It's a stupid question maybe, but do Johnson and cronies realise that the Withdrawal Agreement is an International Treaty?

TokyoSushi · 06/09/2020 23:01

Not necessarily @Peregrina I'm not sure that they particularly understand any of it!

SwedishEdith · 06/09/2020 23:02

I'm not sure Johnson understands anything in detail doesn't care either as he'll be gone in a few months but I'd like to think Frost knows.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 06/09/2020 23:06

But surely there's enough people in the lord's to stop this? Long ago appointed by some sane prime minister, they won't agree to this will they?

Peregrina · 06/09/2020 23:16

Sadly, I think we need a rebellion from the Tories in the HoC. You would hope that some of them could dig deep and find that they do have a conscience somewhere, and that they have such a thing called a spine.

SabrinaThwaite · 06/09/2020 23:19

And ... Johnson made every new Tory MP pledge to back his “oven ready“ deal.

And they will now be required to vote to overturn it?

Hmmm ...

TokyoSushi · 06/09/2020 23:19

Well it's certainly a mega dead cat to distract from the rapidly rising COVID infection levels...

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 06/09/2020 23:34

BJ doesn't care that it's an International Treaty. If he wants to change it, he'll find a way.

Or - Johnson knows he needs a deal, he’s getting a bit desperate (hence tonight’s threats) and will likely get one which is more favourable to the EU but he’ll make out it’s amazeballs for the UK.

Add in the risk that if Biden gets in Johnson can’t be seen to be fucking with the GFA.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/09/2020 23:50

@ICouldHaveCheckedFirst

BJ doesn't care that it's an International Treaty. If he wants to change it, he'll find a way.
... The Uk is not sufficiently powerful any more to break international treaties and get away with it (The USA, Russia, China can)

However, BJ's attempts could badly hurt the UK, with trade sanctions, proceedings at the Hague etc
Welcome to becoming a rogue state

Decades spent building up a national reputation for being law-abiding, all to be flushed down the toilet in BJ's petulant attempt to get out from under an international treaty that he and his chums didn't bother reading before ratifying.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/09/2020 23:52

Whoever wins the US Presidential election, Congress will not allow the UK to fuck up the NI Protocol / GFA

However, any FTA with the USA is uite some time away, even if BJ again doesn't bother to read before signing

Peregrina · 07/09/2020 00:25

I can't help but think that for anyone trying to negotiate with Johnson's Government, it must be the same sort of experience that moderate countries had trying to negotiate with Nazi Germany. They did not want to negotiate, so it didn't matter what Chamberlain or various others tried.

Should Barnier just walk away or let Johnson do the walking away? Either way the Mail and Express will be screaming that it's all the EU's fault.
