Be interesting to see how happy Boris and the boys are to allow natural capitalism to take it's course and drive wages up. After all, isn't that the religion of free markets the Tories sold their souls for ?

(.nb. "free market" is not an adjective and a noun, but a verb and an object. And like all verbs in English it takes the irregular form depending on the social strate of the speaker ...)

GaspodeWonderCat · 18/05/2021 07:51

You know what they're singing in Brussels ?

Frosty the no-man ...

Because he says NO or doesn't know? (Gets coat ...)

mrslaughan · 18/05/2021 07:51

I am not quite sure why it's the responsibility of the EU to take into account the concerns of unionists - who are no longer citizens of the EU. Surely that's the responsibility of Westminster when they enter into agreements with other countries or trade blocs

FrankieStein402 · 18/05/2021 08:07

Frosty the no-man ...

Frost 'hopes' EU will not retaliate if UK suspends NIP

Because there's no hope for the incompetent oaf?

or the UK economy given what this report says is needed:
UK economy may equate to that of Italy

I won't hold my breath for the c&p report that predicts UK economy may do better than France/Germany/whatever

borntobequiet · 18/05/2021 08:26

At least we won’t be overrun by illegal au pairs. Goodness me, that would be dreadful.

yellowspanner · 18/05/2021 08:32

Mrslaughan, I have no issue with arguments and counter arguments. It is the nasty name calling that is bullying and I am not accusing you of doing so.

CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 18/05/2021 08:45

Interesting report warning of risk of UK decline in next decade - flags that UK may end decade with GDP per capita closer to Italy than Germany, due in part to challenges of Brexit on.ft.com/3eVLqY9

Oh, and govt apparently split about the Aus deal - will they throw our farmers under the bus by granting tariff free imports ...on.ft.com/3bRXPdR

Britannia unchained! Hmm

yellowspanner · 18/05/2021 08:55

Pointythings, why would anyone trust what they read in the Guardian?

pointythings · 18/05/2021 09:01

@yellowspanner

Pointythings, why would anyone trust what they read in the Guardian?
Well, that's not a cheap shot at all. Are you saying that this actually didn't happen? Because it isn't just discussed in the Guardian, it's everywhere. Except of course in the right wing press, which is clearly without any kind of bias at all.

Am I bullying you when I say that you appear to be somewhat selective in what you address? Do you really believe that the people mentioned in the article I referenced are lying, and that the Home Office has not made any serious errors generated by the hostile environment? How much incompetence are you prepared to tolerate in the name of getting rid of foreigners?

jasjas1973 · 18/05/2021 09:15

@yellowspanner

Jasjas, you have accepted that the people in question were in the UK illegally. They should be deported. If they were from an unsafe country they could stay here as refugees. They clearly were not refugees so they can be deported back to the country where they hold citizenship.
Hang on, just because you come from a unsafe country, that matters not a jot, you need to prove you would be in harms way if returned.

So someone takes a dingy from France to UK, no papers, claims to be Syrian, cannot prove they would be in danger if returned, France wont accept them back... what do you propose to do with this person?

Lets say they are from Zimbabwe, claim to be gay & would be killed if returned... would you let them stay or deport them? what if Zim refuses to accept them?

A women sold into prostitution, from eastern europe, here illegally, deport her, where she will be captured by the gang that traficked her... would you send her back too? she is an illegal after all.

You appear to have a very simplistic way of looking at failed asylum seekers or illegal imigrants.

TheElementsSong · 18/05/2021 09:32

This thread is doing really important work in validating the True BeLeavers' simultaneous World-Dominator-cum-Universal-Victim narrative.

If we all fell silent, or merely reverted to chanting paeans to BlowJohnson, despite the demands we do so, only half the narrative would be fulfilled. And that wouldn't do at all.

borntobequiet · 18/05/2021 09:36

why would anyone trust what they read in the Guardian?

