So Grant Shapps' solution to the shortage of lorry drivers is to allow them to drive longer hours.

Leading to more accidents and deaths on the UK's roads. But Brexit is Job Done and all is well - isn't it?

Oh now I find that those EU workers who went home for lockdown may have actually lost their right to return.

Malta, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Denmark and Ireland overtake UK in fully jabbed percentages.

DuncinToffee · 29/08/2021 10:57

The Daily Mail is suggesting to 'unite with EU to crush the curse of border bureaucracy'..........

HannibalHayeski · 29/08/2021 12:33

OK, I don't know if the Daily Heil is gaslighting or taking the piss now.

Pisslighting?

Swift vaccination roll out earlier in the year was crucial for the UK. I remember looking at the charts for March to June - nearly 20,000 people died in Germany compared to 3,000/4,000 in the UK over the same time period.

27 August - Coronavirus vaccines have so far saved 100,000 lives, PHE study reveals.

www.theweek.co.uk/news/uk-news/953960/coronavirus-vaccines-saved-100000-lives-phe-study

From Hester's Independent link;

as many as 1.3 million foreign workers left the UK last year – the largest exodus since the Second World War...

In which case, how accurate is the UK's population estimate used by Our World In Data for their vaccine tracker chart? There's a link on their website (FAQs) - population estimate for the UK:

GBR 2021 68207114

How accurate is 68.2m if we have had a mass exodus of people? Perhaps our jabbed percentages are better than we think, or at least not a fair comparison.

"Swift vaccination roll out earlier in the year was crucial for the UK. I remember looking at the charts for March to June - nearly 20,000 people died in Germany compared to 3,000/4,000 in the UK over the same time period."

Germany: Total deaths in a larger population 92,136

Uk deaths 132,000

Clavinova · 29/08/2021 13:07

Germany: Total deaths in a larger population 92,136

Germany only had 10,000 deaths after the first wave - they were held up as an example to follow - not now. I see that Biden's USA has now overtaken the UK for deaths per one million population - worse than Trump.

Clavinova · 29/08/2021 13:17

In fact, Worldometer use a similar population figure as Our World in Data;

The current population of the United Kingdom is 68,298,328 as of Sunday, August 29, 2021, based on Worldometer elaboration of the latest United Nations data.

  • what happened to the mass exodus of people?
HannibalHayeski · 29/08/2021 13:19

And yet Germany's figure are still better than the UK.

Is it Clav that's pisslighting now?

HannibalHayeski · 29/08/2021 13:20

I was only wondering a few days ago why we haven't seen Clavinonothing popping up to declaim all those wonderful Brexshit wins.

Then I realised...

Clavinova · 29/08/2021 13:24

HannibalHayeski

I'm going out for a late lunch now - might pop back later.

HarrietPierce · 29/08/2021 13:24

And spanner and "Job done" Fox.

Peregrina · 29/08/2021 13:26

Brexit must be going badly since Clavinova has surfaced to tell us how much worse other countries are doing.

What do we make of the Mail's comments? Anyone would think that the EU kicked the UK out. Not that the UK chose to leave and the Tory Government chose to negotiate with belligerence and bad faith.

Then of course, the TrueBelievers used to put their faith in NATO as the force which had kept the peace in Europe. With the American led debacle in Afghanistan, NATO is now looking a bit tarnished.

Peregrina · 29/08/2021 13:33

Has a difficult question been asked, which has caused Clavinova to go out? That is the usual excuse reason.

Peregrina · 29/08/2021 13:38

- what happened to the mass exodus of people?

This is indeed a good question. EU immigration has been replaced by non-EU immigration. Now for the Brexiters on these threads who swear that their vote wasn't informed by immigration, that will not be a problem. For the Farage supporters, the likes of more black and brown faces is most definitely likely to be a problem and not what they voted for.

38thparallel · 29/08/2021 13:48

@HannibalHayeski

I was only wondering a few days ago why we haven't seen Clavinonothing popping up to declaim all those wonderful Brexshit wins.

Then I realised...

Gratuitously spiteful and unpleasant comment. Why are these comments allowed on the Brexit threads? The bullying is getting worse on mumsnet.
FrankieStein402 · 29/08/2021 13:51

March to June - nearly 20,000 people died in Germany compared to 3,000/4,000 in the UK over the same time period.

Is Clav pointing out here that the UK had plenty of warning of the likely impact?

FrankieStein402 · 29/08/2021 13:55

What on earth was spiteful or bullying about that comment?
Clav only ever posts about brexit benefits so naturally has been quiet as the chickens are roosting.

HannibalHayeski · 29/08/2021 14:08

Ah, Clav "goes to lunch", and 38th magically appears to "defend" it...

TheElementsSong · 29/08/2021 14:36

TruBeLeavers, simultaneously the overwhelming majority of buccaneering global freewheelers reaping their divinely-mandated Brexit successes amidst the awestruck supplication of the world, and the poor ickle bullied downtrodden oppressed minority victims of nasty overpowering Everybody.

Peregrina · 29/08/2021 15:20

If the Brexiters had really won they wouldn't need to cry about being bullied. They would instead be posting lists of benefits.

Peregrina · 29/08/2021 15:21

38th parallel is at perfect liberty to report the post.

prettybird · 29/08/2021 15:27

....but I'll screenshot it anyway, so that I know that there was nothing in it that breached MN talk guidelines Wink

DGRossetti · 29/08/2021 15:54

Seems the Tory press is turning on Boris over Afghanistan. Presumably stoked by backbenchers who are fuming that the UK has been exposed as a nobody when it comes to imperialistic reaches of power.

I caught a piece on PM last week, where the host was asking a "Tom" (didn't catch last name) who was expert in something what options the UK had to deal with the Kabul airport situation. He was refreshingly blunt:

This is what defeat looks like. When you haven't even got control of your withdrawal from a territory.

That goes for the US too. Defeat. We have been defeated. And all it took was time. Something poor people have a fuck of a lot of.
