I'm getting seriously ticked off day by day by the UK government wanting X or Y or Z which were and are benefits of actually being part of the EU but not wanting to be part of the EU.

Today on BBC Breakfast in the news it's easier travel movement within the EU. Digital certificates to prove that you've been vaccinated has goes live today for all EU countries and lo and behold the UK wants it's piece of the pie and to be part of the easier travel movements.

Well....no. You left the EU. You're not part of it anymore. You don't get to enjoy the benefits of easier travel just because...you join the other countries that are not part of the EU and take your place in the queue.

Or

You rejoin the EU and play your part in these decisions and be a grown up.

It's just sooooo frustrating.

You have to question what a Minor Inconvenience is. Civil war breaking out again in NI may not affect people much in England, but in NI itself it is most certainly not minor.

Viviennemary · 04/07/2021 10:32

Another reason I voted out. You are ignorant because you don't agree with me. Hmm. Didn't work for Labour and it doesn't work for this either.

Sometimesonly · 04/07/2021 10:33

@tal45 If you look at the rates rather than the doses (which makes more sense as it takes into account population size) you will see that the UK is not top. In any case, I was not criticising the UK which we know has done well, just pointing out that it makes no sense to suggest that Europe has done badly when there is such a range of results and some countries have done better than the UK.

Sometimesonly · 04/07/2021 10:34

@Viviennemary The EU is an economic union not a petulant lover, I think you might be a bit confused here.

Viviennemary · 04/07/2021 10:35

Do they realise that. Sometimes I wonder.

Sometimesonly · 04/07/2021 10:37

Who is they???

Grin Who mentioned labour??
Sometimesonly · 04/07/2021 10:39

The EU is basically a club which helps its members. The UK is not a member so why should it be taken into account at all?

ssd · 04/07/2021 10:43

Because people like viviennemary think they should have it both ways. And can't understand why they can't.

foxandcubs · 04/07/2021 10:51

I won't be taking my holiday in the EU either. Petulant, resentful, bad tempered. Macron and Merkel will be gone soon. 👍
Only Malta and Iceland have higher vaccination rates than the UK and they have tiny populations.
👏🇬🇧😄

Peregrina · 04/07/2021 11:09

Sorry Leavers - don't you think it's time to move on from being obsessed with what the EU does or does not do?

I am glad that it took a public outcry last week, to get rid of an incompetent hypocritical Health Secretary, who ought to have been sacked immediately by the lazy PM that we have.

ssd · 04/07/2021 11:55

Yep. Now brexit isn't working out the way they were promised , leavers are resorting to blaming "Petulant, resentful, bad tempered Macron and Merkel"

As i said before, I'd find it funny if it wasn't so serious.

Peregrina · 04/07/2021 12:13

Isn't it a pity that the keen Brexiters didn't show as much interest in the EU five years ago?

It has been known for months that Merkel would be standing down this year. I admit, Macron's lack of success in the Regional elections was probably worse than he expected.

I just laugh at the thought of them cutting off their noses to spite their faces and refuse to visit EU countries - so no visits to some great European capitals like Paris or Rome or centres of culture like Florence.

prettybird · 04/07/2021 13:09

The positive in France is that Le Pen hasn't made the inroads that she thought she would Shock: the French have a tendency to do their protest votes in the 1st round and then vote with their heads in the 2nd round Smile

I think Macron is suffering from a) being in power when unpopular things needed to be done Sad because of Covid exacerbated by b) not having the grass roots infrastructure to get out there and explain/garner support.

But I'll admit that I've not really been following French politics in recent years Blush

foxandcubs · 04/07/2021 13:11

I've travelled widely across Europe and further so visited all the centres of culture and lived in a few of them. No pain here from not visiting them again.

bellinisurge · 04/07/2021 14:05

At this point, in fact, several points ago, I decided they can go fuck themselves.

Lonel · 04/07/2021 14:07

Absolutely

I'm all right Jack

LookItsMeAgain · 04/07/2021 16:24

@Viviennemary

If the EU are going to be awkward two can play at that game. I won't be taking my holiday in an EU country any time soon and avoid buying goods from the EU when I can. It's my small protest against their horrible behaviour. They are like a scorned spouse. Pathetic. More glad than ever I voted out.
So you're going to behave like the other scorned spouse in this divorce...brings to mind this wonderful scene from the ever funny Foil Arms and Hog:

...the economies of Greece, Spain, Portugal and Italy can go hang.

@AnoymousCoward
Do you seriously believe that the economies of four European states depend on British tourism?

Subtracting UK visitors, Portugal still had a healthy 24,996,514 visitors in 2019 (pre covid)

For Spain, the figure is 64,270,434. Spain is the second most visited country in the world.

Italy - 59,413,321 without UK tourists. (2018 figs)

For Greece - 27,849,052 tourists if you don't count Brits, in 2019.

mathanxiety · 04/07/2021 20:08

@BungleandGeorge

It’s the responsibility of every government to negotiate and campaign for the best deal for their own citizens. Of course the UK should be asking for all of this!

The UK had the chance to have all of this. Every single detail of it. And all the rest of the benefits of EU membership (trade, freedom of movement, etc).

Now the government responsible for taking it all away from its own citizens - they weren't forced to do it, they pursued this policy stubbornly and in the face of serious and persistent criticism - is doing the responsible thing by asking for it back?

The phrase "What The Actual Fuck?" was made for moments like this.

mathanxiety · 04/07/2021 20:18

@ILoveAllRainbowsx

Maybe start another thread about the far right?

This one is about another topic altogether.

HarrietPierce · 04/07/2021 20:23

Viviennemary
"Do they realise that. Sometimes I wonder."

Don't they know who we are? English exceptionalism.

mathanxiety · 04/07/2021 20:29

But if the EU makes travel in the future too much of a pita, UK citizens will find somewhere else to go. Some other countries will fill the gap.

Cheaply, good weather pretty much guaranteed, not requiring a visa, not needing multiple vaccinations, and not involving a long plane trip?

To somewhere safe?

I'm looking at a globe and coming up with no ideas.
