Yes, I forgot to add that it wasn't a great deal for the financial services either...

HannibalHayeski · 01/06/2021 21:34

Oh for fuck's sake...

wewereliars · 01/06/2021 21:45

And brexiters wonder why they are called stupid!

HannibalHayeski · 01/06/2021 21:52

There aren't enough foreheads in the world for the amount of slapping required here!

pointythings · 01/06/2021 22:03

I think my brain just exploded.

Peregrina · 01/06/2021 23:58

I could only read the first two lines. Oh dear! Well, Mr Wetherspoon was never the sharpest knife in the drawer, was he?

DrBlackbird · 02/06/2021 00:05

Nope. Sorry, we only take those immigrants via our carefully controlled points based system now.

The government says employers of migrant workers who do not meet the skills or pay requirements will have to invest in labour saving technologies like automation. Robot barmen?

What is especially striking about the proposed system is that there is no dedicated route for occupations that the government deems to be low-skilled. All applicants for a general work visa must:

  • have a job offer from an approved employer
  • for a middle-skilled job or higher
  • speak English at the required level (this level has not been specified but for Tier 2 work visas currently it is B1 or ‘intermediate’), and
  • be paid the higher of the specific salary threshold for their occupation – known as the ‘going rate’ – or the general salary threshold for experienced workers, set at £25,600.
  • There is no general route for employers to recruit at or near the minimum wage. ....that's most Weatherspoon's jobs, right?

Awww. Bless poor Tim. Did Brexit not give him what he wanted?

I'm amazed you made two lines peregrina. I think I only got as far as 'more EU migration' before I fell about laughing. At least he's still got not stocking European wines. That will show them who's boss.

Interesting story ... slowly sliding into the public consciousness that Brexit was somehow something that doesn't need mentioning anymore. So, much like WW2 then. After all nobody bangs on about that 82 years after the event do they ?

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-57310154

The industry group said many overseas workers returned home last year and have not returned due to travel restrictions.
...

As an aside there is a fearsome amount of lolly sloshing around the country in various Kickstart/Restart schemes. If you can learn to speak SERCO, or an equivalent dialect, it's pretty much there for the taking.

So still a need for foreign languages then Grin

DGRossetti · 02/06/2021 08:05

@HannibalHayeski

I'm sure Yellowspanner will be on shortly to tell Tim he's a twat...

No, we will have Clavinova on here to tell us how Heinz intend to bring the manufacture of tomato ketchup to the UK. Creating all of 50 jobs, and possibly using GM tomatoes in the process.

yellowspanner · 02/06/2021 10:33

Hannibal, I have never yet called anybody "a twat" or any other name for that matter. I find your post offensive.

Peregrina · 02/06/2021 10:36

But since you are here yellowspanner, perhaps you would like to comment on Tim Martin's plea that EU staff be given a special exemption?

Shouldn't he be instead finding ways to encourage more British residents to take up the work? Paying decent wages might be a good starting point!

DGRossetti · 02/06/2021 10:41

That may be the only reason they are locating in the UK. Maybe they have some sneak previews of the incoming legislation - all under an NDA and possibly UK secret court jurisdiction.

Imagine being locked up under a law you aren't allowed to tell anyone about ? Must be quite a challenge ...

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 02/06/2021 10:43

I thought we might all agree that Tim Martin is a bit of a twat. But obviously not.

prettybird · 02/06/2021 10:47

"Twat" where I am in Scotland just means "idiot".

I think most of us here would agree with that assessment Grin

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 02/06/2021 10:47

I’ve just thought. Didn’t he tell all his staff to go and get jobs elsewhere rather than wait for the furlough money last year?

Peregrina · 02/06/2021 11:00

Twat to me just means idiot too.
I assume that Martin doesn't do irony.

prettybird · 02/06/2021 11:12

I believe learnt via MN that in certain parts of the country "twat" has a different meaning which is highly offensive Shock. A bit difficult if you move between areas or even on line and don't know that Confused
