why would anybody believe what they read in the Guardian

Attacking the messenger.

jasjas1973 · 18/05/2021 14:33

@yellowspanner

Pointythings, I simply said "why would anybody believe what they read in the Guardian". I believe it is very left wing, biased, anti Government and very anti Brexit.
Have you ever read it? Not just one article but a few ones over a number of days.

Because if you haven't, where have you formed such an opinion?

To call the Guardian "Very left wing" shows you don't really know what being Very left wing means, if you did, you wouldn't apply that to this paper.

Eve · 18/05/2021 14:34

@TheElementsSong

so true - maybe some posters should spend time researching lying press and come back explain how there are no parallels.

yellowspanner · 18/05/2021 14:57

Prettybird, I know the poem well. However our Government are not going after anyone. People who are in the country illegally are committing a crime. I think the Government is right to deport them.
In Nazi Germany the people they "came for" were innocent citizens.
There is no comparison other than in your mind.
And for the record I used to read the Guardian daily, but not anymore. I could not stomach its anti Government, pro EU bias.

yellowspanner · 18/05/2021 15:00

Frankie, I am not attacking the messenger . In fact I am not attacking anyone or anything. Someone earlier said that I should not believe the Times or Telegraph. Someone else quoted an article about the HO in the Guardian.
Saying I don't believe what is written in the Guardian is hardly attacking it.

HarrietPierce · 18/05/2021 15:07

The Daily Mail was mentioned not The Times, and The Financial Times definitely sees the follies of Brexit.

pointythings · 18/05/2021 15:13

yellowspanner did you also not believe what was written in The Guardian when they started investigating the Windrush scandal?

prettybird · 18/05/2021 15:19

I didn't say who I was aiming that poem at Hmm except maybe lurkers I just said it was worth repeating the poem.

But those that can't see the relevance, in the light of letters to people who are legitimately in this country and coming so soon after the Windrush scandal, where people's lives were ruined after the Home Office's erroneous application of the "hostile environment".....well, I have no words Sad

I could easily have been one of those affected by the Windrush scandal as I arrived in the UK aged 3 in 1964 from a Commonwealth country, on my mother's passport. But fortunately, we were (are Wink) a middle class family who liked to travel, so as soon as we could, we formally naturalised and I have a British passport Smile. Heaven knows where my original naturalisation certificate is though Shock

Peregrina · 18/05/2021 15:24

Some of the people who the HO has been sending letters to were naturalised as British years ago, and have spent their working lives here and paid taxes. But apparently it can't be true because we havent read it in the Daily Mail.

Peregrina · 18/05/2021 15:31

yellowspanner you are exactly the sort of person who could end up getting a rude awakening. The likes of Johnson cheats and lies to those he has a relationship with. The first people he betrayed with his Brexit deal were ardent Leave supporting fishermen. Don't kid yourself that he or his cronies would have any loyalty to you, if it was expedient to betray you.

borntobequiet · 18/05/2021 16:01

Talking about people betrayed by Brexit - Farming Today, worries about sufficiency of fruit pickers.
www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000w4q7

Also measuring the happiness of a cow.

(Amazing how those sectors and areas keenest to leave are copping the consequences the most. Reports today about how our own farmers may be disadvantaged by potential Australian trade deal (World at One I think).)

AuldAlliance · 18/05/2021 16:11

Saying I don't believe what is written in the Guardian is hardly attacking it.
This is one of the most disingenuous posts ever.
If accusing a newspaper of lying is not attacking it, what is it?

Unless you do not actually believe that the Windrush scandal occurred, despite all the evidence to the contrary, I fail to see how you can presume that the HO is a reliable judge of who is and is not in the UK illegally.

Here's a Tory MP's view, in The Times (perhaps they appear credible sources to you?):
www.thetimes.co.uk/article/priti-patel-risks-forgetting-the-lessons-of-windrush-zltndkhs0

prettybird · 18/05/2021 16:29

Would the Windrush Scandal even have come to light (I can't say "been addressed" given the failure to disperse the compensation that the Government claimed to have made available Sad) if it hadn't been for the Guardian's investigative journalism? ConfusedAngry

Or is it better that the Home Office could have continued to claim that they were dealing decisively and firmly with "illegal immigration" by deporting/not letting back in/stopping benefits to those who couldn't prove, through no fault of their own, that they were here legitimately Hmm

After all, why should anyone believe a "far left" newspaper? Confused They're so obviously biased Hmm The Home Office doesn't make mistakes Hmm

pointythings · 18/05/2021 16:33

prettybird, stop it with the facts and reason. That's bullying.

prettybird · 18/05/2021 16:47

I suppose I do actually bother reading yellowspanner's posts, which is a form of compliment as at least he or she is contributing some independent thought and analysis even if I disagree with almost all of it Wink

Unlike CnPova, whose CnPs I scroll past Wink

jasjas1973 · 18/05/2021 16:48

And for the record I used to read the Guardian daily, but not anymore. I could not stomach its anti Government, pro EU bias

Given your political views, why did you read the Guardian?
Seems a very odd choice.

wewereliars · 18/05/2021 16:54

Fun fact, Amelia Gentleman broke the Windrush story, and is an outstanding investigative journalist. She is married to Jo Johnson, brother to Alexander de Piffle. AKA Boris

Maybe order this Yellowspanner .

yellowspanner · 18/05/2021 16:59

I read the Guardian because I like to be aware of all sides of an argument. If I only read what I agreed with I would exist in an echo chamber and that is not a good idea. This doesn't mean I agree with everything I read or hear. It is also why I come on here.

prettybird · 18/05/2021 17:00

Stop with the fun facts Wink After all why should anyone read or believe a very left wing, biased, anti Government and very anti Brexit newspaper?Confused
wewereliars · 18/05/2021 17:02
Grin
prettybird · 18/05/2021 17:05

Another fun fact that I learnt from ds (who was writing a Uni essay on whether populism and disinformation has increased or deceased trust in legacy media as part of his Digital Politics option) is that the
far-right in Germany has a tradition of calling the press “the lying press”.

TatianaBis · 18/05/2021 17:16

Amelia also made Jo choose between Boris and her before he resigned. He chose wisely.

wewereliars · 18/05/2021 17:16

That reminds me that when Trump got into the White House, I heard a radio package from some far right US nut job, practically salivating and talking about going after the lugenpresse, (umlaut over the u)

It was chilling, very redolent of Nazi rallies.

I think Steve Banon had been to Germany and picked up a lot of the tactics etc from the far right. This became " fake news" which as we know worked very well for Trump.

Clavinova · 18/05/2021 17:20

TatianaBis
Yes it’s really surprising there are different versions of a story in the media. hmm
They’re either intentionally breaking the rules - ie scam, or not.
Which is it?

Who knows?
But as you have extolled the virtues of the Guardian - I would point out that there is definitely a hint of scepticism in their article;

He wanted to explain what he called his “honest mistake” to the authorities but never got the chance as Lomartire was expelled.

I also note that Guardian and Observer journalist, Carole Cadwalladr, has issued several apologies recently to Arron Banks - in connection with his defamation case against her. The Guardian Media Group are not covering her legal costs in defending the case (the comments in question were made on twitter and crowdfunding websites):

I do actually find the Guardian a very useful source of information and it's well laid out if nothing else. For those posters who were going to leave Brexit Britain and emigrate to New Zealand, two Guardian articles here:

On Monday [yesterday] the New Zealand government announced it would be narrowing pathways for those hoping to migrate and work in the country, particularly those it classed as “low-skill” and low-wage workers. It simultaneously announced new measures to attract rich investors.
