Brexit

What have we gained by Brexit/leaving the EU?

Elephant4 · 29/12/2020 18:39

In simple terms.

I've read so much about what we've lost.

Please no sarcastic comments. I just want to know what we've gained - probably best if those who think Brexit is a positive thing post.

Given how this virus seems to mutate, the glee in which leavers like to point out the glaring failure of european nations to get vaccines rolled out is stupid.
Remainers keep on and on asking for just one tiny benefit. Well there you have it, nimble governance (with the procurement and approvals by the way more than with the rollout) in action, right there, right as we leave and when it's most needed. And your best defence now is to accuse us of gloating?

Toptotoeunicolour · 13/01/2021 18:48

However, back in 2016 a pandemic wasn't on the cards, so poor vaccination rollouts wasn't a reason to leave.
It wasn't, but nimble governance certainly was.
I have a very dear 87 year old MIL in Germany who hasn't left the house in months so I would be the very first to wish the rollout well.

It’s so wearing to keep hearing people constantly putting down the UK and every country can do a better job on anything and everything, reminds me of when people thought we could never pull off a successful Olympics because we don’t have the public services, the money, its doomed to fail, blah blah blah.

So I am going to have my Olympic moment and wallow in the success that is the UK’s vaccine roll out and stick two virtual fingers up to anyone who said it couldn’t be done or wants to put a negative ‘but, but, but’ in their posts.

There is talk of a third strain in Brazil so the more people we can vaccinate as quickly as possible the better.

The EU are can run things in whatever way they like but no one can now say ‘well, other European countries will do it better and more efficiently’ because to date they haven’t.

‘Big up’ to us🥳

HeyHeyImABeLeaver · 13/01/2021 18:57

Oooh Olympics was of course on Boris’ watch too Grin

Peregrina · 13/01/2021 19:16

The Olympics were won for Britain by the Labour Government.

FuriousWithTheNHS · 13/01/2021 19:17

Abso-fucking-lutely HeyHey

The more I think about that accusation of gloating the more pissed off I am. I said upthread that some people would rather see the UK go down the toilet and drag the lot of us all with it than ever have to admit that Brexit might be working, let alone working well.

Responses like that just prove my point.

HeyHeyImABeLeaver · 13/01/2021 19:20

Boris was London Mayor for the London Olympics so his watch.

Peregrina · 13/01/2021 19:22

Doesn't matter - if the Labour Government hadn't made the successful bid, they would have gone elsewhere.

HeyHeyImABeLeaver · 13/01/2021 19:25

Seriously Peregrina!! I feel like I’m in a completely parallel universe when I read some of these posts.

To be fair to Johnson, he is a salesman, can be very entertaining and funny... so yes he certainly helped make the Olympics a success.

Whether being an entertaining clown is good for a PM let alone one in a pandemic is another matter.

Kendodd · 13/01/2021 19:30

BJ was a brilliant front man for the Olympics, just like he was great on Have I Got News For You. He's a personality politician, that doesn't make him good at running the country.

Peregrina · 13/01/2021 19:30

Nothing unserious about reporting a fact. The organisation I was working for at the time helped to make a contribution to the bid, and I attended a presentation they gave. I left them in 2008, so a lot of the spade work had already been done.

Bollox!
Vaccine rollout & procurement isn't a brexit dividend... what we did was open to any EU nation, indeed we were in the EU (effectively) when all the key decisions were made.

Brexit isn't working, its fucked so many people, even my bestie, a firm brexitier tells me there appears to be no positives, just a string of negatives.
V happy with vaccine rollout (as am i) but doesn't put it down to Brexit.

Clavinova · 13/01/2021 19:39

Sebastian Coe led the Olympic bid didn't he? Sebastian Coe the Conservative peer. Grin

Peregrina · 13/01/2021 19:41

What does that tell us, other than a Labour Government knew to select the right sort of person for the job - a world class athlete. Shock horror, what if they had chosen a crony of Blair's who came last in the egg and spoon race as an infant.

Like Kate Bingham for the Vaccine Taskforce.

No Seb Coe, the gold medal olympian.... he has never quite shaken of the drugs accusation though has he?

amp.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/14/coronavirus-vaccine-delays-brexit-ema-expensive

To be fair we were all told this in March which has turned out to be completely untrue so you can’t blame people for wondering what other rubbish papers like the guardian spout. They are so chicken licken sometimes, I can’t read them anymore.
You can’t argue Brexit would impede our vaccine roll out in March and then when it actually doesn’t claim it is all nothing to do with brexit anyway. Either it is or it isn’t.
I remember James OBrien arch remainer having a bad tempered and ill informed discussion about it on his radio show. He was quite sure Brexit would mean we’d be at the back of the queue for vaccines Confused

Peregrina · 13/01/2021 19:53

Good job then that our olympians did better than this clown.

They believe in training and preparing for their events.

sashagabadon · 13/01/2021 19:56

I think we should credit Ken Livingston and tessa Howell actually with winning the Olympic bid which was in July 2007, the day before the London bombings, I remember it well. But Boris became mayor in 2008 and kept Tessa out but he should also be credited as he does motivate people and I think brought out the best in his team. Plus I think he was very involved with the team for the brilliant Olympic torch which was a triump. Something to do with Joanna lumley if my memory serves me Grin
I also enjoyed his zip wire stunt

sashagabadon · 13/01/2021 19:57

Sorry should say kept tessa on not out. She was apparently brilliant

sashagabadon · 13/01/2021 19:57

Tessa jowell

Keep going with the negativity, there’s a way to go yet coz this light of mine is gonna shine (and I think that’s also a song?) Smile
