Brexit

What have we gained by Brexit/leaving the EU?

In simple terms.

I've read so much about what we've lost.

Please no sarcastic comments. I just want to know what we've gained - probably best if those who think Brexit is a positive thing post.

Honestly, don't believe every little "feel better because" piece of news that is fed to the British public.

I have learnt a long time ago that news is diluted, bias and sometimes evern censord. (Yes, even in a democracy like the UK ...)[/quote]
see the German media take www.spiegel.de/international/europe/the-planning-disaster-germany-and-europe-could-fall-short-on-vaccine-supplies-a-3db4702d-ae23-4e85-85b7-20145a898abd

wiseup - not about approval, it is about vaccine numbers

And any EU country could have organised its own procurement. What’s your point?

@Whythesadface My husband is a fisherman and is furious how his fellow fisherman have been treated by our Government. The fishing won't recover all the time it's a free for all the thousands of foreign vessels draining our seas especially the factory ships. Our fisherman have gained nothing and our industry is on its knees. Boris is a traitor to the Fisherman and is allowing the industry to die a slow painful death. Then he will import fish from Norway who kill whales by the thousands!! Shameful!!

OverTheRainbowLiesOz · 29/12/2020 21:05

I can't see any gain so far. Just big losses.

I hope it turns around.

Snowdrop30 · 29/12/2020 21:10

Notoriety. But not in a good way.

Toptotoeunicolour · 29/12/2020 21:10

My 87 year old German MIL was told today she will receive her vaccine in May. Germany only accelerated roll out after there was a huge backlash there to the delays. Yes they could have individually opted for their own regulators to approve but there was political pressure to release at the same time across the whole EU after the PPE scandal there.

DoubleTweenQueen · 29/12/2020 21:11

@Walkintal - our immunisation program has nothing to do with us leaving the EU, and we are only a few weeks ahead so numbers at this point being a bit higher makes no significant difference. The only effect of us leaving the EU is that our Gvmnt decided not to join the EU procurement scheme - well, wouldn't have been seemly, would it - and as a result we have paid about 40% more per dose

Totally agree, but would also add that this is even worse in Germany than in UK.

we got significantly more doses than through the EU procurement programme.
Legally other EU countries could have done, but politically they could not, hence they haven't.
However, given you appear convinced the EU is so much better than anything the UK could do, you will refuse to accept this.

JingleCatJingle · 29/12/2020 21:45

A united Ireland and independant Scotland?

DoubleTweenQueen · 29/12/2020 21:48

@Walkintal You're presuming too much. Try again.

PurplePansy05 · 29/12/2020 21:57

Still waiting for a positive, OP.

Hmm

We gained several million Remoaners who seem to have Stockholm syndrome over the EU. We haven’t even moved out of the transition period yet and they are demanding to see a list of Brexit effects. They’ll have to wait. No one cares what they think. They aren’t driving the car anymore. They are strapped into the child seat in the back. Better put their dummy back in. Grin

Elephant4 · 29/12/2020 22:02

Well it doesn’t sound any better than I thought when first asking the question.

A lot of it goes over my head. Can’t understand how the vaccine stuff can be to do with Brexit as the deadline has not yet been reached ...

Although I can see how it all cost much more as we could not be seen to join an EU program.

The business about changing rules as we go along sounds dodgy. That’s where we’ll be lowering standards and worker’s rights isn’t it?

We are expected to run out of Pfizer vaccine shortly with no more until March.
We initially ordered just a few million, then ordered more to make the totally 40m, enough for 20m.

But sure if that article you linked to is correct, the EU have messed up even more.

I hope AZ can supply all of europe, indeed the RoW.

Peregrina · 29/12/2020 22:15

When we see what we have lost e.g.

from 1 January, the following animal products cannot be exported into the EU:
Chilled minced red meat
Chilled meat preparations (for example, raw sausages)
Minced meat (poultry)
Poultry and ratite or game bird mechanically-separated meat
Raw milk from cows infected with Bovine Tuberculosis (TB)
Ungraded eggs

I would like to see a list in the same form saying from 1st January we have gained......

and not just a pie in the sky list of we might do this, we might do that.

Of the list above banning milk from cows infected with TB is probably a good thing though.

Peregrina · 29/12/2020 22:17

However, one farmer plans to sell frozen sausages to the EU and try to market them as a premium product. Apparently frozen products can be seen as premium in the rest of the world but downmarket in the UK.

You can’t tell us what you voted for can you? 😂

Peregrina · 29/12/2020 22:23

Well, let's hope that none of these 'Remoaners' teach in schools, work in Doctors surgeries, hospitals, or shops, and then decide that they will withdraw their labour, since no one cares who they are or what they think.

Leave the field clear for the BeLeavers.

nimbuscloud · 29/12/2020 22:27

I’ve just googled ‘cost of Brexit’.
It seems to be coming in at an eye watering £200 billion 😱

nimbuscloud · 29/12/2020 22:28

Which is more than the UK paid in during its 47 years of membership of the EU.

Goodbye2020Hello2021 · 29/12/2020 22:32

nimbus
We’re an embarrassment.

Elephant4 · 29/12/2020 22:45

Why did our government spend £200 billion on Brexit - more than during it's 47 years of membership of the EU ...

Gosh that is so sad.

Why did our government press on with it when they must have known there was nothing to be gained. I don't believe they ever thought it could be a good thing for the UK. Do you/anyone?

Will the UK ever recover from this?

That is the cost of lost economic growth.