Why would anyone trust what they read anywhere? These threads are worth following at least in part because contributors generally exercise their critical faculties and cross check information and do the best they can to differentiate between opinion and fact. This results in it being easy to see the contrast when someone doesn’t.
We are all biased to some degree, but on here try to at least be aware of our bias and not let it affect our thinking disproportionately.

borntobequiet · 18/05/2021 09:37

reverted to chanting paeans to BlowJohnson

I try very hard to avoid this.

wewereliars · 18/05/2021 10:25

I don't understand a mindset which wails on about being bullied when people are literally having their lives and livelihoods destroyed by badly thought out and vicious policies. Brexit loons banging on about the sovereignty of parliament and then supporting the proroguing of parliament should have been the low point, but it looks as though we have a lot furter to sink. And the ignorant and hard of thinking will still cheer it on, until it comes to their door. When it will all be far too late. We could almost say "First they came for the refugees, the most desperate and vulnerable people on earth, but I am not a refugee so fuck them.."

Paralithic · 18/05/2021 10:31

@yellowspanner

Pointythings, why would anyone trust what they read in the Guardian?
Are you calling the beloved Boris’s sister-in-law a liar? Shock
TatianaBis · 18/05/2021 10:34

@yellowspanner

Pointythings, why would anyone trust what they read in the Guardian?
Because the paper has a journalistic integrity that is missing in the Murdoch owned Times and the Barclay brothers owned Telegraph as it’s not used as a tool to further the political and economic goals of its owners. The Scott Trust, which owns the Guardian, exists to guarantee its editorial independence.

From the friends of mine who work in the media - Times and Telegraph stories have to be fact checked as much as the tabloids.

AuldAlliance · 18/05/2021 10:35

We've got to "fake news!" now. And so it goes...

DGRossetti · 18/05/2021 13:43

@GaspodeWonderCat

You know what they're singing in Brussels ?

Frosty the no-man ...

Because he says NO or doesn't know? (Gets coat ...)

I've known people whose second language is English get puns and wordplay that whistles over native speakers heads.

You would be amazed at how up your own arse being a monoglot can make you about your own language.

yellowspanner · 18/05/2021 13:44

Pointythings, I simply said "why would anybody believe what they read in the Guardian". I believe it is very left wing, biased, anti Government and very anti Brexit.

pointythings · 18/05/2021 13:53

@yellowspanner

Pointythings, I simply said "why would anybody believe what they read in the Guardian". I believe it is very left wing, biased, anti Government and very anti Brexit.
And I simply asked why you would assume that the Guardian would report something that is blatantly untrue. I ask you again: do you think that these letters were not sent out to British citizens? Do you believe that the people mentioned in the Guardian and across Twitter are lying? Do you believe that the Home Office makes no mistakes (cough Windrush cough) and takes no responsibility when they do make mistakes?

Also all newspapers are biased. Even the right wing ones that suit your agenda.

HarrietPierce · 18/05/2021 13:55

"Pointythings, I simply said "why would anybody believe what they read in the Guardian". I believe it is very left wing, biased, anti Government and very anti Brexit."

Why would anybody believe what they read in the Daily Mail or Daily Telegraph which is very right wing biased, pro this corrupt Government and very pro an increasingly disastrous Brexit ?

52andblue · 18/05/2021 14:02

PMK.

prettybird · 18/05/2021 14:17

I know that the majority on here understand the relevance and importance of these simple words, attributed to Pastor Niemöller.

But to mix analogies, there are none so blind as those that will not see, so it's worth repeating them if only for the lurkers HmmConfused

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew

Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

Sad
TheElementsSong · 18/05/2021 14:20

So according to True BeLeavers, if any source has expressed "political" views, they're to be tarred as biased untrustworthy liars. Oh wait, that's not right - if any source has expressed UnBeLeaving political views, only then are they tarred as biased untrustworthy liars.

wewereliars · 18/05/2021 14:23

Thank you Prettybird, simple, and heartbreaking. And sadly now so relevant.
