Brexit Megathread - Part 1 because it's not over by a long shot

Started a new thread for all things Brexity as the last generic dumping ground reached its 1000 post limit. As this developing shitshow unfolds it's going to be important to share and unload. Clav of course will punt a contrarian view along with unrepentant 'taking back control' so-called Brexiteers. I look forward to seeing the benefits.

Genuinely absolutely nothing to do with Brexshit, but I need to post it somewhere;

OKay, catching up a bit here. Can anyone give a clue or 2 about who the "intellectuals" are? Last time I thought in such a way was under New Labour G'overnance when we were ruled by an 'intelligentia' with Degrees in Polenta from the Uni of Islington.

Are many here seriously considering being an HGV driver now or just full of opinions about 'others' that actually do the job? I looked into it myself about 8 years ago, thinking it would pay enough so I could pay someone else to undertake my Caring responsibilities.

Hardly much above NMW, it turned out. I think we can all now agree that the T&Cs of HGV Drivers needs improving.

pointythings · 01/10/2021 20:36

I absolutely agree HGV drivers should be better paid. That's started happening both here and in the EU and it's a good thing. It isn't just money though - it's everything: having to wait for days at the UK border now when drivers within the EU can just move through unhindered - which impacts earnings. Provision of parking, showers, food and other facilities - which is so, so much better in the EU than it is here. And lastly the 3 month visas, which are frankly an insult.

DuncinToffee · 01/10/2021 20:44

And don't forget how HGV drivers were treated in Dover last Christmas

DGRossetti · 01/10/2021 20:52

Keep 'em coming.

Completely agree that UK infrastructure for HGV drivers is terrible and needs improving now. So now finally the UK population gives a fk...the realization that actual skilled people delivered their 'stuff' would have happened sooner if it wasn't for Covid and was just Brexit alone.

yellowspanner · 01/10/2021 20:56

Peregrina, stop making excuses.
Many well off southerners live in London and they voted overwhelmingly to remain. And they don't sound at all like that.
You were parodying working class people.

HannibalHayeski · 01/10/2021 20:57

No, parodying Brexshitters. They are the ones who voted to get rid of the forriners. And, frankly, they're fucking idiots.

yellowspanner · 01/10/2021 20:58

I'm here all the time. I just don't bother posting but all your twaddle amuses me. I am so glad I voted Leave.

Peregrina · 01/10/2021 21:00

You were parodying working class people.

I most certainly wasn't but if you want to think it, so be it. I am happy to admit to parodying Brexiters in general and you went and fell for it.

But come on, it's Friday night, you should be out celebrating the wonders of Brexit.

HannibalHayeski · 01/10/2021 21:03

Ah, Yellow is one of those that think that the government writing to literally anyone who has a licence to drive a larger vehicle (I've just seen on on twitter who drives a roro ferry ffs), to drive a truck, whilst telling us that there isn't any kind of problem and it's all worse everywhere else, is something good. Or something. I'm getting to the point where I honestly can't work through the bullshit.

And it thinks this is a good thing.

Pillock...

I've always assumed that every time someone writes 'furriners' it's parodying the shouty people who comment on Daily Mail articles. It's nothing to do with 'working class' - it's ignorant, shouty, red-faced loons.

I'm working class but I still look down on him.

Brexiters' skills are limitless, including but not limted to, mind reading.

Getting the point, maybe not so much.

DuncinToffee · 01/10/2021 21:18

I looked it up and have learned it is an 'eye dialect'

TheElementsSong · 01/10/2021 21:18

Also, having the most delicate sensibilities. That's a skill.

Slight titter from this...

pointythings · 01/10/2021 21:33

Brexiters as a collective are the princess who slept on the pea - thin skinned to the point of being ridiculous. They won, but they still haven't got over it.

Meanwhile I really hope ambulance and fire engine drivers don't all flock towards the wonderful life of a HGV driver.

TheElementsSong · 01/10/2021 21:37

Brexiters as a collective are the princess who slept on the pea - thin skinned to the point of being ridiculous. They won, but they still haven't got over it.

Except that they stuck the fucking pea in the bed in the first place. And they're howling because we warned them it might be a bad idea. Oh, and it wasn't a pea but a thorn.

HannibalHayeski · 01/10/2021 21:38

• Spain have just announced energy bills will fall by 22%

• France announce £100 energy vouchers & a cut from 12% to 4% in electricity rise

• Italy announce a €3.5bn plan to protect poorer from energy rise

Meanwhile in the UK the government have backed a 12% price rise...

They truly are Schadenfreudian EU HGV drivers: simultaneously having depressed the wages here but not coming here because the conditions are not good enough. Simultaneously nothing being to do with Brexit but because causing problems through their absence because of Brexit Confused

What I don't understand, genuinely, is a) why Brexiters think that it was the EU's fault that wages and conditions for HGV drivers were poor Confused and b) and in particular what they think was stopping the UK investing in decent infrastructure to make it more pleasant to be a long distance driver within the UK Confused (whereas on the continent they can stop, sleep and eat in pleasant environs for free/a nominal cost Confused).

The UK's low wage, low cost economy as and is purely down to Government strategy. Confused

pointythings · 01/10/2021 22:33

prettybird can you stop it with the facts already? Our visitors can't handle that stuff, we mustn't shatter their fragile dreams.

prettybird · 01/10/2021 22:57

A few typos in my post. I'm sure they'll be able to quibble about them Wink

For the record: Simultaneously being nothing to do with Brexit but because causing problems through their absence because of Brexit and The UK's low wage, low cost economy was and is purely down to Government strategy

It just makes me angry that blame for deliberate Government strategy (as well as corporate strategy aided and abetted by well meaning but misguided things like tax credits which just subsidise corporate profits was shifted on to the EU Angry - which, contrary to the portrayal by Brexiters, tried to mitigate the worst effects of that strategy with things like the ERDF Confused

Cornwall is a good example Sad

mathanxiety · 02/10/2021 01:12

Please tell me what you mean by "talk furrin".
Is it racist or is it mocking the way some working class people say foreign? 🤷‍♀️
Whichever way you look at it, it is a slur.
Or is it that you can't spell?

@yellowspanner
The term 'forrin' (also 'furrin') has been used on Brexit-related threads and many other threads for many years now.

Did you save up your umbrage for the fuel shortage?
