Westministenders: The Beginning of Negotiations

RedToothBrush · 31/12/2020 15:42

Transition has a few hours left.

Then negotiations start and trade stops.

Far from being over, there are huge numbers of issues that lay unresolved.

And businesses both now in the UK and EU will cease to trade with each other just because the red tape is such a pain.

So whilst people will celebrate and think things are 'done' that just shows how much people are paying attention.

It will be interesting to see people gradually realising what has been lost...

Weirdly, I posted this on the US thread yesterday.

I thought you had posted it on here...hence my mentioning it...

DrBlackbird · 06/01/2021 17:48

Just catching up on the thread.

Think you've made a typo error here DGR

...the more intelligent Tories

And sadly I agree that if we were to have another referendum even knowing all our previously unknown unknowns, it is still highly likely that Leave would win. There is a serious and alarming confluence around a lack of critical thinking and fear-based identity politics.

Emilyontmoor · 06/01/2021 18:27

I would bet there are 250 businessmen spitting blood at the moment. Imagine if you had spent the last four years trying to plan your business strategy for a moving target in terms of the environment you are going to be part of, in which you will face a whole range of barriers to your trading and then on top of that you face another massive economic challenge in which one of the few opportunities is how effective you have become at working from home and removing a big chunk of your operating costs in terms of rents. I don’t know a single business in the services sector that does not see this as one benefit in the sea of economic hits that is Brexit followed by Covid.

And then your “leader” (deliberate small l) comes out with this balderdash

“ Boris Johnson to 250 business leaders today:

  • ‘Whatever you think of euroscepticism, it’s over as a thing bedevilling British politics’
  • ‘This government does not want to be defined by portmanteau words Covid and Brexit’
  • 'The British state as a whole, or in parts, in places does have a problem and inability to act and make decisions as fast as I would like'
  • ‘I make a prediction to you all on zoom who say you are going to change your business models: I don’t believe it. Johnson’s law of remote communication is that the more people can get on zoom the more they will actually want to interact ...
  • physically. They will bring back life buzz activity and dynamism to our cities, that’s what will get UK exon whirring again’

And was the twat using the term Exon? Which is a key mechanism in the mutation of Covid RNA? (Warning : bringing verbal reasoning to a non verbal reasoning concept so probably got that wrong but it is a key mechanism in RNA mutation )

But in any case using something that has facilitated the deaths of getting on for 100k people as a metaphor for business strategy 😡

Perhaps his strategy has always been to facilitate the mutation of Covid. Letting it run rife through Kent may well have been a factor in the mutation of this latest variant, if not then open borders is the second most likely. And now the vaccine policy seems a possible route to greater mutation - www.statnews.com/2021/01/04/britain-takes-a-gamble-with-covid-19-vaccines-upping-the-stakes-for-the-rest-of-us/?utm_source=Nature+Briefing&utm_campaign=bc64e831c1-briefing-dy-20210104&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c9dfd39373-bc64e831c1-43385761

(Why the existing vaccine strategy might have enabled mutation and vaccine resistance in the face of such a widespread prevalence of Covid and the new policy of withholding / changing the second dose increases that risk)

Peregrina · 06/01/2021 18:36

Leave.EU moves to ...... wait for it:

Ireland so that it can keep its .EU suffix. Where is their loyalty?

Talk about hypocrisy. What is wrong with being Leave.UK?

Peregrina · 06/01/2021 18:49

- ‘Whatever you think of euroscepticism, it’s over as a thing bedevilling British politics’

Well, let's see shall we, if the ERG manage to destroy Johnson's premiership too.

TonMoulin · 06/01/2021 18:51

@Emilyontmoor, I have read posts From other virologist with the opposite opinion.

I don’t think things are that clear cut

Thread from a vaccinologist on increasing the time between injections

FWIW it seems the consensus is that there are some unknown doing that but the risk in delaying people having the first dose is much higher

The blog linked there is worth reading

@Peregrina

But most leave voters in GB didn't (and still don't) care about the GFA or NI.

England.

That’s my experience - I have a few ardent leavers in my wider circle - who when I asked about the impact on NI said they don’t care - yet they shared memes about Corbyn supporting the IRA . Hmm I think it went over their heads when I pointed out they are on the same side of the fence!

( both in low paid manual cash in hand work - as my mother would say thick as pigshit)

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes · 06/01/2021 19:18

@SabrinaThwaite I have a recipe for making mozzarella ... you’d need milk, rennet, citric acid and non-iodised salt.

