So Grant Shapps' solution to the shortage of lorry drivers is to allow them to drive longer hours.

Leading to more accidents and deaths on the UK's roads. But Brexit is Job Done and all is well - isn't it?

Why the Government really wants to get rid of GDPR

This is nothing to do with Churches not being allowed to advertise jumble sales as they are trying to claim. It's as much to do with pulling us away from the EU and aping American practices. You might think that with the Afghanistan debacle and the lack of consultation by the US that they might just wake up to the idea that being up the Americans' arse all the time, is not the best position to be in. But no, our Government of Johnson toadies are not the sharpest knives in the drawer.

Anyone read about the entire database of UK gun owners being put online with addresses of firearms holders in a handy Google Earth mashup for the really technophobe criminals ?

I shit you not.

And, of course, one of the best ways to encourage lorry drivers is to fine over 2000 of them £300 a pop for not having the correct Brexshit paperwork . . . to enter Kent.

I’ve been listening to these excellent podcasts on the BBC from Queen’s University Belfast on the partition of Ireland. Such a mess from its inception.

(Thank God there are still some serious radio offerings from the Beeb. I’m utterly sick of Horrible Histories type programmes and, worse, their science equivalents.)

What the Express failed to mention was that a court case by Hoey and her gang ruled that yes Brexit (the withdrawal agreement) does contradict the Act of Union. Because *that's what sovereign parliaments can do^

Given the UK has made such a pigs ear of leaving the EU - who weren't chasing us out with AK47s - the spectacular balls up in Afghanistan should not have come as a surprise to anyone who isn't dim.

HannibalHayeski · 01/09/2021 10:22

Ah, that would be Kate Hoey, who was only Northern Ireland Minister. And who has just admitted that she threw, er, Northern Ireland under a big red bus in order to appease the gods of Brexshit...

HannibalHayeski · 01/09/2021 13:39

And now, Brexshit scarecrow Tim Martin is complaining that he can't get beer to his pubs.

It's the gift that just keeps giving...

pointythings · 01/09/2021 13:49

Hannibal you're going to have the Scarecrow Anti Defamation League after you!

Who is Mr Wetherspoon blaming? Not so long ago he was making a song and dance about how he didn't need EU beers and wines, and I assume that he knows enough people with vans that he can press into service to pick up a few barrels and crates from the breweries.

bellinisurge · 01/09/2021 14:15

Saw a comment today from NI to the effect that it can still trade comfortably (ish) with the EU and certainly with Ireland. It's England, Scotland and Wales that is fucked. In economic terms, that is.

HannibalHayeski · 01/09/2021 14:24

Tim Nasty-but-Dim's business model is to buy his beer at the cheapest he can, often when it's nearing it's use-by date so he can gouge the price even more, so it's just possible that the breweries may consider prioritising other establishments...

In a way this pleases me. That despite cunts like Hoey throwing them under the bus, they actually are best placed to exploit Brexit. Unintended consequences and all that.

As for Tim Martin - he can Fuck Right Off.

www.theguardian.com/education/2021/sep/01/thousands-of-british-students-in-limbo-with-post-brexit-visa-chaos

to quote - 'In the most extreme case, the UK government has asked Spain to set up a fast-track visa process for British students wanting to study and work there after the Spanish embassy in London was overwhelmed by applications.'

and what was previously free is now £700

AuldAlliance · 01/09/2021 19:04

Emma Cayley, chair of the University Council of Modern Languages and a professor at Leeds University, said the post-Brexit chaos has driven languages departments to lobby the government to negotiate visa exemptions for students studying or working in the EU as a compulsory part of their course.
From the article Eve linked.

No mention of the similat hurdles EU students have to go through to get visas, or the cost of language tests, healthcare fees and requirements for ££ in your bank account every month. Maybe the UK could negotiate some reciprocal system so students have FoM.
Oh, hang on...

Reminds me of this:

DGRossetti · 01/09/2021 19:04

the UK government has asked Spain

Hmm

The problem for the UK - especially given the tone of Brexit - is that such requests can't help but come across as a demand. And that really, really, really doesn't go down well.

We've already demanded they let us back in to Lugano. We've demanded they recognise our Data Privacy laws ....

Peregrina · 01/09/2021 19:52

We demand this that and the other, but at the same time are not prepared to budge on things which they would find helpful.

BettyAndFrank · 01/09/2021 20:04

Oh FFS!

The UK has drawn up contingency plans to move Trident from Scotland to US or France.

So the EU army is treachery but the FRENCH can babysit our nukes.

This level of mental fuckwittery has gone beyond surrealism into an entirely new realm of idiocy that is, frankly, beyond comprehension of anyone with a functioning braincell...

borntobequiet · 02/09/2021 06:50

Paywalled but - surely the US wants Trident this side of the pond, not theirs? And the French have their own nukes, n’est ce pas?

So despite the rhetoric, Scottish Independence is a very real possibility.
