So Grant Shapps' solution to the shortage of lorry drivers is to allow them to drive longer hours.

Leading to more accidents and deaths on the UK's roads. But Brexit is Job Done and all is well - isn't it?

@Itsthepitstoo

Fishing fiasco Vaccines fiasco Car manufactures closing in the UK Supermarket shortages No fruit pickers Top Brexit businessmen packing up their UK offices for oversea (Dison etc) Shortages at Nandos, KFC, Greggs etc EU friends that have lived here for ages, had to apply for status even though their kids are born here Increase in postal prices to EU etc. My vodaphone bill went sky high when my DC went overseas recently, despite them not making any calls, just using data.

Sorry to not have read the full thread, but I am still to see the advantages on Brexit. So that's it, that's my post as a fed up UK resident.

You missed the shift in narrative.

We're getting all of those things because that's what we voted for.

Not point saying it isn't.

Because it is.

You have to admire the architects of Brexit. They've engineered it perfectly so now those that were conned daren't point it out but have ot suck it up.

Peregrina · 27/08/2021 14:40

We voted repeatedly apparently.

Peregrina · 27/08/2021 16:49

The Government spokesperson said: “The British people repeatedly voted to end free movement and take back control of our immigration system and employers should invest in our domestic workforce instead of relying on labour from abroad.”

So clearly Brexit was about immigration despite the Brexiters on these threads swearing blind that it wasn't.

DrBlackbird · 27/08/2021 19:15

@pointythings

They can't tinker very much because they need to maintain data flows between us and the EU. So whatever it is will be cosmetic and expensive - sort of a Brexit Botox GDPR.
I thought Dowden who thinks govt money is his personal stash enabling him to call the shots was saying he was going for ‘light touch’ data regulation i.e. allowing data grab by firms?

For example, no more pop ups asking us to confirm our cookie choices thereby allowing the company access to every data point on every device we own.

quiteathome · 27/08/2021 19:22

It is rubbish. I was chatting to a Brexit voter. She basically said Brexit shortages are a good thing as she did not have things when she was growing up, so it does us all good to go without. And then started talking about it being good for people to lose weight or something. (I managed to stay quiet. I need the work.)

Hopefully she does not need a blood test soon as there is a shortage of vials for blood tests.

DrBlackbird · 27/08/2021 19:24

Come on. We all know the real reason for any changes to data privacy laws. And it’s not to pursue a new era of data-driven growth and innovation

It’s another step towards an authoritarian state being able to collect our data without impunity to control the recalcitrant public. Same drift as restricting the press, outlawing protests, and undermining the judiciary. Which can all be added to Itsthepitstoo’s list but less visible than the others.

pointythings · 27/08/2021 19:51

I see this mindset so often in the UK, and especially among right wing voters. It is less important to them that they should fare better from the consequences of their vote; what really matters is that they want to see other people fare worse. They take a malevolent delight in seeing other people lose out, even though there is no improvement to their lives. I find it utterly baffling.

"It is not enough to win. Others must lose."

The incredibly prescient Gore Vidal, I believe.

Peregrina · 27/08/2021 22:00

will be requiring every single stem of cut flowers to have a phytosanitary certificate and a plant passport.

Which will once again be the EU bullying us. When will the Brexiters wake up and take Johnson and cronies to task for not negotiating the good deal they were promised? (OK don't tell me, such a deal wasn't possible.. the Brexiters thought it was.)

DGRossetti · 28/08/2021 08:25

(OK don't tell me, such a deal wasn't possible.. the Brexiters thought it was.)

It was a good enough deal for the Dysons and Martins of this world though. That's all that matters.

Brexit is like a trades union being persuaded to forgo a payrise in order to buy the chairman a Rolls Royce.

Last week my local Asda was pretty Soviet. Hardly anything there. (Glad I bulk bought pine nuts when they had some.)

I see a lot of that around the immigration debate. Many people say they aren't opposed to immigration, they're opposed to immigrants being treated as equals once they're here. They would happily accept immigration if immigrants has a visibly worse life than they did.
Peregrina · 28/08/2021 12:17

I know one who is of the opinion "We managed during the War". She herself was a child, so wouldn't have born the brunt of 'managing' to make rations stretch or be sick with worry about relatives fighting overseas and what happened to them.

But I digress - managing because you are fighting an evil regime is not the same as having to manage because a bunch of greedy Tories had a fight and brought Brexit about.

AuldAlliance · 28/08/2021 13:06

I hate that petty mindset of "as long as others are miserable"...

In other news, clumsy, EU-constrained France has vaccinated more people than the nimble UK and began quietly evacuating people from Kabul in May, based on the intelligence that the Afghan army was likely to be overwhelmed fairly soon.

HarrietPierce · 28/08/2021 14:18

"In other news, clumsy, EU-constrained France has vaccinated more people than the nimble UK"

And that includes age 12 upwards !

And of course the BeLeavers have gone quiet on the vaccination issue, when we still have some way to go with those adults that haven't been vaccinated and offering vaccines to teenagers.

quiteathome · 28/08/2021 17:37

Home Bargains was looking quite empty of stock today. I obviously hang out in all the quality places. Grin

I am hoping that vaccine approval for over 12s goes ahead soon. DC1 has decided to have it if offered. I am just hoping for a relatively disruption free year.

DGRossetti · 28/08/2021 17:52

Be interested to know if the shift to using smaller (non HGV licence needed) lorries I heard about recently is a kick in the 'nads for the UKs clean air obligations ?

Mind you, that said, I was also fascinated to hear the Morrisons boss state that one measure they are taking to address the driver shortage is to fill lorries up a bit more. Which begs the question how many HGVs are running less than full ?

Heatherjayne1972 · 28/08/2021 22:23

My partner is a lorry driver
Lots of drivers left because they weren’t made to feel welcome here, then Covid hit and they were stranded unemployed or recalled and didn’t want to or couldn’t continue driving.
Lorries don’t run empty. They just don’t
So how can they be filled up
More
Also our lovely government have said they can work 11 hours not 9 BUT that doesn’t count abroad ( lots go out and back to Europe several times a week) so if they go over hours they can and will get fined on the continent therefore making the whole was 9 hours now 11 hours thing pretty pointless for many of them

Yes, what happened to the "Job Done!" ejaculator?
Peregrina · 29/08/2021 09:25

I read in Saturday's paper that Malta, Portugal and Denmark have vaccinated a greater percentage of adults than the UK. Who would have thought that this was possible while in the EU?

Peregrina · 29/08/2021 09:29

Similarly, I am getting fed up of Tory spokesmen saying that Labour shortages should be overcome by training more British staff. In what way did the EU stop employers training them?

HesterThrale · 29/08/2021 09:44

I feel sorry for pubs and restaurants trying to recover after lockdown, and now battling with staff and food shortages. A triple whammy.

This well-known restaurant had a much-reduced menu because the expert chefs that they’d trained had returned to the EU.

I’m guessing that EU workers who went home to wait out the pandemic will likely not return. We just seem an unwelcoming country right now.
