I'm getting seriously ticked off day by day by the UK government wanting X or Y or Z which were and are benefits of actually being part of the EU but not wanting to be part of the EU.

Today on BBC Breakfast in the news it's easier travel movement within the EU. Digital certificates to prove that you've been vaccinated has goes live today for all EU countries and lo and behold the UK wants it's piece of the pie and to be part of the easier travel movements.

Well....no. You left the EU. You're not part of it anymore. You don't get to enjoy the benefits of easier travel just because...you join the other countries that are not part of the EU and take your place in the queue.

Or

You rejoin the EU and play your part in these decisions and be a grown up.

It's just sooooo frustrating.

@m0therofdragons

Erm, so eu doesn’t want uk holiday makers? We have an app that clearly shows if you’re vaccinated but the eu want a more consistent, easy to read certificate. Makes sense so why wouldn’t other countries look to get on board? We’re not eu but still in Europe the continent (as are other countries). (FYI I voted remain but that hasn’t happened, that didn’t mean we never want to speak to any eu countries ever again)
Not all EU countries are all that bothered about UK holiday makers, no.

I don't have that app, what is it called?

@thecatsatonthewall - well it looks like a deal on covid passports is close to being agreed so I guess there has been some talking!

Yes there is but of little help to the tourists denied entry to Malta... why didn't we join their scheme at the start? saving all this heart ache.

The default position of this government is the answer is NO, now what is the question?

chickenyhead · 01/07/2021 09:35

Fair enough

Horizons83 · 01/07/2021 09:44

@VanGoghsDog The NHS App shows your vaccine status (not the Covid app, different thing)

www.nhs.uk/nhs-app/

Inastatus · 01/07/2021 10:00

@thecatsatonthewall - more fool the tourists trying to travel to Malta! Their difficulties were more down to Covid than Brexit! We are still completing our vaccination programme in the UK and travel is still prohibited to many countries and yet you are moaning that a vaccine passport scheme is not yet up and running!

AnoymousCoward · 01/07/2021 10:03

And there we have it @Lesartisansetlessansculottes
France and Germany aren't bothered about tourists from UK, so the economies of Greece, Spain, Portugal and Italy can go hang.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 01/07/2021 10:05

People who didn't vote, tacitly agreed to accept the result whichever way it went. You don't get to include them in the people who didn't vote for Brexit - they didn't vote to remain either!
And as for counting children who were too young to vote - are you going to use that for every general election result too if you don't like the outcome?

@zoemum2006

What I hate is that it was sold as 'staying the the single market/ everybody keeping their rights/ no downsides'.

After the referendum is was 'of course you're going to lose X,Y,Z everybody knew that'.

It's been such a con job and it's so frustrating they were allowed to get away with it because they were honouring the 'will of the people' when all the pre-referendum talk didn't even vaguely resemble what's happened.

Agree

11 Jun 16 UKIP says The European Union will start disintegrating after Italians pick the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement candidate as mayor of Rome on June 19

26 Jun 16 Farage says the Brexit bombshell will bring the whole EU crashing down

1 Jul 21 above poster the corrupt, anti-democratic EU will not exist in ten years

Sho thing. Whatevs.

BungleandGeorge · 01/07/2021 10:24

It’s the responsibility of every government to negotiate and campaign for the best deal for their own citizens. Of course the UK should be asking for all of this! The same is true of all the EU countries. It seems they are not united as some depend heavily on UK tourism. I’ll just do whatever I’m told if I want to visit the EU. Given it’s pretty cheap to travel to the Far East on holiday I might well do that instead if it’s easier. I don’t really think either side should be blinded by principle and it would probably be in both best interests overall to co-operate

Oh, I've never managed to make that work.

Funnily enough, I have a hospital appointment tomorrow and they've just rung me to go through some details and they asked if I had been vaccinated, so I'm not convinced they are very joined up!

Bionicname · 01/07/2021 10:33

What pisses me off most is that the impact of all this hassle, extra bureaucracy and cost is disproportionately felt by people who didn’t even get a say in the referendum - literally millions of EU citizens who are UK residents, including their (often British) family and friends. Also Brits who have been living in continental Europe for a long time.

Was it? As far as I saw amongst my friends and peers we were all very clear exactly what we'd end up losing.

And low and behold. Now we have to listen to all those that voted to leave, that ignored the rounded arguments moan about all the things they fucking took from us.

JustHavinABreak · 01/07/2021 10:47

@LarryTheLurker

Can't believe I'm feeding the trolls, but what staggering arrogance. You really are what gives the UK a bad name. The world has moved on and it's not UK-centric. The Empire folded. Thankfully you're not representative of the other lovely posters on here who were capable of seeing the bigger picture and the UK's role in the EU and the global community as a whole. Come back to us in a few years and tell us how great Brexit has been for the UK. After all, it's been a rip-roaring success so far Confused Grin

People do realise that the "NHS App" is only for England ? HmmConfused

But typical of some Brexiters' attitudes as as long as England is "OK" which it's not Hmm then the other constituent countries of the UK, which didn't vote to leave, can go to fuck Angry ....and that includes NI which voted to Remain because they understood the consequences and risk to the peace process.

But the talk did include all that - it was just dismissed as Project Fear.

It’s like telling your gym you’re cancelling your membership but you still want to use the pool.
