Westministenders: Its the waiting that kills you

Just waiting.

Talks between Frost and Barnier still unresolved issues. There are rumours but 'all without evidence' (the new in phrase on BBC news tonight) that the UK is waivering.

Less that two months to go.

And there is the small matter of what happens in the US than might influence events.

And yes, the bad dream of Trump is very nearly over
the fat lady is in the wings loosening her corset Grin

and the insanity of the Brexiters relying on Trump will soon be shown up as a lie

I'm almost tempted to email it to Bigchoc as the FB friend who highlighted it to me is an old pal of hers !

Finally got to trawl through that - and more illuminatingly the comments. TL;DR is Brexiteers are having their arses handed to them on a plate. And now their football chant of "We won, get over it" makes no sense, there really is nothing to their utterances.

I look forward to their cheerleading whatever deal Boris cobbles together next week. Or will they still be blaming Corbyn and the alignment of Saturn square Mercury ?

Blimey last week Trump put in a block to undermine the FDA from getting vaccine trials verified!! Unbelievable! Just announced by Pelosi and the rule was put in on November 4th!

I thought Trump wanted to speed up the vaccine, not slow it down?

6 Oct -
"The White House has blocked proposed guidelines by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which would have likely prevented an approved Covid-19 vaccine by the US election on 3 November."

"Last month, the Washington Post reported that the FDA was going to announce tougher standards for the approval of a coronavirus vaccine."

"The FDA planned on asking any manufacturers seeking an emergency approval for a Covid-19 vaccine to go through a more rigorous process than is normally the case."

"The agency suggested that manufacturers follow participants involved in late-stage trials for two months after they had been administered their second vaccine shot, in order to collect enough data on participants to convince the public the dose is safe."

"However, a senior official in the Trump administration confirmed to Reuters on Monday that the White House believed that there was “no clinical or medical reason” for the proposed additional requirement, just a day after the US president said vaccines are “coming momentarily.”

"The official added that the White House was focused on creating a safe vaccine and wanted to make sure “additional loopholes” were not added that would slow down the process."

"The decision follows comments made by Donald Trump last month, where he claimed that any regulatory changes that could affect the authorisation of a vaccine would be “a political move more than anything else.”

Doesn't really matter what the last president did. We are now all much more interested in what the next one will do.

I am watching, but I've had DH's data to look at since yesterday morning too. He ran the numbers so we've been pretty sure how it would drop for a while because the trends were so consistent.

BCF would probably appreciate the link.

Quite - an FTA with the UK. Grin

DGRossetti · 06/11/2020 16:50

I think the TL;DR is that the vote will be decided without needing to draw on late or mail in ballots in PA - which means Trump will have no grounds for any legal action. And as it's already been stated, if Biden takes PA then it makes zero difference to the other states outcomes - rigged or not.

I have no interest in trading with the US - we simply don't do enough of it.

I am much more interested in trading with our biggest single market and geographically nearest market. Which - by handy coincidence - are one and the same.

As a couple of friends in the US have already said of a Biden win - he's gonna have a lot more to worry about than the UK. After all, it's not like Great Britain didn't have an Empire is it ? Surely they can look after themselves ? (Not my words)

Clavinova · 06/11/2020 16:55

"Negotiations on the UK’s Future Trading Relationship with the US: Update."

"The fifth UK-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiating round took place from 19 to 30 October 2020."

"This was the most intensive round of negotiations held so far, with 38 sessions covering 19 different chapter areas."

"Almost all chapter areas are now in the advanced stages of talks. A significant proportion of legal text has been agreed across multiple chapters."

"The round included focused discussions on market access for goods, including negotiations around product specific rules of origin, which determines whether or not a product can benefit from preferential tariffs under the FTA."

"We also held detailed textual discussions on a Digital chapter and agreed much of the legal framework for a future agreement."

"Following the significant progress made in talks to date, both sides are confident that we are on track for a comprehensive agreement which would provide a significant and mutual benefit to our economies. We believe we are in a good position to move forward after the U.S. election."

If Biden does win, it will be very interesting seeing the rabid right wing start rewriting their personal histories, in the way that Nazi sympathisers did when after the last war. Only problem now is with social media, so many things have been captured on record.

Peregrina · 06/11/2020 16:57

Old Noos Clavinova.

The USA will NOT focus on the UK after the election.
It really is that simple.

The UK should focus on getting fresh food for its populace
which does NOT come from the USA

Flowers *@squid4* It has felt like a relentless dystopia, recently. Biden winning and a vaccine release would almost redeem 2020.
If it’s vaccine news you’re after, I was told on good authority that there will be data released from one study (not Oxford) within the next 2 weeks, and a likely roll-out to care home staff and the elderly before Christmas. I hope it’s correct!

Thanks for everything, squid4 Flowers

Meanwhile, it looks like we could do with some random distracting word salad that's scarcely tangential to the topic under discussion and so, in reference to leaders past their sell-by-date:

🐿 China’s First Emperor, Qin Shi Huangdi, was so desperate to avoid death that, ironically, he may have died of mercury poisoning from consuming various ‘elixirs of life’ whilst on a journey to locate more of the above. The Emperor’s death was covered up for the 2 months required to return to the capital, with carts of rotten fish ordered to travel alongside the Imperial carriage to hide the stench of the decomposing body. Therefore, Brexit is going wonderfully! 🐿

Clavinova · 06/11/2020 17:22

The USA will NOT focus on the UK after the election.

One year, two years, four years time...I doubt it will make that much difference to be honest.

DGRossetti · 06/11/2020 17:23

Thanks Elements

Peregrina · 06/11/2020 17:25

I think it will make a considerable difference. I don't however think that Biden is a great saviour; I think it's a bit sad that he was the best they could put forward.

He's hardly the messiah. But at least he's not a very naughty boy.

We need a US prepared to take it's place alongside the rest of the world, not opposite them all the time.

My very first thoughts are how will US-China relations fare ?
