Because there doesn't seem to be a new thread yet. I'm no RTB or any of you other experts, but these threads need to keep going.

Give me a couple weeks and I'll be able to post cat placemarks!

I thought they stopped fishing and now the season has ended? rather than we have all gone and bought clams.

Govt gave the industry 23million.

Peregrina · 20/06/2021 09:20

Are we surprised? As a result of the G7 influx the Delta variant is now spreading rapidly in Cornwall.

borntobequiet · 20/06/2021 09:32

The Catholic establishment in the US still has a lot of its own demons to exorcise. Catholic adherence to Church teaching on issues such as contraception and termination of pregnancy (especially on termination in exceptional circumstances such as incest and rape) has been flexible for decades now, and relatively few Catholics would extend that teaching to those outside their own faith - at least, as a lapsed Catholic with many relatives in the USA, that’s my understanding.
Taking pot shots at a demonstrably good family man and staunch Catholic like Biden probably won’t go down too well.

I see Dido wants rid of the foreigners that come over here & work to prop up our NHS!

Good luck to all those boomers in a few years time getting hospital treatment or needing looked after in a care home!

pointythings · 20/06/2021 19:15

Well, it's a great idea in principle. So let's wait and see if she proposes increasing the number of medical training places - doubling would probably be good. She will also be proposing to fully reinstate the nursing bursary at its previous level and abolishing tuition fees for nurses training - won't she?

Of course the big problem is all these tourists coming here, contracting CV and bringing it back to their communities, nothing against Bolton but it is not a holiday destination.

Johnson supporters say that it is nothing to do with G7 but half term visitors - which is bollocks otherwise it would have started all over Cornwall inc places like Newquay and in Devon Torbay - normally far more popular than St Ives.

Johnson the Idiot strikes again! incidentally, BBC breakfast today did an excellent report on the Govt's failings over the Delta variant.

Already happening. Social care in the community is on its knees and the NHS has 5.3m waiting for elective surgery.

What my DD (OT) tells me about under funding and staff shortages in the NHS is beyond frightening.

The singer or the waste of space ?

I wonder how popular a classically themed name like Dido is in England ?

Peregrina · 20/06/2021 19:30

Dido isn't her real name, is it? Isn't she Diana or something? But these upper class types go in for silly nicknames like Tiggy and Bunty and such like.

Eve · 20/06/2021 19:35

Of course she will pointythings, all those extra nurses & doctors will fill the 40 new hospitals Boris is building!

Fnib · 20/06/2021 20:44

Why are we referring to 'boomers' here? I feel an undercurrent of 'they'll get what they voted for '.
My loathing of the current need to stick everybody in a box with a label on it aside, the assumption that people of a certain age voted for brexit is very ageist.

Peregrina · 20/06/2021 20:52

'Boomers' is a misnaming anyway. In the UK my parents and others of their generation, referred to 'the bulge' of babies born late 1944 to about 1950. By the time I was born in 51 it was considered to be over. The demographics in America where the boomer term originates, was quite different.

And no, we don't all vote for Brexit, and we haven't all become more conservative as we have got older.

She has been head of NHS Improvement since 2017, so has made a start already.
Peregrina · 20/06/2021 20:58

Could we ask what sort of improvements have we seen in the NHS since 2017?

DGRossetti · 20/06/2021 21:18

My schooldays saw mobile classrooms plus extensions and repurposing of school space (our primary & middle schools had no kitchens and meals were bussed in from another school). Condemned outbuilt classrooms were kept in service.

All of which had disappeared when my 6 year younger brother went through the same schools ....

That was the boomer era ...

Peregrina · 20/06/2021 21:27

This made me laugh.

Westminstenders: Put Your Faith In The Home Office
Peregrina · 20/06/2021 21:29

DH and I both benefitted from new primary schools, which were built to accommodate the 'bulge' but it took a while to get the programme going.

Peregrina · 20/06/2021 21:39

this chart very nicely illustrates the point I was making - there was the post war 'bulge' which was over by 1950 There was then a late 60s peak. So the easy tag of 'boomer' really isn't appropriate.

Why was there a late 60s peak? I suspect in part because then people married much earlier and it was the original 'bulge' generation having children.

TheHateIsNotGood · 20/06/2021 22:03

And of course much wider access to Grammars and free Uni/Colleges for the capable and motivated wc/low income people.

I only came across the premise as a mature degree student in 2001 that mostly mc kids got into Grammars because they were tutored - not in my day (born in 62).

Although mc I got in without any tutoring and as an ex-pat that had their primary/elementary education from the Californian State School System; I knew then and now plenty of wc people that passed the 11+ but their Parents wouldn't let them go to the 'Snob's School', notably I only know males this happened to, not so much to Girls. And at least 1 girl I went to Grammar with was categorically told by everyone that she would never pass the 11+. She did.

Nowadays, the Opportunities that existed for education, jobs and social mobility (if you wanted to move up or down) in my earlier days just don't exist now. Although looking backwards could be a hindrance to moving forwards I do think there are things that worked in the past and we could do well to utilize them now.

pointythings · 20/06/2021 22:20

I sat the 11+ and passed it, would have gone to grammar school in 1979 only my parents moved back to Holland after my dad's secondment ended. Dsis and I would both have thrived in grammar but are both glad we ended up going through the Dutch system instead - no bloody uniforms, for one!

This “boomer”, her siblings, cousins and friends of a similar age all voted Remain and have spent their personal and professional lives looking out for and looking after the younger generation. Pack in the ageist nonsense.

TheHateIsNotGood · 20/06/2021 22:42

You wouldn't have got into the Grammar I went to pointy as it was phased out, no more intake after Sept '75. Although the Boy's Grammar has stayed open as a Private School, eventually admitting some Girls who could afford it.

So not only was educational equality trashed but a fair bit of sex/gender equality too.

You and your sister did well to go Dutch.
