Brexit Megathread - Part 1 because it's not over by a long shot

Started a new thread for all things Brexity as the last generic dumping ground reached its 1000 post limit. As this developing shitshow unfolds it's going to be important to share and unload. Clav of course will punt a contrarian view along with unrepentant 'taking back control' so-called Brexiteers. I look forward to seeing the benefits.

www.irishtimes.com/business/financial-services/rees-mogg-declares-himself-fan-of-irish-investment-regime-1.3822113

It must have been just a coincidence that Rees-Mogg decided the time was ripe to take advantage of Ireland's attractiveness for certain kinds of investors.
“The way the global financial system works is that different jurisdictions are suitable for different investors,” explained Rees-Mogg. “Ireland . . . is a particularly attractive place for funds, irrespective of Brexit.”

Could it be that it is attractive for the certain kinds of investors who need EU access?

Labour should be talking more about Brexit probs (and should be better in opposition)

The Brexiters must be desperate - I have had two ad hominem attacks in the past three days. (Or should that be ad homina since I am female?)

Latin doesn't work like that ... it would be ad femina

or more poetically ad virago Grin

Peregrina · 02/10/2021 08:22

Back to Boris's Bungled Brexit - the UK now seeks to plug itself back into the EU power system.

Why I wonder? Brexiters promised us that we would be better off out.

Peregrina · 02/10/2021 08:23

it would be ad femina

Yes, well, I was booted out of Latin for failing the exam with a dismal result. The only saving grace was that there were others who got worse results.

What did they think was going to happen when they decoupled? Confused

So 9 months later they think that they should consult about operational arrangements??

I am not a visitor. I have been on these threads since the beginning, but I post when I choose. It is a public forum. You don't own it.

DrBlackbird · 02/10/2021 09:22

Amusing twaddle

I’m not sure that
farmers,
fisherman,
finance industry,
logistic and haulage firms,
poultry industry,
hospitality industry,
racing industry,
British travellers, musicians and artists,
Not to mention NI…. etc etc

….would agree with that utterly dismissive seemingly determinedly obtuse and ignorant ‘I’m alright Jack’ statement in referring to the ruination of all those people’s livelihood as twaddle. Shock

borntobequiet · 02/10/2021 09:22

Ad feminam? Takes the accusative?

borntobequiet · 02/10/2021 09:26

I remember enough to be dangerous

Me quoque

prettybird · 02/10/2021 09:30

@DrBlackbird Sad

You missed out the sewage/water treatment industry (and by extension, those of us who visit beaches) Sad

All those sectors are just not thinking positively enough Hmm

borntobequiet · 02/10/2021 09:33

You do seem to come in for a few personal attacks, Peregrina. So do some others. I’m going to look out for such comments as I have a vague feeling that “feminine” type names might be targeted. Prettybird has had some. Or maybe it’s just bird related?

borntobequiet · 02/10/2021 09:34

I’ll keep a watchful eye on DrBlackbird now!

Grin borntobequiet

My real life name, which I use in a shortened form, coupled with my unusual Germanic surname, means that on paper I look like a German male Grin

Had a disagreement with a colleague decades ago when he wanted to put my "title" (which, when I was forced to use one, was Ms) on my business card. My lovely boss supported me, saying that if they didn't know what sex I was when I handed them a business card, they had bigger problems Grin

I liked the fact that using letters (in those pre email days), signed off without a title (and definitely no "pronouns" Wink) that customers etc might expect to meet a German male and got me Wink

pointythings · 02/10/2021 09:50

I think it's pretty safe to say that on these threads, you're classed as a 'visitor' if you don't contribute anything to the discussion but instead confine yourself to being offended, personal attacks (no, I didn't take Latin) and saying how great Brexit is (by C&P irrelevant twaddle about bad things happening in EU countries or otherwise).

This means LouiseCollins28 is not classed as a visitor. Clavi and The Spanner are.

Just found this in the German magazine der Spiegel and thought you might like it-Germans in the uk are being asked to Drive vans www.spiegel.de/wirtschaft/brexit-krise-in-grossbritannien-deutsche-einwohner-sollen-lkw-fahren-a-758b248e-7809-4a5c-9b50-52f609e83fed?sara_ecid=soci_upd_KsBF0AFjflf0DZCxpPYDCQgO1dEMph

Scurrilous letter
British government asks German residents to drive lorries

The British Ministry of Transport has asked thousands of Germans on the island to drive trucks - even if they have never done so before. The background is the German driving licences issued until 1999.

The ministry's letter states, among other things: "Their valuable skills and experience have never been more needed." There are fantastic opportunities in the logistics industry, it says, and employment conditions have improved. Wages are attractive, flexible working is not an issue, and full- and part-time employment are equally possible, it says.

The newspaper quotes a 41-year-old German who, together with his wife, had received two copies of the letter: "I am sure that pay and conditions for truck drivers have improved, but in the end I decided to push my role at an investment bank," he said. His wife also declined with thanks, saying she had never driven anything bigger than Volvo. (…)

HannibalHayeski · 02/10/2021 11:49

Yet they're still gaslighting us that everything is fiiiiiiine...

Jason118 · 02/10/2021 12:52

I decided ages ago that both clav and yellow are not real people. The positions they take are too delusional especially when they fail to acknowledge any of the real issues since Brexit. Louise on the other hand admits the issues and without necessarily agreeing with many things that are said on this board, makes rational cases on what she thinks, to her credit.

wewereliars · 02/10/2021 12:55

It's only lily livered remainers who worry about HGV drivers, petrol and food and supply chains.

Thr brexshitters are filling up on sovereignty

HannibalHayeski · 02/10/2021 13:04

The truth about turkeys that the BBC et al won't allow to be shown.

Interesting article about the brewing fishing dispute

https://www.thelocal.fr/20211001/analysis-why-the-new-fishing-row-between-france-and-uk-could-get-nasty/?fbclid=IwAR3MmX8PJ38IcNyKcFFg7vQ1mc715JCJJGJXs8EusWKO9zxIiIjRqsazRF8

It also points out that those few licences that are being issued are skewed in favour of the largest boats with satellite tracking rather than the smaller, genuinely family run boats with hand written records. But how bad will and point scoring in the respective capitals is getting in the way of resolving it Sad

Also an interesting contrast between Jersey and Guernsey's respective approaches.

DrBlackbird · 02/10/2021 16:23

Speaking of birds Grin ….FT reporting today that our British Christmas is being saved by French and German turkeys being imported to cover the loss of British turkeys. Now what are we going to do about our Christmas trees??