Is that using normal milk, and is the recipe online? Any chance you could post a link please? I’ve never tried making cheese but I’ll try anything once. My SEN youngest only eats Mozzarella at the moment - kids are often awkward with cheese and no guarantee he’ll like home-made but you never know and needs must.

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes · 06/01/2021 19:27

Never mind, google found it Smile. It’s on wikihow if anyone else is interested.

Interesting developments in DC. I'm off to the Trump thread to see what's what.

Oh in response to earlier musings on NI Unionists - they're terrified of being eaten up by us Papists. I'm not even being flippant, it's a very real fear.

DC is truly insane
BUT
THe counting goes on in Georgia
and McConnell gets to reap what he and Gingrich sowed.
No sympathy from me.

52andblue · 06/01/2021 19:48

Watching Sky news re Washington open mouthed.
Pence has 'been taken to a secure location'.

AllTheDogsIveLovedBefore · 06/01/2021 19:49

Who will the loyalists be fighting against though? I'm so sick of this...let's just spell it out. The British Government wants rid of the North of Ireland. We have unity at last...the loyalists declare war ffs. 😂😂

Who are they going to be fighting against? HMG and the Crown! REALLY? Some loyalists if so! PSNI and Gardai are united and would quash them in days. If they come after innocent Catholics, Britain, EU and the USA would be against them.

I honestly think people are looking for excuses at this point.

AllTheDogsIveLovedBefore · 06/01/2021 19:58

What unionists are afraid of is that they will be treated in the same way that they treated Irish citizens in the North. But they really have nothing to fear. They are worried the worm will turn. They don't seem to understand the discriminated group just wants our rights.

I always think the privileged group - like men for example - does better when they concede ground. My husband is unionist but he will vote yes for a united Ireland.

HannibalHayes · 06/01/2021 20:01

Jesus wept - the season finale of CNN has got quite exciting...

@AllTheDogsIveLovedBefore - Who are they going to be fighting against? HMG and the Crown! REALLY? Some loyalists if so! PSNI and Gardai are united and would quash them in days.

The British never managed to defeat the IRA, either during the war of independence or the troubles. The gardaí and PSNI are no more likely to defeat loyalist terrorists.

If they come after innocent Catholics, Britain, EU and the USA would be against them.

The EU and the US might have some interest in resolving it but given the Brits not only turned a blind eye to loyalists murders but also actively aided and participated in some of them, I wouldn't hold my breath there.

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes · 06/01/2021 20:08

Jesus wept, Johnson and fucking Tories will you now fucking LISTEN about how the forces of CIVILISATION can be easily destroyed if their own leaders turn on them??

ListeningQuietly · 06/01/2021 20:14

In a Democracy the loser accepts when they have lost the vote.
They may campaign towards the next election
but they do not deny the result.

The USA is not currently a Democracy.

AllTheDogsIveLovedBefore · 06/01/2021 20:18

There are 12,500 members of loyalist paramilitaries. Despite the ceasefire. Not that much though.

The reason HMG never defeated them is because of collusion. How can you defeat something you are working alongside? (Take note all 'male feminists').

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes · 06/01/2021 20:20

And no, Rees-Mogg you disgusting slave-driving slime ball, the answer is not to paper over a few cracks with a degenerative religion denying the evolutionary raison d’etre of humanity, knowledge, it’s to not let the cracks - and cranks - spread in the first place. It’s freedom of information and transparency of ethics.

AllTheDogsIveLovedBefore · 06/01/2021 20:20

Yes HMG never defeated the IRA but how could they? Have you any idea how Catholics and young Catholic men especially were treated here? My first boyfriend was beaten up by British soldiers every other weekend.

mrslaughan · 06/01/2021 20:23

@eve - I think you have posted about showjumping?
I heard of two big yards yesterday that are seriously looking to relocate to Europe.
1 is an international SJ (has been on teams as opposed to goes abroad to SJ😂) the cost of going backwards and forward too much and if he sells a horse looks like he has to add VAT
2nd is someone who spends a lot of time SJ in Europe - brings on youngsters and sells them for big money - VAT will make his business unviable

Not sure if they voted Brexit - but they were not very focused on how it could effect their business

AllTheDogsIveLovedBefore · 06/01/2021 20:23

When you keep seeing that...your friends black and blue..some of them even dead at the hands of the British State, only the likes of John Hume could have made it work. A peacemaker to end all peacemakers. I don't think we will see his like again.
