Westministenders: The Beginning of Negotiations

RedToothBrush · 31/12/2020 15:42

Transition has a few hours left.

Then negotiations start and trade stops.

Far from being over, there are huge numbers of issues that lay unresolved.

And businesses both now in the UK and EU will cease to trade with each other just because the red tape is such a pain.

So whilst people will celebrate and think things are 'done' that just shows how much people are paying attention.

It will be interesting to see people gradually realising what has been lost...

Oh dear, those who voted Tory in December 2019 are really a little naive. They voted for a party led by a liar and a cheat, who had illegally prorogued Parliament, and then removed the whip from MPs who disagreed with him. Then they wonder why he's sold them out.

I was brought up on the Latin Mass (and know and can sing the Salve Regina off by heart). Rees Mogg is the very worst kind of Catholic, hidebound by (outdated) dogma and without an iota of Christian charity to trouble his warped conscience.

I was up all night following CNN, and then finally had to sleep.

It's a rollercoaster.

Thanks LQ - that looks like a great blog. What a day this is going to be in and for the US (including the shenanigans in DC).

Just reading some comments

which is the story doing the rounds at the moment.

Is it just me, or is there the tiniest glimmer of people trying to claim "We had no idea ... if only we'd known" ?

Meanwhile, fans of other cultures can put this in their dictionary:

This business owner and the one's who shouted PROJECT FEAR when warned about the risks/reality of Brexit reminds me of the Thai proverb: "They won't cry unless they see the coffin".

Northern Ireland has been well and truly sold down the river. Angry

Peregrina · 06/01/2021 16:27

I thought NI was supposed to be seeing the best of both worlds. I can't remember who said that - if it was Gove, well, no more need to be said.

It really is a serious question as to what Unionists think they are keeping a Union with ? I struggle to understand how a "Union" which has repeatedly shat on them for decades can possibly be worth saving or getting misty eyed about.

I am aware as a Remainer that matters of identity are important. But my affection for the EU is because it has delivered good things. Not turd after turd after turd as the Union has to Northern Ireland (and Scotland, and Wales).

O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins," when the band begins to play

OchonAgusOchonO · 06/01/2021 16:45

There is a real fear amongst certain unionists that a united ireland will eradicate their culture. Their whole identity is unionist and they have no affinity with Irish culture.

An interesting quote from this report sums it up:

many unionists would see the breaking from the UK as “a historic complete and irreversible failure of their core politics and identity” and he goes on “any talk or discussion on a United Ireland by unionism is seen by many as tantamount to negotiating surrender”

Peregrina · 06/01/2021 16:58

Not turd after turd after turd as the Union has to Northern Ireland (and Scotland, and Wales).

The same goes for the much of the north of England, but many decided 13 months ago that the Tories were the better bet.

Kendodd · 06/01/2021 16:59

I'm sorry but Leave voters (and even campaigners) moaning because they got what they voted for, like stupid eel bloke, or Brixham fishermen are fucking thick, there's no other description for them. They were told, and told and told.

Peregrina · 06/01/2021 17:04

What has Farage said? He must be jubilant.

Kendodd · 06/01/2021 17:04

And I would bet money, if there was another referendum right now, with a return to membership exactly as before, they would lap up every lie and believe every word Johnson, Farage, Rees-Mogg etc said, and vote Leave again.

Kendodd · 06/01/2021 17:06

What has Farage said? He must be jubilant.
Anyone want to bet he puts his efforts into 'independence' for England next? Hell be stirring up hatred against the other three nations 'holding us back'.
