So Grant Shapps' solution to the shortage of lorry drivers is to allow them to drive longer hours.

Leading to more accidents and deaths on the UK's roads. But Brexit is Job Done and all is well - isn't it?

That would have been Tom Tugendhat, who is relatively sane for a Tory. He does have expertise in the military field.

I think we should start keeping tally charts tracking how well Brexit is going alongside the frequency of ploppers appearing on these threads (Louise doesn't count).

@Peregrina

38th parallel is at perfect liberty to report the post.
I find there's a lot of piss'n'winders on MN. Maybe it's a blokey thing Hmm but it seems overly passive aggressive to post "reported" in a thread when it's less effort to actually fucking report a post.

Note how the real and negative consequences coming home to roost arising from the Brexit deal that BJ chose to sign to prove that he'd "got Brexit done" are somehow the EU's fault in those Express headlines Hmm: ungrateful EU workers leaving, pesky EU red tape, nasty VdL, the French.... Confused

Plenty more to link if you'd like...

As for disappearing Daily Express articles - I've just clicked on a Brexit related article in the New European from 2018 and that's disappeared as well - probably happens all the time.

HannibalHayeski · 29/08/2021 18:17

Ah, the Express.

Well, that's us all told then...

DGRossetti · 29/08/2021 18:18

So the either the UKs salmon farming industry is worth £9 Trillion or Clav is a bit dim.

I'm reminded of being told how there was litrally a paedophile in every other house in the UK. TO which my comment was we clearly need to grow more bushes.

Innumeracy is clearly a signal hallmark of Brexit and Brexiteers.

pointythings · 29/08/2021 18:18

Can we have the same good news stories from a source a little more reliable than the Express? A decent economic specialist publication would be good. Thanks.

Anyway, it's a good thing there's a Brexit bonus then. It can cover the billions of pounds we are leaving behind in Afghanistan. I wonder if the lucky Taliban (our new partners in the region, of course, so we can't be too nasty about them) will discover pallets of British banknotes ?

Thank you 38thparallel - HannibalHayeski might as well chuck cotton wall balls at me for all the effect she has, but I can see how she might deter other posters.

Is Clav pointing out here that the UK had plenty of warning of the likely impact?

I don't understand your question - I was referring to March /June 2021 - during the vaccine roll-out.

Clav only ever posts about brexit benefits so naturally has been quiet as the chickens are roosting.

No - I've been on holiday twice (UK) - besides, the Brexit board has been very quiet - thought I'd drop in from time to time instead.

Not 1.3 million people in a year though.

Not 1.3 million people in a year though.

Or even enough lorry drivers to keep supermarkets supplied.

In the name of 'sovereignty', I do wish the papers would stop glossing things over. (The BBC is no longer an impartial paper btw, afaic, maybe look at Byline or Hacked Off for the unvarnished truth).

Every democracy has a chance to re-evaluate and make necessary changes every 4yrs. Now, I know Brexit is more complicated and expensive than that, but surely we can look at some outcomes and think if this needs to be re-evaluated. It's only going to cost more as time goes on.

You are on a downward stream, you committed yourself, yes, but the closer you go, the more you realise that infact the river has a waterfall straight into ragged sharp rocks starkly sticking out. Can you not steer to the side or change your mind to stay put.

Other EU countries have been practically begging us to stay (if you have a close look at our contributions, we are not as big balls as we. think), so that embarrassment we fear so much as Brits, is actually not at their forefront. Also, when they take about decisions made in Brussels, well we are Brussels, we were at the forefront up there with France and Germany.

HannibalHayeski · 29/08/2021 19:29

I don't imagine that Fintech and Biotech (apart from being niche industries not employing hundreds of thousands) would be interested in Brexshit Britain if they weren't expecting a relaxing of the rules. Indeed, as mentioned above, our kleptocracy is already proposing "changing" the rules on data privacy, so I wouldn't be surprised to learn that ministers have already been bribed with millions been approached by biotech companies with similar relaxations in mind.

HannibalHayeski · 29/08/2021 19:32

Indeed, they'll be itching to get their hands on our "private" NHS data that the government is still trying to sell to the highest bidder.

