Westministenders: Its the waiting that kills you

Just waiting.

Talks between Frost and Barnier still unresolved issues. There are rumours but 'all without evidence' (the new in phrase on BBC news tonight) that the UK is waivering.

Less that two months to go.

And there is the small matter of what happens in the US than might influence events.

Mind you, John Major has also had a few choice words to say about Johnson's cavalier attitude to the GFA. Major's gone quiet recently, I've just realised. Did I miss something happening to him?

John Major: Brexit set to be 'more brutal than anyone expected'

Aylaaaaaaa · 09/11/2020 21:36

As a Brit who actually commemorates our Empire, I feel a twang of pride that someone from India has made it so far in the US

As an Indian...no. Just no.

No you don't feel pride ?

No I'm not allowed to feel pride ?

FlouncingBabooshka · 09/11/2020 21:42

Just reading that Mitch McConnell has thrown his support behind Trump. Still only a handful of Republican Senators who have acknowledged Biden’s win.

Aylaaaaaaa · 09/11/2020 21:48

No you don't feel pride?

As an Indian, yes.

Nowt to do with the British Empire.

Apileofballyhoo · 09/11/2020 22:07

I can only find an Indie article on it Flouncing - have you got a link?

Fox news have pulled away from a WH press briefing saying they couldn't show it as there was no evidence for what was being said.

ListeningQuietly · 09/11/2020 22:12

I tend to follow this site
fivethirtyeight.com/live-blog/2020-election-uncalled-races/
which is owned by ABC news as they stay quite well up to date

I'd be very surprised if McConnell came out for Trump

Apileofballyhoo · 09/11/2020 22:28

He said in the Senate today that Trump is 100% within his rights.

I read one of those Robert Harris Cicero historical novels a few years ago. It was frightening how fast events unfolded in a seemingly unstoppable way. Of course reading a historical novel you know events were not stopped and the republic fell and the empire began. Stirred up the plebs there too.

This news is about as bad as it gets. They have thrown their weight behind an attempted coup and this does not end well.

The US is now hurtling at break neck speed towards a potential civil war. Im not sure how many people realise this.

Sorry @Apileofballyhoo, have been offline. I read it on the NYT app and can't work out how to link from it (Luddite [

Putin did a really good job. Tremendous.

FlouncingBabooshka · 09/11/2020 23:13

Fat fingers - posted too soon. Will try to copy and past

Apileofballyhoo · 09/11/2020 23:17

Got it, flouncing, thank you. www.nytimes.com/live/2020/11/09/us/joe-biden-trump

Hopefully that link works.

FlouncingBabooshka · 09/11/2020 23:22

Thanks @Apileofballyhoo.

Re-reading I suppose endorsing his right to contest the election is a long way from actually supporting the idea of electoral fraud. Or am I being naively optimistic?

Aylaaaaaaa · 09/11/2020 23:26

MM hasn't exactly come out in support of Trump, merely said he has the right to contest the results.

I think that's quite different to supporting his baseless accusations of fraud.

Apileofballyhoo · 09/11/2020 23:28

I hope you're right Ayla.

The practicalities of running an import-export business after 01/01/2021.

Aylaaaaaaa · 09/11/2020 23:37

I don't, personally, believe that America is headed for civil war. I believe that, at most, the "case", such as it is, will go to the supreme court, where a Biden win will be upheld, regardless of the political leanings of the judges.

Sostenueto · 09/11/2020 23:38

Apparently 9 out of 10 lawsuits by Trump has already been thrown out of court regarding fraudulent election.

Sostenueto · 09/11/2020 23:38

Have not has

Apileofballyhoo · 10/11/2020 00:14

Could Mitch McConnell be thinking that he needs to go along with this so it can be put to bed?

Tanith · 10/11/2020 00:20

It could get interesting...

Apileofballyhoo · 10/11/2020 01:00

That was a really interesting read Tanith, thank you.

We just have to wait and see if Trump can come up with anything convincing enough to take to the SC, sos. In 2 or 3 different states.

mathanxiety · 10/11/2020 05:35

Robert Reich has outlined a scenario in which Trump persuades GOP dominated state legislatures to refuse to certify key state results and to send pro-Trump electors to the EC.
