So Grant Shapps' solution to the shortage of lorry drivers is to allow them to drive longer hours.

Leading to more accidents and deaths on the UK's roads. But Brexit is Job Done and all is well - isn't it?

My thoughts exactly DGR - with the way that the Government denied it.

prettybird · 02/09/2021 09:50

It show they are now genuinely scared of the possibility. Smile

I have a friend who was doing a lot of high level work with the government in 2014 in a particular sector that would've been impacted by independence and he was ShockShockShock to be told that they were doing no contingency planning for if the vote had been Yes Hmm

It explains the panic and all the promises that were reneged on when there was a poll that suggested that Yes could win Wink

Peregrina · 02/09/2021 10:00

I think I read that Highways England has been or is going to be rebranded as National Highways - even though it won't cover either Wales or Scotland.

If they are making contingency plans it might just suggest that they have learnt something from Brexit.

@borntobequiet

Paywalled but - surely the US wants Trident this side of the pond, not theirs? And the French have their own nukes, n’est ce pas?
Umm…Wonder what the US will think of that?

Last time I looked the arrangement was that the missiles (not the warheads themselves) were leased from the US stock, and returned to the US on a rotating basis for servicing…those handed back being replaced by others from the US stockpile.

Peregrina · 02/09/2021 10:46

You must laugh at this, there is no shortage of pickers when the raspberries are given away free.

AuldAlliance · 02/09/2021 10:53

Free fruit and a free for all... perfect.

Anecdata of the day:
I am receiving a steady trickle of emails from UK students saying they haven't got their visa for this semester's exchanges yet and asking for advice. Of which I have none. If they are not in France, they can't follow classes and take assessments and we don't have the resources to provide tailormade online courses while they obtain (or don't obtain) their visa.

With the material to replenish them dwindling, thanks to the decline in nuclear power over the Western world.

Bearing in mind the UK has never had the ability to launch them independently, no matter what you've been told. (Go on, I dare someone to cite something from a government source ..)

Farming Today- Where is the Trade and Agriculture Commission?

I guess that of course depends on where you’ve worked and who you talked to…

I do know it’s one of those subjects where lots of people think they know the answer but the relative few who actually have any genuine knowledge don’t tend talk about it..hmm]

Peregrina · 02/09/2021 13:27

But meanwhile, Express Readers blame Brexit for the shortage of lorry drivers. There is the caveat that the poll was completed by many who were not normal Express readers. I like the way the boss of Next (Brexit supporters) try to wriggle out of admitting that it's the fault of Brexit.

TatianaBis · 02/09/2021 14:04

First half sales fall by £2 billion.

DGRossetti · 02/09/2021 14:05

Those of us old enough, will remember a time when it was a running joke that certain developments were down to "The bloody common market". With as much relation to the truth as was evident during the leave campaign.

I suspect that if we reach a similar stage where everything is "Bloody Brexit" (and the alliteration won't do any harm at all. Not that the Great Anglophone public are suckers for a slogan ...) it will indicate a tipping point.

purplesequins · 02/09/2021 14:08

on that note my expat shop has stopped stocking british foods.
irish cheddar and sausages are nice, but not quite the same.
I don't care much about frozen yorkshire puddings or potato waffles but I know some relied heavily on comfort food from 'home'.

borntobequiet · 02/09/2021 14:08

Suckers for a Slogan is pretty much a slogan in itself.

If it's any consolation England is slowly slipping back to the grey 70s, when people visiting our house were bemused by pizza, pasta and olives, and could not believe fresh ground coffee.

And we lived in London.

My French supermarket in London has had stuff out of stock. 😤

Marronsuis can’t live without, Chamonix biscuits, foie de morue fumé, jars of cassoulet.

HilaryThorpe · 02/09/2021 14:52

I think the British Corner Shop has opened a depot in the Netherlands. It may solve the Great Brinjal Pickle Shortage, but not sure they have fresh stuff and I could murder some Wensleydale cheese and a pork pie.

TatianaBis · 02/09/2021 14:54

Deal: I send you some Wensleydale, you send me some Ossau Iraty Wine

HilaryThorpe · 02/09/2021 15:10

Would do TatianaBis but cheese is on the forbidden import list. 😨 I have sourced (sauced) horseradish from Amazon.de (raifort in the shops is pathetically mild) and I have lots of HoiSin as six jars was the minimum order. Fortunately Carrefour now seems to have more Patak stuff in.

TatianaBis · 02/09/2021 15:41

So it is. We're locked in.

Thus far friends coming over here have brought supplies 'for their own personal use'.

One of my sisters is desperate to go to France but only half vaccinated due to a bad reaction to the first jab - which means she has to have an essential reason to travel to get in.

So I suggested we set off in a motorboat from Dover on calm day. I'm sure we can find a quiet cove to land in Normandy with provisions including Waitrose aubergine pickle for my aunt.

My Godmother used to smuggle chorizo back from Spain in the 70s.
borntobequiet · 02/09/2021 16:51

Not import related, but my dear MIL used to bring food when she came to stay for a few days and one turned up with a frozen leg of lamb wrapped in a cardigan in her suitcase.
