Brexit

Westministenders: The Beginning of Negotiations

RedToothBrush · 31/12/2020 15:42

Transition has a few hours left.

Then negotiations start and trade stops.

Far from being over, there are huge numbers of issues that lay unresolved.

And businesses both now in the UK and EU will cease to trade with each other just because the red tape is such a pain.

So whilst people will celebrate and think things are 'done' that just shows how much people are paying attention.

It will be interesting to see people gradually realising what has been lost...

@HannibalHayes

Jesus wept - the season finale of CNN has got quite exciting...
👏👏👏
Eve · 06/01/2021 21:07

@mrslaughan am hearing of quite a few in similar position and seeing conversations on the red tape of driving a horsebox to the Eu.

Quite amusing - apparently the customs charges are all down to the greedy French! 😁

Peregrina · 06/01/2021 21:13

But won't they have to pay to take their horses to each EU country? So it will be the greedy Spaniards, tight fisted Germans......

This is what European unity was designed to put a stop to. Sigh.

@AllTheDogsIveLovedBefore - Any money I knew them!!

Ireland being Ireland, probably Smile. Although it was nearly 40 years ago.

Ooo...Sr Mechtilde, I bet any money your friend will know her. I spent almost a full summer down there in 1997 I think it was. maybe 1998? I had the time of my life getting to know them. I think that was the beginning of my Irish nationalism.

DGR
Biden has the triple.
Those who forgot their pledge of allegiance will be made to pay.
And rightly so.

RedToothBrush · 06/01/2021 21:38

Boris Johnson @BorisJohnson
Disgraceful scenes in U.S. Congress. The United States stands for democracy around the world and it is now vital that there should be a peaceful and orderly transfer of power.

Not a peep about Trump himself though

If Johnson says ANYTHING positive about Trump after this, no democratically elected leader will trust him

Peregrina · 06/01/2021 21:43

Sound of Johnson and cronies getting out the hammer and nails to start mending fences, and pretend that they were never broken.

Wonder what Farage is saying - he rushed off to see Trump as soon as he won.

TerryHearn · 06/01/2021 22:10

Tales of horse boxes denied entry and riding related equipment in short supply....Those continentals must be replacing that trade from somewhere equally lucrative as the UK market. Poland? Latvia? Romania? Bulgaria? Anyone have any idea? The businesses of the EU just waving goodbye to trade from the UK and replacing it with what? Strange way to run a business.

OchonAgusOchonO · 06/01/2021 22:16

What's strange about it? Market conditions change. It becomes unprofitable to supply a particular market so you stop supplying them. Seems like good business sense.

Peregrina · 06/01/2021 22:20

I am quite sure that other countries have horses TerryHearn. The Germans I recall used to lead the field in show jumping.

You are a sore winner. The EU is nothing to do with you now, but you are hoping that it will all fall apart as the Brexiters in the ERG did, and then got a surprise when the EU pulled together.

So time for you to clock off again. Turn your attention to the USA.

pointythings · 06/01/2021 22:26

Terry Hearn some of the best dressage horses in the world come from Denmark and the Netherlands. Who are in the EU. Some of the best show jumping horses come from the same places. The UK is not a big player in the breeding of international horses for sports any more. So yes, riders in the EU will be able to continue getting the horses they need.

As for equipment - Pikeur is again a Dutch top of the line provider of riding clothes, boots, etc. Some of the other top makes are also - er - not British.

So yes, the Brits may have to make do with second best, or pay more to get hold of the really good stuff. Brexit benefits, eh?

My Dsis runs a dressage yard. She isn't best pleased. Neither are her clients (though some of them did vote Leave, so no real sympathy there).

HappyWinter · 06/01/2021 22:27

Businesses selling goods have to turn a profit on those sales. If red tape/VAT collection issues/higher shipping costs wipe out their profit margin, they won't sell to the UK, especially if it could cost them more than they would have previously made on it. They have probably spent the last 4 years trying to find new markets. They still have the other EU countries, which will be a bigger market than the UK.

Scrap EU consumer and worker protections now Brexit is completed, leading Tory says

Safeguards over data, pay and conditions, GM foods, hedge funds and disposal of old vehicles should all be binned, Daniel Hannan says

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/eu-consumer-worker-protections-brexit-b1783331.html

All worrying, particularly scrapping this one:

the REACH Directive – to outlaw chemicals linked to health problems including cancer, thyroid disease, hormone disruption and slow development.

SabrinaThwaite · 06/01/2021 22:33

Brexit bonus of 20% VAT on a Dutch Warmblood now?

Ouch.

Peregrina · 06/01/2021 22:47

Scrap EU consumer and worker protections now Brexit is completed, leading Tory says

This is where the EU will pull out of the agreement and slap tariffs on us, so at least the extreme right will be able to say it's all the EU's fault.

It doesn't alter the fact that the wrong side won in the US elections. The tide is on the turn.

Eve · 06/01/2021 22:54

I had predicted workers rights to be gone by Easter .... I thought they might be decent enough to leave it a month or so ... but no ... 6 days! What they wanted all along Hmm

And for horses/ places at competitions in Europe and high end riding equipment - demand far outstrips supply for all of those , the suppliers will have no issues without the UK market.

borntobequiet · 06/01/2021 22:54

Almost the weirdest thing this very strange evening is returning to a Westminstender thread to find it’s turned into Mrs Doyle’s tea party while a pandemic rages and there’s an attempted Trumpian coup in Washington DC, with added burning crosses, gallows and other mobs scattered around various state Capitols.
And I’m Irish.

Sostenueto · 06/01/2021 22:58

Well Trump finally lost his mind. A sad black day for America the storming of Congress! And the USA once the biggest and some say ( but I don't) greatest democracy on earth.
Hope the impeach him for incitement to violence quickly, they need to get his hand away from that big red button pretty sharpish!!
