Just waiting.

Talks between Frost and Barnier still unresolved issues. There are rumours but 'all without evidence' (the new in phrase on BBC news tonight) that the UK is waivering.

Less that two months to go.

And there is the small matter of what happens in the US than might influence events.

To be a fly on the wall in the Trump camp now.

It must be like Downfall.

Speaking of which...

@HoldMyLobster - yep, someone had to do it!

Watching both NBC and CBS - they cut away from the Orange Toddler to point out that he was lying - and didn't even bother going back to him until he finished and walked off, as he was just ranting. They weren't pulling their punches about how UNpresidential he was being.

CNN coverage is the same Prettybird. They showed his rant in full but are pulling no punches about the ‘blizzard of lies.’

Overall their coverage has been excellent. Interesting, intelligent and forensic.

Trump now leading in Georgia by 500 votes with 99% of the count in, according to associated press.
Most of the votes are in blue counties though some in heavier red.

There is also the military votes to come in which could change everything. We don't know how many. In 2016 i believe it was about 5000.

Its TIGHT.

And if it's like the Brexit referendum was, even one vote more for the Republicans/Leave, will give them carte blanche to pretend that the victory was overwhelming and that the losing side can be completely ignored.

It really is time for FPTP systems to be ditched.

Nick Gutteridge @nickgutteridge
1/ During private briefings this week Michel Barnier said the UK side has been pressing for the Brexit talks to be kicked up to a higher political level but he has pushed back, fearing No 10 wants to turn the last few days of negotiations into a 'mass bargaining session'.

2/ The EU's chief negotiator sees Britain's strategy as trying to orchestrate a 'big tug of war at the end' between Boris Johnson and Ursula von der Leyen/Merkel/Macron during which the three key topics fisheries, LPF and governance would be played off against each other.

3/ The thinking goes a leader level intervention worked for the Withdrawal Agreement, with the PM and Juncker/Varadkar, so why not do it again? Barnier said he's open to a few select topics being passed upward at the very end, but the UK wants to leave as many as 30 issues open.

4/ He is said to have expressed frustration and accused the UK of not understanding how the EU works. Sources reported him as saying: 'I keep telling them that's not going to happen. You can't have things going up to that level that haven't been gone over with a fine toothcomb.'

5/ In a generally gloomy assessment the EU's chief negotiator said the talks are currently 'not on a trajectory' to get a deal and there won't be one unless the UK changes its approach, especially on LPF and fishing where he said the EU has shown willingness to compromise.

6/ Mr Barnier also expressed wariness at the UK's repeated portrayal of the tariff and quota free deal on the table as 'low value' and just Canada-style. He said this is a communications tactic the EU needs to push back against, and it's actually an economically high value deal.

7/ He said the Brits hypocritically talk about a simple FTA when it suits them, like on LPF, but in other areas push for much greater access. EU diplomat: "This is not a flimsy trade agreement. This is serious stuff. If all you want is a Canada-style deal, only ask for that.'

8/ As for the Brits, they're relaxed about such noises coming out of Brussels which they say are always expected after Barnier does his internal briefings. UK officials are focussed on securing a breakthrough in next week's talks. Barnier and Frost reconvene in London on Sunday.

I keep telling them that's not going to happen. You can't have things going up to that level that haven't been gone over with a fine toothcomb.

Toothcomb is one of my favourite misspellings.

Biden now ahead in Georgia.

ListeningQuietly · 06/11/2020 09:37

Trump may plan to barricade himself into the White House
but Biden knows the rules much better
and knows how to play the "security clearance and information access" games.
Biden also has used the Biden my time line well to keep the police and military calm
eg how they secured INSIDE the building in Arizona rather than fighting OUTSDE ....

Delay does not suit Trump
it massively suits everybody else

GaspodeWonderCat · 06/11/2020 09:46

The forms toothcomb and fine toothcomb arose from a misreading of the compound noun fine-tooth comb, a comb with closely spaced teeth. However, in modern use all the forms are accepted in standard English. www.lexico.com/definition/toothcomb

RedToothBrush · 06/11/2020 10:13

From the Guardian Live feed:

It should be noted though that Georgia remains in ‘too close to call’ territory, and while the Associated Press and Fox News have called it for Biden, the Trump team still have hopes of turning that Arizona race around as more votes are counted.

AP and Fox are now saying they are confident Biden has won.

The FPTP certainly does have a lot of faults indeed.

The closeness of the US election is torture. Last night I read that one of the states' uncounted votes is the overseas/military. Will the military vote be republican though? And if it's called for Biden Trump will demand a recount. I keep worrying that Trump will narrowly squeak in to enough states to get him 270. Must keep the faith.

ListeningQuietly · 06/11/2020 10:17

Arizona is going Trump's way.
The others are not.

ListeningQuietly · 06/11/2020 10:22

rogue
overseas votes are the hardest to validate
so they do them last as there are rarely enough to make a difference to the outcome

If they can get an "outcome" from the quick and easy ballots
and then a final "result" in time for the EC voting, that is the way they do it

This year the easy ballots have not delivered n outcome

Sostenueto · 06/11/2020 10:29

Didn't look like Arizona going Trump's way an hour ago when I looked.Confused

It may not. Tuscon is a pretty blue town
but we'll have to wait and see Smile
