Brexit Megathread - Part 1 because it's not over by a long shot

Started a new thread for all things Brexity as the last generic dumping ground reached its 1000 post limit. As this developing shitshow unfolds it's going to be important to share and unload. Clav of course will punt a contrarian view along with unrepentant 'taking back control' so-called Brexiteers. I look forward to seeing the benefits.

I note that the farmer said that last year he sold out. Last year we were still in the transition with FoM but were still at the height of covid, with the vaccine just on the horizon. This year they tell us that we are coming out of Covid and that 2/3 of the population have been vaccinated. So what is the one factor which has changed?

Christmas trees - no problem, get a nice plastic one which lasts for years and years and doesn't shed needles.

Chersfrozenface · 02/10/2021 16:40

UK licences of a certain vintage allow the holders to drive vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes and vehicle + trailer combinations of up to 12 tonnes. My brother, who holds just such a licence, is awaiting his letter from the government with bated breath.

prettybird · 02/10/2021 16:41

Fortunately the people we get our Christmas tree from go up to Aberdeenshire and cut the trees down themselves. They're never more than a couple of days old Xmas Smile

I can even (and have) ring them up to check that they've got the size I want (c3 metres) as they're on the other side of the city and they'll tell me to come the next day as they'll be getting a new load in.

And they're cheaper than the garden centres Xmas Grin says the Scot Xmas Wink

I was going to post about that earlier (got some really bad news that has distracted me today Sad): I checked my licence this morning and dh and I also have licences of that vintage, so we are eagerly awaiting the government invitation to earn more dosh and help the country out of its self inflicted hole Confused

PS I've never driven anything bigger than a 2l domestic car Hmm No, I tell a lie: I drove a small hire van once when I was moving my stuff up to Glasgow from Bolton. So there you are: plenty of relevant experience Wink

Jason118 · 02/10/2021 16:59

I also have one of those licences and drove a 7.5 tonne hire lorry when moving house. It was terrifying. Grin

Chersfrozenface · 02/10/2021 17:01

Sorry to hear you've had bad news, @prettybird.

My brother has driven Transits frequently and is retired, so is an ideal candidate. Wouldn't do it, but you'd think they'd ask.

One does wonder whether the government actually knows about the categories on older UK licences.

prettybird · 02/10/2021 17:06

@Chersfrozenface : the news really put things into perspective and made dh and I realise that life is too short Sad. A totally senseless death of a father of 3 young kids in a hit and run somewhere and at a time you'd never expect to need to watch for a car. Sad

Carpe diem.

Ad feminam? Takes the accusative?

Pointythings,
You may class me however you like. I really don't care. I post on threads when I want to. I have been on MN for years.
You are wrong.
Unless, of course, we are all visitors.

pointythings · 02/10/2021 19:46

spanner you are of course free to post here.

But until your posts go beyond 'I'm offended', 'You're all being mean' and 'Brexit is great and I'm glad I voted for it', don't expect anyone here to take you seriously.

wewereliars · 02/10/2021 20:11

Sorry for the horrible news @prettybird.

TheElementsSong · 02/10/2021 20:48

Sorry about your sad news @prettybird Flowers

AuldAlliance · 02/10/2021 22:03

@prettybird
Sorry to hear your news.
Life rears up now and then and reminds us how transient it is.
Hope you're OK.

borntobequiet · 03/10/2021 10:03

Romanes eunt domus

Yeah. What did we ever do for you?

borntobequiet · 03/10/2021 10:03

Oh prettybird, so sorry to hear of your bad news.

prettybird · 03/10/2021 10:28

This was the incident Sad So pointless Sad

Man hit by car dies in Glasgow supermarket car park https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-58774360

Ds used to coach rugby alongside him. He was heavily involved with the rugby club. A lovely guy. Such a waste Sad

In keeping with the Latin theme, it's a reminder to carpe diem Thanks

pointythings · 03/10/2021 10:32

prettybird that is so sad. Look after yourself and your DS.

DuncinToffee · 03/10/2021 10:36

That is so sad prettybird, my thoughts are with you all.

DGRossetti · 03/10/2021 11:19

Sorry to @Prettybird Sad

I post this link as it popped up in my LinkedIn

maritimementvotre.fr/2021/09/30/bretagne-les-pecheurs-malouins-face-au-mepris-de-jersey

Now generally my LinkedIn feed is very carefully curated (thanks to a combination of my own efforts and the fact that we have someone who's full time job for our company is to manage keep the chaff out such things giving me a masterclass in tweaking settings to keep things sane.

So to see posts about Brexit sneaking in suggests it's unavoidable at all levels despite mainstream media of discussion.

Here's a useful graphic for those claiming the UK has the highest growth, or whatever bullshit they're coming up with.

Hint, we're the blue line at the bottom...

But it looks like we do have the highest rate of growth
