DH up the wall doing it all the time. Whenever anyone mentions how long we've been married I always reply that I would have got less for murder, kind of thing.

Do you have the same marital history as Boris?

That’s a very fair point. I think BJ’s marital history and record of affairs perhaps leads people to read this less charitably than we might for others though . . .
FatCatThinCat · 19/11/2021 20:35

Yes his history definitely tinges it an unpleasant colour.

The NI Protocol: what’s happening?

UK insists it hasn’t flinched on A16

But EU figures believe the threat of retaliation, + damage done by Paterson/sleaze, led the PM to step back from the brink

Has this link been posted? About how Brexit has become a scred cow for the Tories

Acquacup · 20/11/2021 14:49

Evening Standard: "Government is taking all devolved funding and responsibility for Northern Powerhouse Rail away from the Northern transport body originally tasked with developing it.

In a letter to the chief executive of Transport for the North, sent on the day government’s new ‘Integrated Rail Plan’ was revealed, the Department of Transport confirmed it was taking sole responsibility for directing future work on the project - which was scaled back in yesterday’s announcement."