My vodaphone bill went sky high when my DC went overseas recently, despite them not making any calls, just using data.

Nothing to do with Brexit - you have obviously misunderstood your dc's contract (how old are they?) - the extra charges don't apply before Jan 2022;

The charges around roaming in Europe only come into effect in January 2022, so no Vodafone customers will be charged more for roaming in our European roaming zones this summer or during the Christmas and New Year holidays. ...

From 11 August 2021 onwards, if you take out or upgrade/migrate to a new plan without inclusive European roaming, there will be a daily charge for roaming in our European Roaming Zone. Roaming charges start on 6 January 2022, from £1 per day.

www.vodafone.co.uk/roamingupdate22

'Free roaming' doesn't mean you get more data than your usual allowance and most contracts have a 'fair usage' limit for roaming in any case. After all the hassle and expense of travel restrictions, cancelled holidays, PCR tests for travel etc. an extra £1/£2 per day (for those customers affected) seems a small price to pay if we can ditch all the Covid expenses. The holiday exchange rate might be in our favour as well.

pointythings · 29/08/2021 20:32

Thing is though, we were told that the return of roaming charges was 'Project Fear'. Now it turns out it's Project Reality'.

Hi, still reading, from time to time. TBH I thought you'd all be ranting and raving pagefuls per day with the mess of it all. Maybe it's tiredness/resignation...

mathanxiety · 29/08/2021 20:51

Many people say they aren't opposed to immigration, they're opposed to immigrants being treated as equals once they're here. They would happily accept immigration if immigrants has a visibly worse life than they did.

I think it actually pains some people to see immigrants doing better than they are doing.

It also pains some people to see 'the working class/the poor' enjoying big fuck off TVs, dishwashers, 'fecklessly' having large families, etc.

The psychology here is the effect of the ingrained class system, the belief that there is justice behind it, and that everyone gets what they truly deserve. These assumptions are the bedrock on which some people base their entire lives and belief systems about how the world works. It really, really galls them that the undeserving and the blow-ins appear to have forgotten their place, or worse, they are blithely living their lives without reference to every assumption those resenting them hold dear.

Just checked out Botham's profile. He has zero business experience

2018/2019 -

This is not just a case of tasting the wines that go into the final blend. No, Botham is there every step of the way. From deciding what styles of wine he would like to make, to identifying the winemaker he would like to work with, to, and this is when it gets even more interesting, going in to present and pitch the wines in person to the key wine buyers he hopes will stock them...

In fact, the more you talk to Botham, the more you realise he is actually a winemaker like no other. Yes, the most experienced producers are all well travelled and venture near and far from where they make their own wines. But none of them have had a separate career that also allowed them to spend the last 40 plus years travelling thousands of miles, visiting hundreds of wine producers in most of the major wine producing countries in the New World at least.

www.the-buyer.net/people/sir-ian-botham-i-wouldnt-swap-these-wines-for-a-100-at-lords/

Botham – who is a long-time wine lover – has already been involved in wine-related projects, although always in Australia.

Most notable is his position as part owner of the Botham Merrill Willis label, which saw him and former cricketer Bob Willis joined forces with McLaren Vale winemaker Geoff Merrill as many as 19 years ago.

More recently, he held the position of brand ambassador for Hardy’s wines, itself a sponsor of the English cricket team.

www.thedrinksbusiness.com/2018/08/sir-ian-bothams-wine-range-tasted-and-rated/

July 2014 -
Legends from across cricket came together last night at Lord's to take part in a special trade dinner to mark the ground's 200 year anniversary and Hardys brand sponsorship of English cricket.

harpers.co.uk/news/fullstory.php/aid/15607/Botham,_Atherton_and_Gooch_lead_Lord_s_cricket_celebration_with_Hardys_wine.html

The UK has a lot of beer, gin and whisky producers who might find his contacts in Australia very useful as well.

The annoying thing about HS2 is that it is deemed to be "national infrastructure" so isn't included in the Barnet Formula

24 July 2021 -

Unlike Scotland and Northern Ireland, Wales currently stands to receive no proportional payout via the Barnett formula as High Speed 2 (HS2) is seen as delivering benefits to both ‘England and Wales’.

Hint - not the blue ones.
