Just waiting.

Talks between Frost and Barnier still unresolved issues. There are rumours but 'all without evidence' (the new in phrase on BBC news tonight) that the UK is waivering.

Less that two months to go.

And there is the small matter of what happens in the US than might influence events.

More gloomy prognostications. America is doomed.

Lonelycrab · 10/11/2020 06:47

Can’t believe I’m waking up to this.

Red I sincerely hope you’re wrong. As ever though I suspect you’re not. Fuck.

FlouncingBabooshka · 10/11/2020 07:04

That’s a very interesting article, thank you for sharing Tanith.

There was a conversation on CNN yesterday about how Trump has privately conceded he has lost. His stance isn’t about hanging on to the presidency at all but is all about strengthening the narrative of the stolen election with his supporters and positioning himself for 2024. According to a senior advisor, this is what Trump now sees as his ‘path to losing’. The bit about having privately conceded the loss surprised me.

It’s a frightening enough scenario in such a divided country but I’m sure he’s also more than capable of changing his game-plan if he sees or imagines the merest hint of a viable option to stay.

I rather naively assumed senior GOP figures would be only to happy to see Trump gone. A little like the PLP and Corbyn. Is it all about showing his supporters they are defending his right to contest the results? Or have they genuinely thrown in their lot with him in some sort of Faustian pact to retain power?

SabrinaThwaite · 10/11/2020 07:34

Still one bit of good news:

@Otto_English

So Claire Fox robustly defended the government's Internal Market Bill in the Lords last night only to then accidentally vote against it - helping defeat the very bill she'd spoken so passionately in defence of. November just keeps getting better.

OchonAgusOchonO · 10/11/2020 08:00

@SabrinaThwaite - that's hilarious.

Peregrina · 10/11/2020 08:10

Somehow, I think we don't have to let ourselves give in to despair about Trump and what he might get up to. It's often two steps forward and one back.

Aylaaaaaaa · 10/11/2020 08:14

I don't think the Barr thing is much more than posturing to be honest.

Peregrina · 10/11/2020 08:15

Having said the above, I notice from other threads that the bots are out to denigrate Biden - he could be worse than Trump. They do seem to be forgetting that he has already done two terms as Vice President, so has already had a lot of public exposure.

notimagain · 10/11/2020 08:17

I suspect they would be quite happy to see him go as long as the GOP could retain the support of Trump's hard core supporters..

Aylaaaaaaa · 10/11/2020 08:26

Yup, that's the dilemma in which they find themselves here and that's also why most of them are not coming out in accepting Biden has won.

Peregrina · 10/11/2020 08:53

I am very pleased to see that the couple responsible for this new vaccine, Ozlem Tureci and Ugur Sahin, are children of Turkish Gastarbeiter. Would they have been able to develop this vaccine if their parents had stayed in Turkey, I wonder.

Maybe we do need immigrants after all.

TheABC · 10/11/2020 09:37

If Trump is focused on his fraud fantasy/2024 re-election, he will have less bandwidth for the inevitable tantrum coming America's way.

I also suspect that's why GOP has remained quiet; there's a distinct possibility that Trump could run and win again in four years time. Why poke the bear by conceding to Biden? It's the right thing to do, but gives them no political incentive.

Over here in the UK, I am waiting for something outrageous to happen, so the Government can quietly drop the more problematic bits of Brexit. The majority of their supporters simply won't notice.

Indeed.

Also, bringing us back to the more practical aspects of Brexit, how's it going to work importing this vaccine from the EU in the new year, through the epic queues of the Farage Garage, when it needs to be stored and transported below -75°C?

I figure it’ll get flown in.

(Thought I’d get that in to beat the 🐿🐿🐿🐿)

Sostenueto · 10/11/2020 10:08

Apparently they won't sign off transition funds to Biden. This is getting dangerous for America. How many has Trump paid off?

KenDodd · 10/11/2020 10:15

I wonder if any flat earthers support Biden? My guess would be not.

Maybe she should organise a press conference at a Landscaping Centre ?
Peregrina · 10/11/2020 10:18

I could envisage Invanka Trump having a go at the Presidency - now that there is a female VP elect, who might become President if something happens to Biden.

TonMoulin · 10/11/2020 10:25

An interesting quote form John Major
twitter.com/andrew_adonis/status/1325896578587095042?s=21

Yes there are many people who grumble about this comment in the grounds that ‘we won, you lost. Get over it’ and comments about how remoaners are just like trump they can’t accept defeat.

HOWEVER, I think this is important to flag. The lies have to be highlighted, not the least because they said a lot about those who campaigned for brexit, who sold a version of brexit and then gave the country something completely different. Whether you are a REmainer or a brexiter, knowing you are not going to get what you voted for or what you were pro used is essential. Like it is for ANY promises made during a campaign (see the parties manifesto for example)

They can't do that until either Trump concedes or the ECs assign him the votes officially.
ListeningQuietly · 10/11/2020 10:39

It really does have to be remembered that Bush / Gore went on for four weeks
and that US elections are never counted fully until early December
which is crap compared with other countries but hey ho

For Trump's claims about dodgy ballot papers to stick he has to prove that the whole ballot paper was dodgy
which affects senators, congress members, governors, state legislature members and multiple ballot initiatives
none of which are being queried
(as US ballot forms are things of wonder)

The GOP are letting him run with the its a steal theories
and then letting courts kicks them out for lack of evidence.

Trump gets his energy by moving fast.
Slowing things down plays to his weakness
and Biden's strength

and indecision across the pond puts Johnson in an even weaker position.

SabrinaThwaite · 10/11/2020 10:45

The head of the GSA has discretion as to ascertaining when the transition funds are released, and because of all of the sound and fury of Trump’s legal challenges, is possibly being conservative about releasing the funds too early. It is supposed to be an apolitical decision.

On the other hand, she might just be another Trump enabling Republican.

DGRossetti · 10/11/2020 10:55

I think it is absolutely disgusting how John Major is bullying and intimidating Brexiteers. How dare he !

ListeningQuietly · 10/11/2020 11:05

FWIW, its worth making VERY clear that if the presidential election is fraudulent, EVERY election last week has to be declared fraudulent
because they are all on the same piece of paper

In the UK if there is a GE and a local council election and a PCC on the same day
we get three pieces of paper and post them each into the correct ballot box

In the US, electors have to fight their way past this Sad

Peregrina · 10/11/2020 11:42

Ours are usually on different coloured paper, so that we know at a glance which is which, and if they are accidentally put into the wrong box, they can easily be sorted out at the count.
