Brexit Megathread - Part 1 because it's not over by a long shot

Started a new thread for all things Brexity as the last generic dumping ground reached its 1000 post limit. As this developing shitshow unfolds it's going to be important to share and unload. Clav of course will punt a contrarian view along with unrepentant 'taking back control' so-called Brexiteers. I look forward to seeing the benefits.

Well, a lot of people voted Leave to stop foreign workers from coming here.
The consequences of that vote are now being felt.
It is becoming clear that it wasn't the smartest of choices.
Interpret that how you will.

It’s going to be interesting seeing what global supply chain issues/ shortages, Brexit and Covid all look like when combined during the autumn winter. I feel some of our fellow Brits are in for a rude awakening.

TheElementsSong · 01/10/2021 18:00

The misdirection, faux-offence and general squirrelling are quite amusing.

Meanwhile:

Ministers have written to thousands of firefighters and ambulance drivers - urging them to give up life-saving jobs and take up HGV driving - excl by @mikeysmith

The Daily Mash must be really struggling at the moment: how to write "funny" stories that actually recognisably satirical and not factual WinkConfused

Empty shelves in central Brussels despite the EU.

In Carrefour stores due to a strike at the Carrefour distribution centre

prettybird · 01/10/2021 19:05

Nice try Wink

DuncinToffee · 01/10/2021 19:13

It's almost as if I expected that post seeing Carrefour trending Smile

Many comfortably off southerners voted for Brexit. Many of whom speak in what sounds like a lazy drawl to me, and foreign does indeed come out as furrin.

But we have had a sudden influx of paid up Leavers - pity they cannot list the benefits of Brexit. The latest piece of news which made me laugh out loud was about German residents being asked if they could drive HGVs.

wewereliars · 01/10/2021 19:21

As well as Firemen, nothing to see here, everything's absolutely fine.

pointythings · 01/10/2021 19:23

Empty shelves due to local strikes in a single supermarket chain due to strike action really can't be equated to systemic, nationwide and fully self-inflicted shortages across a wide range of supply chains. Saying 'nice try' is being overly generous. A poor effort, D-.

Peregrina · 01/10/2021 19:27

Those who passed their driving tests before January 1997 (which both DH and I did by a good many years) are qualified to drive C1 and C1E, i.e. vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes with a trailer up to 750kg.

I wonder when the Government will be calling us up to do our bit?

dontcallmelen · 01/10/2021 19:31

My local fairly large Sainsbury’s the gaps on the shelves becoming much more noticeable very little fresh meat, bread, milk & fresh veg fruit also has been really scarce last couple of weeks.
Creative filling going on a lot as well, the same products across multiple shelves only one deep nothing behind.

You can't do it commercially unless you've got a Driver CPC though. That's what the wine chap was alluding to the other day.
dontcallmelen · 01/10/2021 19:34

I hope they don’t I’m a terrible driver.

FatFredsFriedEgg · 01/10/2021 19:37

Funnily enough the Driver CPC is something that most UK HGV drivers would describe as a piece of useless, unwanted EU legislation. I'm surprised they haven't dropped it already - it's a very recent thing anyway.

Peregrina · 01/10/2021 19:37

Should I be upset that this bars me from doing my bit to Make Brexit Succeed. Or should I be thanking my lucky stars?

prettybird · 01/10/2021 19:39

I don't think my sarcasm came across in print Grin

The influx of squirrels demonstrates just how rattled they are. They always visit when things are going badly Wink

It's quite amusing and reassuring really Grin

pointythings · 01/10/2021 19:39

And meanwhile the government's own squirrel squad is drawing attention away from Brexit by suggesting bringing back SATs at age 14 and taking the cap off teacher hours.

I left the industry early in 2020, having studiously ignored the upcoming Brexit problems after my initial attempts to address them were thwarted by ever-moving goalposts. It's not my circus and I'm definitely not having anything to do with organising the monkeys.
