Just waiting.

Talks between Frost and Barnier still unresolved issues. There are rumours but 'all without evidence' (the new in phrase on BBC news tonight) that the UK is waivering.

Less that two months to go.

And there is the small matter of what happens in the US than might influence events.

The UK should focus on getting fresh food for its populace
which does NOT come from the USA

"German discounter [Lidl] said its £1.3 billion investment plans in Great Britain for 2021 and 2022 will drive the opening of 100 additional stores, creating around 4000 jobs for the British economy."

"By the end of 2023, Lidl said it would aim to have 1000 stores in Great Britain."

I imagine that Lidl do actually plan to sell some food in their new stores.

ListeningQuietly · 06/11/2020 17:32

One year, two years, four years time...I doubt it will make that much difference to be honest.
Personally I'm not willing to wait four years for fresh food at sensible prices from the EU.

The UK Govt should be putting ALL of its efforts into sorting a GOOD arrangement with Barnier
and as I'm one of the few posters on here who likes razor clams
fisheries are NOT the issue

TheElementsOfMedical · 06/11/2020 17:34

Fortunately, virtual carts of rotten fish to intended to distract from the stench of the ToryBrexitannianNationalPlague government are available right now Grin

DGRossetti · 06/11/2020 17:37

Lidl is not the British government.

And bad show for having to cite a foreign shop. Why not find some British ones that aren't complaining about the current situation. You know - the British shops that will be everywhere now we are out of the EU. Unchained. Like ducks.

DGRossetti · 06/11/2020 17:42

Encouraging ...

Everything I'm hearing from real people Stateside is that
all of the armed forces, police, secret service, government employees
know that they pledge allegiance to the flag
the moment its called, their allegiance changes to the new flag holder
and Trump will find himself very isolated very fast
if he kicks back against the procedures

ListeningQuietly · 06/11/2020 17:51

And when the UK governments own legal reps
tell them to tone down the rhetoric .....

KenDodd · 06/11/2020 17:53

Jumping in to ask a question, hope nobody minds.

Assuming Trump loses, he's still president until 20/1/21, is that time to do a UK/US trade deal?

I worry we'll get a really shit American first trade deal before Trump leaves office.

Clavinova · 06/11/2020 17:55

I'm sure the UK Govt are putting a great deal of effort into getting a GOOD deal with the EU.

I doubt that Lidl plan to pass on much of the extra tariff costs to their customers - more likely to be absorbed by the supermarket and their suppliers. And if Lidl were worried about supply they wouldn't announce a £1.3 billion investment in the UK now.

I can easily believe that all of a sudden Donalds calls aren't being returned.

It's not quite the end of Robocop, but there are points of reference.

Who knows, maybe the best thing about Trump will be his going. As a very very snarky colleague once said of a very unpopular boss years ago:

That's one thing I like about Jeff
Oh, what's that ?
The back of his head ....

DGRossetti · 06/11/2020 17:58

No. It would have to go through Congress.

He will be the President until that date.
He can push through laws and executive orders
BUT
there is not a hope in hell of a Trade deal.

Trump is in la la land and looks no further than his own belly.
Biden will not be interested in the UK until the middle of next year.

KenDodd · 06/11/2020 17:59

Phew!

KenDodd · 06/11/2020 18:00

Thanks.

DGRossetti · 06/11/2020 18:04

Furthermore, Congress will set their own agenda anyway.

FlouncingBabooshka · 06/11/2020 18:44

I think I’ve broken DH with almost three solid days of CNN.

Might have to dust off the Seinfeld dvds tonight.

Pop the 538 website on in the background
and then binge watch Geoffrey Palmer highlights all weekend
that is my plan

pointythings · 06/11/2020 18:56

I've dug out my box set of Due South. Because Canadian in Chicago and also maybe Paul Gross, a bit.

DGRossetti · 06/11/2020 18:58

Now fancy that ?

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-54840747

Boris Johnson has said he believes there is "a deal to be done" on post-Brexit trade with the EU.

(contd)

Obviously the blithering buffoon hasn't got the smarts to take advantage of the disarray in the ERG ranks that a Biden POTUS must be causing and decided to act quickly before they can regroup.

So either this is a stopped clock moment, or someone has pulled some strings somewhere.

Obviously we can discount everything he says. Be curious to see the actual details of what he's going to sell.

TheMShip · 06/11/2020 19:00

Back to Brexit...

Jordan Freight:
We just had 1.5hr trial with the Kent Access Permit people to help determine if the notice is sufficient. Very friendly conversation. So, does it make sense? Yes. Is it workable? Not acording to us. KAP is a result of a failure of systems being ready.

The theoretical model makes sense. In practice, owing to time, volume and information required (think border ready) will prove challenging. We hope to see revisions before 01.01.21

Wait your exercise lasted an hour and a half or use of the permit itself to do whatever you need it for took an hour and a half?

The modelling on customs delays worked with units of minutes, not hours.

Essentially to see if the online system made sense. It did. But this does not mean it is workable.

Ah I see.

Did it handle edge cases satisfactorily?

Like if a trucker is already Dover-bound but the shipper rolls the export onto the next vessel sailing a week later? Does the KAP remain valid?

Have to get a new one

Oh man, that seems like a big problem as we rolled stuff all the time for bad paperwork. I would think this a problem if eg the yard to store the container is actually in Kent (though maybe there are alternate arrangements for entry not heading to a port terminal.

Italics are other Twitter people responding to the OP. LQ will be rolling her eyes at this, I'm sure you aren't surprised!

mrslaughan · 06/11/2020 19:05

LQ "Biden will not be interested in the UK until the middle of next year."

Except if the Tories decide to REALLY fuck over the ROI - then I think they will get a lot of his attention..... but not the sort they will want

Nope, sorry, nothing at all there surprises me one iota

Amusing fact

And NOI. Biden has family from Derry.

ListeningQuietly · 06/11/2020 19:21

I have to be careful here

I'm drinking gin while waiting to open my champagne
sorry BigChoc

Biden gives less than two shits about the UK
he barely gives a shit about the EU

the US has mahoosive issues that need to be dealt with FAST

the whole world has pissed itself laughing at the country bollocksing up democracy, accountability and governance

THOSE are his priorities

as he's only in for one term and the campaign for the next mid terms starts in less than a year
